Description: Extended x ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) is observed as a modulation on the high energy side of an x ray absorption edge. It occurs when the photo-ejected electron wave is scattered by neighboring atoms in a solid, and interference occurs between the outgoing and scattered waves. The result is that the absorption spectrum carries a signature that is characteristic of the identity and disposition of scattering atoms around the absorbing atom. Therefore, it may be shown that the Fourier transform of the normalized EXAFS can provide detailed information about the immediate environment of specific atoms in a solid and is ideally suited to the study of cosmic dusts. A study of cosmic dust was initiated using EXAFS and other techniques. The simplest type of cosmic material, namely iron meteorites, was investigated.

Description: Extensive efforts have been dedicated to deciphering the interactions associated with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). However, these developments are hampered by a lack of efficient strategies to avoid beneficial synergies being offset by harmful trade-offs. To fill these gaps, we used causal diagnosis and network analysis methods to construct 1302 directed networks of SDGs for 31 provinces in China from 2000 to 2020. We observed a dramatic offsetting effect of SDG synergies and trade-offs in China from 2000 to 2020, with approximately 27% of trade-off indicator pairs turning into synergies and about 25% of the synergy indicator pairs turning into trade-offs. However, our findings suggested that prioritising the progress of high-frequency indicators in virtuous cycles could multiply the positive systemic effects of the SDGs. Moreover, controlling the transition from passive to active in the trade-off network of SDGs remains a challenge in advancing the SDGs holistically.

Description: Earth system modelling (ESM) is essential for understanding past, present and future Earth processes. Deep learning (DL), with the data-driven strength of neural networks, has promise for improving ESM by exploiting information from Big Data. Yet existing hybrid ESMs largely have deep neural networks incorporated only during the initial stage of model development. In this Perspective, we examine progress in hybrid ESM, focusing on the Earth surface system, and propose a framework that integrates neural networks into ESM throughout the modelling lifecycle. In this framework, DL computing systems and ESM-related knowledge repositories are set up in a homogeneous computational environment. DL can infer unknown or missing information, feeding it back into the knowledge repositories, while the ESM-related knowledge can constrain inference results of the DL. By fostering collaboration between ESM-related knowledge and DL systems, adaptive guidance plans can be generated through question-answering mechanisms and recommendation functions. As users interact iteratively, the hybrid system deepens its understanding of their preferences, resulting in increasingly customized, scalable and accurate guidance plans for modelling Earth processes. The advancement of this framework necessitates interdisciplinary collaboration, focusing on explainable DL and maintaining observational data to ensure the reliability of simulations.
