Notes: Abstract The bulk reactions between triglycidylisocyanurate (TGI) and boric acid, at molar ratios from 5∶1 to 1∶2 have been studied by Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC). The obtained materials were used as additives of polyolefins and the added polymers were investigated by Thermogravimetry (TG) in air in order to observe the variations of their thermal stability with varying the boric acid content. The additives show to increase the degradation temperature of polypropylene, polyethylene and polystyrene.

Notes: Abstract The reactions of phenyl glycidyl ether (PGE) with phosphoric acid in three molar ratios have been studied by means of DSC alone. The results obtained from isothermal measurements are as follows:ΔH=−91.0 kJ/mole PGE(1:1 molar ratio);ΔH=−100.5 kj/mole PGE (1:2/3 molar ratio). The DSC curves obtained from dynamic experiments are multipeaked and giveΔHvalues higher than those obtained from isothermal measurements. These results can be explained by taking into account the acid concentration, the different reactivities of the hydrogens of the phosphoric acid and the possibility that secondary reactions occur.

Notes: The formation of radicals in the thermal degradation of polystyrene (PS) in tubes sealed under vacuum has been evidenced by using ESR spectroscopy. The radicals were found to be stable for weeks at room temperature. The rate coefficients of the formation of radicals have been evaluated in the temperature range 350-420°C. The reaction kinetically followed has been related to the initiation step of the multi-step degradation process of PS. The activation energy of this reaction resulted 185 kJ/mol.

Notes: A method is described for the determination of the acid and alcohol moieties in long chain wax esters. The co-eluting esters are differentiated by means of CGC-MS operating in the ion monitoring mode. The technique allows to detect ester components present in very low amounts in plant surface waxes.

Notes: The pyrolysis gas chromatographic/mass spectrometric behaviour and the electron impact mass spectral fragmentation of triglycidyl isocyanurate have been compared. Carbon dioxide, ethene oxide and acrolein were identified in both experiments, together with similar higher relative molecular mass compounds.

Notes: The study presented addresses the fire behaviour of polypropylene compounded with six classes of flame retardants. The application of cone calorimetry for the assessment of the thermal characteristics of the tested materials and their comparison with thermogravimetry are the central point of this research. This study only presents data for 25 kW/m2 of incident heat flux exposure and includes five tests for polypropylene with no additives and five tests for polypropylene with flame retardants based on triglycidylisocyanurate and lignin. The data collected include the rate of heat release, mass loss rate, char yield, time to ignition and time of total combustion. Results represent meaningful comparison between the behaviour of the materials under simulated fire conditions, using the cone calorimeter, and in the slow dynamic environment utilized in thermogravimetric analysis. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.
