Notes: Summary This paper describes and discusses the anomalous mechanical response of tubular specimens of natural rubber which have been highly stretched in their axial direction and to which a small torsional twist is applied while stress relaxation is taking place. It has been found that whereas the response conforms to the theory of large elastic deformations for stretch ratios up to 3.5, i.e. the torsional modulus is directly proportional to the axial force, for stretch ratios greater than this the response becomes anomalous, and at stretch ratios in excess of about 4.0 the torsional modulus increases as the stress relaxes. This is attributed to the crystallization of the rubber which is known to take place in this range of stretch ratio. The results of recent experiments both of torsional oscillations where the rubber specimen provides the restoring couple and of the response of stretched rubber tubes to small step twists are described, and the theoretical representation of this type of response is outlined. The effects of different ambient temperatures on the response are also described.

Notes: Abstract Finite deformations with wrinkling for isotropic elastic membranes of arbitrary initial shape are discussed. The shape of the deformed membrane in a wrinkled region is governed by a parabolic equation that does not involve material properties, and the stress field is governed by an elliptic system that involves the scalar force-stretch function. For axisymmetric deformations of surfaces of revolution, solution of these equations involves only integration and function inversion.

Notes: Summary Finite, plane buckling deformations of slabs or columns composed of initially straight, parallel fibers embedded in a weaker matrix are discussed. The fibers are treated as continuously distributed and inextensible, and the composite is treated as incompressible. It is found that the critical buckling load, per unit of length normal to the plane of deformation, isGH, the infinitesimal shear modulusG times the widthH of the column. Stability of buckled states is considered. Limits on the applicability of the present theory to real composites are discussed.

Notes: Summary It is shown that in flow slow enough to be close toNewtonian flow, the deviation of the volume rate of flow from theNewtonian value can be evaluated directly from theNewtonian solution, without solving any new equation. The efflux formula involves a characteristic number depending on the cross-sectional shape. This number is evaluated for several simple shapes and is found to be relatively insensitive to the precise form of the cross-section.

Notes: Summary The theory of nets with bending stiffness is meant to model some aspects of the mechanical behavior of cloth and cable networks. We use this theory to study the effect of small bending stiffness in plane deformations. It is shown that the theory of perfectly flexible networks gives an adequate approximation except at places where that theory predicts discontinuous changes in fiber directions, and at boundaries along fibers. In such regions singular perturbation methods can be used to analyze the stress and deformation.

Notes: Summary In viscoelastic flow of an incompressible fluid down a straight trough of arbitrary cross-section, the normal stress effect produces a distortion of the free surface. In slow flow, the shape is given in the lowest order of approximation in terms of the axial velocity for Newtonian flow. Equations governing the second-order perturbation are derived.

Notes: Abstract A network formed from two initially orthogonal families of cables is supported at its edges and allowed to sag under its own weight. The net is idealized as a continuum formed from inextensible fibers, with no shear resistance. Several families of exact solutions are exhibited, all involving catenaries in one way or another. These solutions may be useful in connection with perturbation analyses of boundary-value problems.
