    Description: A perturbation approach for the gravitoelectrodynamic forces encountered in the corotating plasma environment of Saturn is used to determine the stability of charged grains, given a random initial velocity. Attention is given to the implications of the Northrop and Hill (1982) and Mendis et al. (1982) results for the formation of the Saturnian ring system, and it is suggested that the marginal z stability radius at 1.5245 Saturn radii for Kepler-launched particles is due to an erosion process with ejecta of the order 0.05-0.5 microns, rather than that of the previously suggested plasma. The diffuseness of the Saturnian rings beyond the F ring is also explained in terms of instability, while a new critical radius for r instability is suggestd for the optical depth feature at 1.72 Saturn radii. The F ring is analyzed in detail.

    Description: Using data from the Electrostatic Energy-vs-Charge Analyzer of the IMP-7 and -8 satellites for October 1973-October 1974, evidence is adduced for the neutral sheet association of bursts of ions and electrons in the 10 to 500 KeV energy range that have been frequently observed in the earth's magnetotail. It is also noted that the degree of asymmetry for the ion distribution is less for lower energy ions. On the basis of the correlation of the particle bursts with AE indices, two particle acceleration mechanisms are proposed.

    Description: eXTP is a science mission designed to study the state of matter under extreme conditions of density, gravity and magnetism. Primary goals are the determination of the equation of state of matter at supra-nuclear density, the measurement of QED effects in highly magnetized star, and the study of accretion in the strong-field regime of gravity. Primary targets include isolated and binary neutron stars, strong magnetic field systems like magnetars, and stellar-mass and supermassive black holes. The mission carries a unique and unprecedented suite of state-of-the-art scientific instruments enabling for the first time ever the simultaneous spectral-timing-polarimetry studies of cosmic sources in the energy range from 0.5-30 keV (and beyond). Key elements of the payload are: the Spectroscopic Focusing Array (SFA) - a set of 11 X-ray optics for a total effective area of approx. 0.9 m(exp. 2) and 0.6 m(exp. 2) at 2 keV and 6 keV respectively, equipped with Silicon Drift Detectors offering less than 180 eV spectral resolution; the Large Area Detector (LAD) - a deployable set of 640 Silicon Drift Detectors, for a total effective area of approx. 3.4 m(exp. 2), between 6 and 10 keV, and spectral resolution better than 250 eV; the Polarimetry Focusing Array (PFA) - a set of 2 X-ray telescope, for a total effective area of 250 cm(exp. 2) at 2 keV, equipped with imaging gas pixel photoelectric polarimeters; the Wide Field Monitor (WFM) - a set of 3 coded mask wide field units, equipped with position-sensitive Silicon Drift Detectors, each covering a 90 degrees x 90 degrees field of view. The eXTP international consortium includes major institutions of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Universities in China, as well as major institutions in several European countries and the United States. The predecessor of eXTP, the XTP mission concept, has been selected and funded as one of the so-called background missions in the Strategic Priority Space Science Program of the Chinese Academy of Sciences since 2011. The strong European participation has significantly enhanced the scientific capabilities of eXTP. The planned launch date of the mission is earlier than 2025.

    Description: The spatial distributions of energetic ion and electron bursts on the IMP 7 and 8 satellites in the earth's magnetotail were studied. It was found that the ion bursts were more frequently detected in the dusk than in the dawn quarter of the neutral sheet whereas the electron bursts, more frequently in the dawn than the dusk quarter. The degree of dawn-dusk asymmetry is however energy dependent; the distribution for higher energy particle bursts exhibits higher degree of asymmetry. The morphologies of the distributions manifest themselves as seasonal variations of the most probable solar ecliptic latitudes at which the ion and electron bursts were observed. The amplitudes of the variations are about 25 deg with the seasonal variation for ions leading that for electrons by about 2 months.

    Description: The main objective of this research is to extract fault features from sensor faults and process faults by using advanced fault detection and isolation (FDI) algorithms. A tank system that has some common characteristics to a NASA testbed at Stennis Space Center was used to verify our proposed algorithms. First, a generic tank system was modeled. Second, a mathematical model suitable for FDI has been derived for the tank system. Third, a new and general FDI procedure has been designed to distinguish process faults and sensor faults. Extensive simulations clearly demonstrated the advantages of the new design.

    Description: This article investigates the event-triggered adaptive containment control problem for a class of stochastic nonlinear multiagent systems with unmeasurable states. A stochastic system with unknown heterogeneous dynamics is established to describe the agents in a random vibration environment. Besides, the uncertain nonlinear dynamics are approximated by radial basis function neural networks (NNs), and the unmeasured states are estimated by constructing the NN-based observer. In addition, the switching-threshold-based event-triggered control method is adopted with the hope of reducing communication consumption and balancing system performance and network constraints. Moreover, we develop the novel distributed containment controller by utilizing the adaptive backstepping control strategy and the dynamic surface control (DSC) approach such that the output of each follower converges to the convex hull spanned by multiple leaders, and all signals of the closed-loop system are cooperatively semi-globally uniformly ultimately bounded in mean square. Finally, we verify the efficiency of the proposed controller by the simulation examples.
