    Notes: Summary The application of x-ray fluorescence to the determination of the lead content of paint films was evaluated using a portable isotope fluorescence analyser. Accurate determinations were achieved in the laboratory using prepared films in which the lead was dispersed through matrices of constant composition in a single layer. The presence of lead could be masked by overlying paint films of low lead content and was almost obscured by an overlying paint film of 77 mg/cm2. The results for domestic paint films correlated with chemical analyses but the confidence limits were too widely separated to allow application of this technique to lead screening programs. The field results probably reflect non-homogeneity of domestic paint films.

    Notes: Zusammenfassung Die Verbindung von Blei mit menschlichem Hämoglobin wurde in vitro mittels Pb-203 untersucht, wobei man die Anzahl der zugänglichen Verbindungsstellen am Molekül des Hämoglobins und der Verbindungskonstante für den Blei-Hämoglobinkomplex bestimmte. Die Verbindung war weder von der Anwesenheit der β-Ketten noch von freien Sulphydrylgruppen abhängig. Mittels EDTA konnte Blei von Hämolysaten, nicht aber aus intektan Erythrozyten entfernt werden.

    Notes: Abstract A long term programme to assess the impact of reduced lead emissions in the UK has been established in central London and rural Suffolk. Blood lead concentrations of 5 and 6 year old children and their mothers both show an urban-rural difference of about 1.5 μg/dl, which is related to the urban-rural differences in air and dust lead concentrations between areas.
