    Description: For molecular crystals, a procedure is proposed for interpreting experimentally determined atomic mean square anisotropic displacement parameters (ADPs) in terms of the overall molecular vibration together with internal vibrations with the assumption that the molecule consists of a set of linked rigid segments. The internal librations (molecular torsional or bending modes) are described using the variable internal coordinates of the segmented body. With this procedure, the experimental ADPs obtained from crystal structure determinations involving six small molecules (sym-trinitrobenzene, adenosine, tetra-cyanoquinodimethane, benzamide, alpha-cyanoacetic acid hydrazide and N-acetyl-L-tryptophan methylamide) have been analyzed. As a consequence, vibrational corrections to the bond lengths and angles of the molecule are calculated as well as the frequencies and force constants for each internal torsional or bending vibration.

    Description: The three-dimensional structure of a human monoclonal antibody (Fab), which binds specifically to a major epitope of the transmembrane protein gp41 of the human immunodeficiency virus type 1, has been determined by crystallographic methods to a resolution of 2.7 A. It has been previously determined that this antibody recognizes the epitope SGKLICTTAVPWNAS, belongs to the subclass IgG1 (kappa), and exhibits antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity. The quaternary structure of the Fab is in an extended conformation with an elbow bend angle between the constant and variable domains of 175 degrees. Structurally, four of the hypervariable loops can be classified according to previously recognized canonical structures. The third hypervariable loops of the heavy (H3) and light chain (L3) are structurally distinct. Hypervariable loop H3, residues 102H-109H, is unusually extended from the surface. The complementarity-determining region forms a hydrophobic binding pocket that is created primarily from hypervariable loops L3, H3, and H2.

    Description: Procedures for achieving attitude control of single-body and multibody, tethered spacecraft are examined. The design considerations for attitude control and the generation of control torques are described. Two dimensional tether attach point motion is utilized to produce torque about two axes and the third axis is controlled with either a control moment gyro or a reaction wheel. The ability to perform attitude control of a tethered spacecraft is evaluated in the Kinetic Isolation Tether Experiment (KITE). It is observed that the KITE/SPARTAN design bandwidth is adequate to fully utilize the capability of attitude sensors with accuracies in the 1-arcsec range.

    Description: Comprehensive inviscid and viscous numerical simulations of hypersonic flow past nonconical rounded-nose waveriders are presented. The flow fields and aerodynamic forces at off-design conditions are determined inviscidly by a space-marching CFD code with the initial-data plane provided by a time-marching Navier-Stokes CFD code. Off-design conditions include off-design Mach numbers, angles of attack, and rounded leading edges. A wide range of waverider configurations is investigated and compared. These calculations show the effects of viscous interactions, which are influential near the leading edges, and determine the viscous drag. The inviscid calculations show that L/D decreases as freestream M increases (with alpha = 0). At the on-design Mach numbers, the maximum L/D may occur at slight positive or negative alpha, depending on the shape of the waverider, and zero lift occurs at a negative alpha approximately equal to half of the body thickness. The effects of slight leading-edge blunting produce only local effects in the flow field and small losses in L/D.

    Description: Using objective-prism plates taken with the 44-arcmin objective prism mounted on the UK Schmidt telescope, 53 emission-line quasar candidates and 29 ultraviolet-excess objects (possible low-redshift quasars) have been found in a 5 x 5-degree field centered on 12 h 27 m, + 13 deg 30 min (1950) in the Virgo cluster of galaxies. Eighteen of these 82 candidates were observed using the double spectrograph on the Palomar 5-meter telescope; 13 of the observed objects proved to be quasars. The broad-absorption-line QSO Q1232 + 134 is the first example of the class to show broad low-ionization absorption lines (such as Mg II 2798 A) in addition to the usual high-excitation lines such as Nv 1240 A. Although no conclusive evidence for quasar-galaxy associations is found in this field, there do exist nonuniformities in the distribution of the quasar candidates which may merit further investigation. These objects will provide a useful network of probes for absorbing material in the Virgo cluster. The lines-of-sight to two of the confirmed quasars pass very close to NGC galaxies; the respective projected QSO-galaxy separations are only 4 and 11 kpc at the assumed distance of the Virgo cluster.

    Description: The effects of thermospheric winds and electric fields on the ionospheric F2-layer are controlled by the geometry of the magnetic field, and so vary with latitude and longitude. A simple model of the daytime F2-layer is adopted and the effects at midlatitudes (25-65 deg geographic) of three processes that accompany geomagnetic storms: (1) thermospheric changes due to auroral heating; (2) equatorward winds that tend to cancel the quiet-day poleward winds; and (3) the penetration of magnetospheric electric fields are studied. At +/- 65 deg, the effects of heating and electric fields are strongest in the longitudes toward which the geomagnetic dipole is tilted, i.e., the North American and the South Indian Ocean sectors. Because of the proximity of the geomagnetic equator to the East Asian and South American sectors, the reverse is true at +/- 25 deg.

    Description: The present study has been motivated by the ICE wave measurements. It is found that the newborn cometary ions, particularly the protons, can excite whistlers and waves with frequencies much higher than the proton gyrofrequency but with mixed electrostatic and electromagnetic polarization. For the case of oblique propagation the newborn ions are treated as if they are unmagnetized. This is justified not only because the wave frequencies are high but also because the growth rates are large. On the other hand in the case of parallel propagation the growth rate is much smaller, and the excitation process seems to be unimportant.

    Description: Stochastic differential equations (SDEs) are mathematical models that are widely used to describe complex processes or phenomena perturbed by random noise from different sources. The identification of SDEs governing a system is often a challenge because of the inherent strong stochasticity of data and the complexity of the system’s dynamics. The practical utility of existing parametric approaches for identifying SDEs is usually limited by insufficient data resources. This study presents a novel framework for identifying SDEs by leveraging the sparse Bayesian learning (SBL) technique to search for a parsimonious, yet physically necessary representation from the space of candidate basis functions. More importantly, we use the analytical tractability of SBL to develop an efficient way to formulate the linear regression problem for the discovery of SDEs that requires considerably less time-series data. The effectiveness of the proposed framework is demonstrated using real data on stock and oil prices, bearing variation, and wind speed, as well as simulated data on well-known stochastic dynamical systems, including the generalized Wiener process and Langevin equation. This framework aims to assist specialists in extracting stochastic mathematical models from random phenomena in the natural sciences, economics, and engineering fields for analysis, prediction, and decision making.
