Notizen: It is well known that thermocapillary convection arises in liquid bridges when the support discs are heated differentially and uniformly. Upon increasing the temperature difference, the convective flow shows a transition from an axisymmetric to an oscillatory regime. This phenomenon has been investigated both experimentally and theoretically, but prior experimental results exhibit some discrepancies with respect to the predictions of stability analyses. The present paper discusses experimental results obtained under microgravity conditions, comparing them with previous experimental observations made on ground and in space and with recent theoretical models of the instability. The results agree with the description of oscillations in terms of superposition of hydrothermal waves. Finally, a possible mechanism for a "pulsating" instability is proposed, together with a new scaling law for the oscillation frequencies at onset; this law, which correlates the critical frequency to the fluid properties, the geometrical parameters and the critical temperature difference, agrees with all the available experimental data. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: The shape of the interstitial air film between noncoalescing liquids and between a drop and a solid surface is detected by means of laser interferometry. Alternative optical techniques are exploited to reveal the film profile and absolute thickness and its dynamical behavior. In particular, the thickness of the film is measured, by means of an angle shift method, in the case of a drop resting on a solid surface; further experiments, based upon reflectometry, show that stable noncoalescence may be realized both under steady and time-dependent conditions of the interfaces. A light deflection technique, coupled with image analysis, is exploited to detect the features of the film unsteadiness. The related Fourier spectra are explicitly calculated. The procedure for the determination of the film thickness is explained with the aid of a specific numerical code that is able to simulate the interference fringe patterns generated by thin films. The results presented herewith are explained in terms of theory of lubrication, exploiting the experimental data as boundary conditions that allow one to uncouple the stress–balance equations at the interfaces and the lubrication equations and solve only the latter ones. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: (Pro-Pro-Gly)10 is one of the most widely studied collagen polypeptide models. Microgravity crystal growth of (Pro-Pro-Gly)10 was carried out in the Advanced Protein Crystallization Facility aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery during the STS-95 mission. Crystals were successfully grown in all experiments, using both dialysis and free-interface diffusion methods. The quality of the microgravity-grown crystals and of ground-grown counterparts was assessed by X-ray synchrotron diffraction. Microgravity-grown crystals exhibited a significant improvement in terms of dimensions and resolution limit. As previously reported, crystals were orthorhombic, space group P212121. However, the diffraction pattern showed weak reflections, never previously measured, that were consistent with new unit-cell parameters a = 26.9, b = 26.4, c = 182.5 Å. This allowed the derivation of a new model for the arrangement of the triple-helical molecules in the crystals.

Notizen: Crystals of alcohol dehydrogenase from Sulfolobus solfataricus were grown in the Advanced Protein Crystallization Facility during the Life and Microgravity Sciences Spacelab mission on the US Space Shuttle. Large diffracting crystals were obtained by dialysis, whereas only poor-quality crystals were obtained by vapour diffusion. The quality of both the microgravity and ground-based crystals was analysed by X-ray diffraction. There was some improvement in terms of size and diffraction resolution limit for the microgravity crystals. However, the twinning observed in the Earth-grown crystals was also present for those grown in microgravity.

Notizen: The Advanced Protein Crystallization Facility is widely used by European and US teams to study protein crystal growth under microgravity conditions. This paper describes the laboratory equipment developed to observe the crystals, by means of a charge-coupled-device camera, during the growth process on the ground inside the hanging-drop reactors of the Advanced Protein Crystallization Facility. The apparatus was used during ground tests performed to prepare the microgravity experimentation, allowing a time reduction in determining the crystallization conditions to be used for the microgravity experiment.

Notizen: Abstract In this paper we propose a fuzzy rule-based algorithm for solvingclassification problems related to tactile sensing. A tactile sensing systemis a robotic device which gives an image of contacting objects. While thefine form recognition problem has been widely discussed and severaltechniques have been proposed for its solution (Bayesian approach or Neuralalgorithms), less attention has been paid to the problem of deciding whetherthe object belongs to a particular class or set of objects that share acommon feature, also known as tactile primitive. As input data we considerthe sum of the normal stresses at the sensing sites. Three levels ofclassification, hierarchically connected, are analyzed and, for each level, different basis variables with their membership functions are proposed andcalibrated using a training procedure. The output is an answer regarding thefeatures of the object at each level and is related to the truth values ofthe fuzzy classes. The numerical experiences show that, at least for dataaffected by low noise level, the algorithm has a very high percentage ofcorrect answers.

    Notizen: Abstract We present a study of $$B\bar B$$ meson pair production inπ − interactions at 140, 194 and 286 GeV incident pion energy. At 286 GeV, where we have the best statistics, we find a model-dependent $$B\bar B$$ production cross-section $$\sigma _{BB} = 14_{ - 6}^{ + 7} nb/nucleon$$ .

Notizen: Abstract The minimization of a quadratic function subject to bilinear constraints is proven to be equivalent to the unconstrained minimization of an augmented Lagrangian of the type introduced by Di Pillo and Grippo, under assumptions weaker than those used in the general case. Two applications are reported: the parameter identification problem for a discrete linear system and the optimal control of a bilinear discrete system.

Notizen: Abstract The optimization of the output matrix for a discrete-time, single-output, linear stochastic system is approached from two different points of view. Firstly, we investigate the problem of minimizing the steady-state filter error variance with respect to a time-invariant output matrix subject to a norm constraint. Secondly, we propose a filter algorithm in which the output matrix at timek is chosen so as to maximize the difference at timek+1 between the variance of the prediction error and that of the a posteriori error. For this filter, boundedness of the covariance and asymptotic stability are investigated. Several numerical experiments are reported: they give information about the limiting behavior of the sequence of output matrices generated by the algorithm and the corresponding error covariance. They also enable us to make a comparison with the results obtained by solving the former problem.
