Notes: Abstract A study is made of the lateral tunneling between edge channels at the depletion-induced edges of a gated two-dimensional electron system, through a gate-voltage-controlled barrier arising when the donor layer of the heterostructure is partly removed along a fine strip by means of an atomic force microscope. For a sufficiently high barrier the typical current-voltage characteristic is found to be strongly asymmetric, having, in addition to the positive tunneling branch, a negative branch that corresponds to the current overflowing the barrier. It is established that the barrier height depends linearly on both the gate voltage and the magnetic field, and the data are described in terms of electron tunneling between the outermost edge channels.

Notes: Abstract Coulomb blockade is observed in semiconductor quantum dotsfabricated by scanning probe lithography. We demonstrate thatby combining top gates with in-plane gates, the lithographicshape of a dot can be transferred into the electron gas withhigh accuracy. Furthermore, by applying voltages to the in-plane gates, the number of electrons on the dot can be changedby more than 70 without changing its shape. Transportmeasurements in high magnetic fields and with positive topgate voltages applied indicate that the potential walls of thenanostructure can be made very steep.

Notes: Abstract A fire assay technique has been applied to lower the detection limit for the determination of iridium by neutron activation analysis of geologic samples. Nickel sulfide is used as collector. Detectable iridium was found in ultramafic rocks, correlating there positively with cobalt, nickel and chromium.

Notes: Abstract Neutron activation analysis was used to determine up to 30 elements in the pumice layers from the “Minoan eruption” at Thera (Santorini, Greece). Mt Pilato (Lipari, Italy) and in alluvial pumice from coasts of the Eastern Mediterranean region. The morphologically well distinguishable layers of the “Minoan pumice” were found to be of nearly similar composition in respect to the elements determined and their distribution patterns could therefore be used to identify a sample as Santorinian or not. Additionally, this method was applied to pumice lumps found during archaeological excavations in the Nile delta, Egypt. The results showed that two of the three Egyptian samples are products of the Minoan eruption at Thera and therefore chronologically useful. A second group of pumices collected at Antalya (Turkey), Crete (Greece) and also in Egypt was found to have a distinctly different composition and is therefore related to another volcanic event.

Notes: Abstract Instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA) was used to determine 29 elements in pumice from several volcanic sources (Milos, Nisyros, Yali, Kos and Thera) in the Aegean Sea, Greece, to establish a data basis for the identification of pumice and tephra layers found in archaeological context. The widespread products of the “Minoan Eruption” of the Thera volcano can now be distinguished clearly from all other sources and will be used to establish a datumline in the Eastern Mediterranean Region in the second millenium B.C. The elements Al, As, Ba, Ca, Ce, Co, Cr, Cs, Dy, Eu, Fe, Hf, K, La, Lu, Mn, Na, Nd, Rb, Sb, Sc, Sm, Ta, Ti, Th, U, V, Yb and Zr were determined in 14 samples from Milos, 25 samples from Nisyros, 7 samples from Yali, 7 samples from Kos and 17 samples from Thera. Two cycles of irradiation and four measurement runs were applied. The results were compared and suitable groups, typical for each island, were classified. Due to insufficiently comparable data sets, the criteria for distinguishing the different sources have not been revealed by previous studies. This basic knowledge was used to relate pumice from excavations in Tell-el-Dab'a (Egypt) and Bronze Age Knossos to their specific volcanic origin.

Notes: Abstract A high temperature volatilization technique was applied to lower the detection limit for the determination of mercury in mineral samples by neutron activation analysis to the 10–15 pg range. Activated charcoal was used to trap evaporated mercury. Geologic standard samples and weathering crusts from limestone buildings were analyzed. The data obtained indicate how the concentration of air pollutants varies.

Notes: Abstract Hot gases of volcanic origin (fumaroles) were sampled by means of an activated charcoal filter. The charcoal was specially prepared by a high temperature-vacuum treatment. Mercury, arsenic, bromine, antimony and selenium were determined by activation analysis and compared with literature values. A lightweight pumping station was developed to enable transport to the crater regions of Stromboli and Vulcano. The teflon membrane pump is driven by wind. The filter unit, a specially shaped quartz glass tube, was lowered into the hot vents. The temperature of the sampled fumaroles was 100 to 330°C.

Notes: Abstract Activated charcoals were analyzed by neutron activation analysis to test their applicability as sorbents for some volatile trace elements in volcanic exhalations. A high temperature volatilization process was applied, which reduces the concentrations of some trace elements, in particular Br, Hg, Sb and Zn.

Notes: Abstract Instrumental neutron activation analysis is applied to determine REE in very small, toothlike elements of an extinct animal, the conodont. The results are useful to obtain records of local oceanic events and processes connected to plate tectonics in the Tethys ocean from about 250 to 200 million years ago.
