    Description: On DSDP Leg 84, drilling was conducted at three gas-hydrate-bearing sites on the Middle America Trench slope off Costa Rica (Site 565) and off Guatemala (Sites 568 and 570). At Site 569, on the mid-slope off Guatemala, hydrates may be present, according to the seismic profile (GUA-13), although the pore-water composition does not provide clear evidence. Sites 566 and 567, on the lower Guatemala Trench slope, appear to be free of hydrates, except in fractures of serpentinite at the bottom of Hole 566. Hydrate-bearing Sites 565, 568, and 570 show the effects of hydrate decomposition on pore-water chemistry that have been established during previous drilling at Sites 496 and 497 on the Guatemala Trench slope. These include a chlorinity decrease and d18O increase downsection. The new results, however, reveal more complex relationships between the chlorinity decrease and d18O increase than previously recognized. At Site 565, d18O values decrease in the middle section of the hole, whereas chlorinity continues to decrease from the top to near the bottom of the hole. Early diagenetic alteration of volcanic glass is suggested as a mechanism for the unexpected minimum in the O-isotope curve. Multiple fractionation by the pore-water/hydrate system is required to explain d18O-values greater than 2.7 per mil at the bottom of Hole 568, because with a fractionation factor of alpha = 1.0027, this is the maximum figure a single-stage fractionation could produce. In situ water samples from hydrate zones in most cases failed to display the elevated salinities expected for the residual pore waters not involved in hydrate formation. This is probably because the in situ sampling device still allows a systematic pressure drop sufficient to trigger hydrate decomposition in the immediate vicinity of the sample port.

    Description: Heavy and light minerals were examined in 29 samples from Sites 494, 498, 499, 500, and 495 on the Deep Sea Drilling Project Leg 67 Middle America Trench transect; these sites represent lower slope, trench, and oceanic crust environments off Guatemala. All samples are Quaternary except those from Hole 494A (Pliocene) and Hole 498A (Miocene). Heavy-mineral assemblages of the Quaternary sediments are characterized by an immature pyroxene-amphibole suite with small quantities of olivine and epidote. The Miocene sediments yielded an assemblage dominated by epidote and pyroxene but lacking olivine; the absence of olivine is attributed to selective removal of the most unstable components by intrastratal solution. Light-mineral assemblages of all samples are predominantly characterized by volcanic glass and plagioclase feldspar. The feldspar compositions are compatible with andesitic source rocks and frequently exhibit oscillatory zoning. The heavy- and light-mineral associations of these sediments suggest a proximal volcanic source, most probably the Neogene highland volcanic province of Guatemala. Sand-sized components from Site 495 are mainly biogenic skeletons and volcanic glass and, in one instance (Section 495-5-3), euhedral crystals of gypsum.

    Description: An additional Heinrich ice-rafting event is identified between Heinrich events 5 and 6 in eight cores from the Labrador Sea and the northwest Atlantic Ocean. It is characterized by sediment rich in detrital carbonate (40% CaCO3) with high concentration of floating dropstones, high coarse-fraction (% 〉 150 µm) content, and has a sharp contact with the underlying but grades into the overlying hemipelagic sediment. It also shows lighter d18ONpl values, indicating freshening due to iceberg rafting and/or meltwater discharge. This event is correlated with Dansgaard-Oeschger event 14 and interpreted as an additional Heinrich event, H5a. The thickness of H5a in the Labrador Sea reaches up to 220 cm. This additional Heinrich event has also been reported in cores PS2644 and SO82-5 from the northern North Atlantic. With the recognition of H5a the temporal spacing between Heinrich events 1 to 6 becomes more uniform (~7 ka).

    Description: Stable isotope studies of Cl, O, and H carried out in addition to routine shipboard chemical analyses performed during Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 164 aid in constraining estimates of hydrate concentration and mechanisms of hydrate formation and dissociation in the submarine hydrate zone of the Blake Ridge in the West Atlantic. Chlorine isotope ratios show a steady downward decrease from a shallow maximum of about 0 per mil near the roof of the hydrate zone (postulated to occur at 24 mbsf) to a d37Cl value of -3.68 per mil near the bottom of Site 997, one of the more negative Cl-isotope values measured in marine pore waters. The downward depletion in the heavy isotope is coupled with a chlorinity decrease, determined by the shipboard measurements. Modeling of the chlorine isotopic data provides an independent test of the hydrochemical model developed by Egeberg and Dickens to explain the chlorinity profile of Site 997. According to that model, the downward chlorinity decrease is largely due to advection of low-chlorinity water from below the drilled section, the difference to the shallow maximum being bridged by diffusion. Using the Egeberg and Dickens advection-diffusion model for the Cl-isotope data gives the best fit between measured trend and simulation for an upward advection rate of 0.18 mm/yr and an assumed ratio of 1.0023 for the diffusion coefficients of the light and heavy Cl isotopes. The low-chlorinity water advected from below the drilled section carries the 37Cl-depleted isotopic signature, but the source of this water is unknown, as are the mechanisms for the heavy isotope depletion. Fractionation of the chlorine isotopes due to different mobilities during downward diffusion from the chloride maximum can only explain a minor portion of the 37Cl depletion. Positive d18O and dD spikes in the upper part of the section drilled at Site 997 are within the range of isotopic excursions during the Quaternary glaciations and can be explained by inheritance from buried connate waters, like the chloride maximum in the upper 24 mbsf, whereas the effects of hydrate formation (salt exclusion and preferential uptake of the heavy isotopes) are minor due to the low hydrate concentrations at the site. Negative d18O values 〈= 0.6 per mil in the middle of the section between 159 and 532 mbsf largely reflect authigenic carbonate formation, whereas the solid reaction partners that cause negative dD spikes below 200 mbsf remain unknown. Heavy oxygen and hydrogen isotope spikes between 200 mbsf and the base of the hydrate zone at 452 mbsf correspond to low-chlorinity spikes, indicating hydrate dissociation in local, hydrate-rich sediment layers. Overall, oxygen isotope ratios increase below 300 mbsf, whereas hydrogen isotope ratios show a general downward decrease for the site.
