    Notes: In two 12-week grazing experiments using twelve and eighteen spring-calved cows in 1976 and 1977 respectively, the effects of feeding either a barley or a groundnut concentrate supplement were investigated. The mean yield of herbage DM on offer was 2330 and 2030 kg ha-1, with crude protein concentrations of 192 and 193 g per kg DM in 1976 and 1977 respectively. Grazed herbage was the sole feed in the control treatment. In the other two treatments the herbage was supplemented with 3 kg per cow per d of a concentrate containing either 82·2% barley or groundnut with mean crude protein concentrations of 109 and 409 g per kg DM respectively. Similar results were obtained in both experiments with average daily milk yields of 18·3, 19·8 and 19·9 kg per cow on the control, barley and groundnut treatments respectively. The supplements had no significant effects on either milk composition or liveweight change. It is concluded, that with an ample supply of herbage of high crude protein concentration, a supplement of groundnut had no advantages over one of barley.

    Notes: In a 16-week grazing experiment with six spring-calved Ayrshire cows, drinking water was available to the animals in three different ways, and the effect on milk prodnction was studied. The water was available from a water howl in the cowshed for 2.8 h/day in Treatment A, from a trough in the field for 21.2h/day in Treatment B, and from hoth sources for a total of 24 h/day in Treatment C. The cows on all treatments were grazed in individual plots of intensively-managed perennial ryegrass, stocked at the rate of 1 cow/0.22 ha (0.54 ac). The mean daily intakes of drinking water were 10.1, 15.3 and 15.5 kg (2.23, 3.37 and 3.42 gal)/cow, and the mean daily milk yields were 17.0, 17.2 and 16.8 kg (37.5, 37.9 and 37.0 lb)/cow in Treatments A, B and C, respectively; milk yields were not significantly different The herbage had an average DM content of 17.3%, and contained 19.6% crude protein and 66.5% digestible organic matter in the DM. The weight of water drunk was significantly and positively related to the DM percentage of the herbage, the air temperature and the daily hours of sunshine, and negatively related to daily rainfall. It is concluded that when dairy cows are grazing leafy herbage of high digestibility as their sole feed, the time during which drinking water is available may safely be restricted.

    Notes: A study of 16 silages made at the Hannah Research Institute and 22 silages made at the Grassland Research Institute showed highly significant positive relationships hetween the DM percentages of the material ensiled and the resultant silage. Using regression equations derived from this data, and from a record of the presence or absence of effluent, it was calculated that the average minimum DM content of herbage for ensiling which would produce no effluent was 22.9%. To ensure a margin of safety against production of effluent, a minimum DM content of 24.7% in the herbage was calculated from the confidence limits. To obtain this DM content, herhage will normally require wilting; effluent production should then be negligible.

    Notes: Fonr grass sUages made in May from the same herbage were compared io a 16-week feeding experiment with 12 Ayrshire cows. The silages were made from herhage wilted for either 1 or 2 days, and with or without 1/2 gal formic acid per ton of herhage. The silages treated with acid were, on average, 5°C cooler than the untreated silages, had lower pH values, higher lactic acid contents, slightly higher DM and crude protein contents, and higher contents of digestible organic matter in the DM. The silages were fed ad lib. with a supplement of harley and groundnut cake. The intakes of silage DM were higher with the acid-treated than with the nntreated silage. The mean daily milk yields on the silages made with and without the acid additive were 35.4 and 33.1 lb (16.1 and 15.0 kg), respectively, for the silage, wilted for 1 day and 34.2 and 32.2 lb (15.5 and 14.6 kg) for the silage wilted for 2 days. The effects of the treatments on the composition of the milk were small. It is concluded that the silages treated with formic acid additive were superior to the nntreated silages as a feed for dairy cows.

    Notes: Grass silage made in May from S24 perennial ryegrass was offered ad libitum to twelve Ayrshire cows in a 12-week feeding experiment. The silage had a DM concentration of 217 g kg -1, contained 147 g crude protein per kg DM and had a D-value of 64·6. In addition each cow consumed 1 kg hay per d plus concentrate supplements of dried sugar-beet pulp with (A) soya bean meal, (B)‘Pruteen’, a single-cell protein (C) groundnut cake. The three concentrate supplements each contained 250 g crude protein per kg DM and were offered at the rate of 2·9 kg per 10 kg milk. The daily intakes of silage DM were 8·38, 7·94 and 7·49 kg on treatments A, B and C, respectively, with the extreme values being significantly different. The mean daily yields of milk on treatments A and B were both 16·2 kg per cow, and were significantly higher than the yield of 15·2 kg per cow on treatment C. The fat and lactose contents of the milk on the three treatments were not significantly different, but the CP content on treatment C was significantly lower than that on the other treatments. It is concluded that soya bean meal and‘Pruteen’were superior to groundnut cake as a protein supplement in a silage-based ration.

    Notes: A study of the relationship between some farm and grassland management factors and milk production at the Hannah Dairy Research Institute in the period 1951–70 is reported. During this period various aspects of farm management were altered, and total annual milk production was increased from 28,400 to 63,900 gal. The major factors influencing total milk production, in order of declining importance, were: the overall rate of stocking, milk yield per cow, the numher of milking cows as a percentage of all animals, and the acreage of grass as a percentage of the total farm acreage. Stocking rate and milk yield per cow together explained 85% of the total variation in annual milk production. No significant relationship was found between total milk production and weight of concentrates fed/gal, the amount of fertilizer N applied/aC, rainfall and sunshine data. It is suggested that the lack of a direct relationship between milk prodnction and the amount of fertilizer N applied resulted from the contribution of N from clover and from grazing animals.

    Notes: Three grass silages, all made in mid-Jnne from the same herbage, were compared in a 12-week winter-feeding experiment with 12 Ayrshire cows. The silages were fed ad lib. with a supplement of moist barley and gronndnut cake. Silage A was made from unwilted berbage with no additive, silage B from identical berbage treated with 1/2 gal of formic acidJton (2.24 L/tonne) of berbage, and silage C from the herbage after wilting for 28 b. the DM contents of silages A, B and C were 20.5, 21.1 and 31.8%, respectively, and the contents of digestible organic matter in the DM were 58.9, 68.8 and 67.8%. Silage and total DM intake were bigbest on the treatment containing silage B. the mean dafly milk yields on the treatments with sflages A, B and C were 35.1, 38.0 and 34.3 Ib (15.9, 17.2 and 15.6 kg), respectively and the solids-not-fat (S.N.F.) contents of the milk averaged 8.53, 8.54 and 8.50%. It is concluded tbat silage B, the unwilted silage with formic-acid additive, was superior to botb the untreated and the wilted silage as a feed for dairy cows.

    Notes: Grass silage made in late May from S23 perennial ryegrass was offered to 14 Ayrshire cows in a 16–week winter-feeding experiment. The silage had a DM content of 23.2% and contained 16–8% CP and 70.4% digestible organic matter in the DM. The silage was fed ad lib. as the sole feed in the control treatment, and supplemented with either barley or higuality dried grass cubes at the rate of 2, 3 and 4 kg/10 kg milk (2, 3 and 4 Ib/gal) in the other 6 treatments. The daily intake of silage DM was 11.6 kg/cow (25.6 lb) in the control, and significantly less in the supplement treatments. Silage intakes were higher in the dried grass than in the barley treatments. The mean daily yields of milk were 14.5 kg.cow (32.0 lb) in the control, 15.7, 16.6 and 17.0 kg (34.6.36.6 and 37.5 lb) in the barley treatments, and 17.8, 20.2 and 19.8 kg (39.2, 44.5 and 43.6 lb) in the drierass treatments, at the 2, 3 and 4 kg rates of feeding, respectively. The solidoat (SNF) content of the milk was lowest in the control treatment and highest in the drierass treatments. It is concluded that grass silage of high digestibility could be made successfully on a farm scale and that, with such a silage, a supplement of higuality dried grass was superior to a supplement of barley for milk production.

    Notes: A technique for the automatic recording of the grazing behaviour of dairy cows was investigated, using ‘Vibracorders’ which transmit grazing movement via a pendulum and stylus to a 24 h recording chart. The total labour input was 2 h/day for 6 cows, which gave 144 h of results. In 2 months, 3312 h of recording were obtained. Total grazing time per cow in 24 h was 559 min. on a rigid rotational system of grazing and 638 min. on a system of set stocking. Grazing time was significantly and negatively related to the yield of available herbage DM. It is concluded that if the Vibracorders are sealed and fitted correctly, they are simple, reliable and accurate instruments for automatically measuring the grazing behaviour of dairy cows.

    Notes: The effect of stocking rate and of feeding a supplement of barley on milk yield and quality was studied in an experiment with 18 spring-calved Ayrshire cows grazing from early May until early September in 1964 and 1965. Three treatments were compared: (A) grazing at a normal stocking rate with no supplements fed (the control); (B) grazing at a high stocking rate with no supplements fed; (C) grazing at a high stocking rate, as on treatment B, with a supplement of 8 Ib rolled barley per cow daily. On treatment A, 0.92 ac/cow was used for grazing, plus some conservation, and on treatments B and C, 0.70 and 0.58 ac in 1964 and 1965, respectively. The average daily milk yields were 35.4, 32.9 and 37.0 Ib (16.1, 14.9 and 16.8 kg), respectively, on treatments A, B and C in 1964, and 39.1, 32.3 and 38.8 Ib (17.8, 14.7 and 17.6 kg) in 1965. Milk production/ac was 24 and 32% higher on treatment B than on treatment A in 1964 and 1965, respectively.The response to the barley feeding on treatment C was equivalent to an extra 1 gallon milk from 20 Ib barley in 1964 and from 12 Ib barley in 1965 (10 litres of milk from 20 and 12 kg barley). The total-solids content of the milk from the three treatments was not significantly different. It is concluded that, at the present price of barley and the price received for milk, an increase in stocking rate, with a consequent increase in the milk yield per acre, was more profitable than feeding barley.
