Description: The National Geophysical Data Center archives data of the solar-terrestrial environment. The USAF Radio Solar Telescope Network (RSTN) data allow performance of time series analysis to determine temporal oscillations as low as three seconds. The X13/3B flare which erupted in region 4474 (S12E43) on the 24 to 25 of April 1984, was selected. The soft X-rays, 1 to 8 A, remained above X-levels for 50 minutes and the radio emissions measured at Learmonth Solar Observatory reached a maximum of 3.15 x 10 to the 5th power SFUs at 410 MHz at 0000UT. A power spectral analysis of the fixed frequency RSTN data from Learmonth shows possible quasi-periodic fluctuations in the range two to ten seconds. Repetition rates or quasi-periodicities, in the case of the power spectral analysis, generally showed the same trends as the average solar radio flux at 245 and 8800 MHz. The quasi-periodicities at 1415 MHz showed no such trends.

Description: Examples of earth-looking hand-held photography and orbital sensor imagery of ocean features and phenomena in the framework of the Space Shuttle Earth Observations Project are presented. These include images of a floating substance in Capricorn Channel off northeastern Queensland, Australia; atolls in the central Maldive Islands; a spiral eddy and probable oil slick in the Caribbean Sea north of Aruba; and spiral eddies recorded in sun glint over the Mozambique Channel. It is concluded that the observation of the world's oceans during Shuttle missions with the trained eyes of the crewmen and documentation with hand-held photography add a significant dimension to the remote sensing of the ocean.

Description: Extrapolation of impact cratering rates derived from Canada and Europe suggests that in the cratonic regions of Australia, India, Africa, and Brazil, 14-15 impact craters 20 km diameter should have formed during the last 120 my, and survived erosional erasure. In fact, in these areas, only 2 craters are known that approximately qualify: (1) Gosses Bluff, 22 km, 130 + or - 6 my old, and; Strangways, 24 km and 150 + or - 70 my old. It is therefore likely that about a dozen relatively large and preserved impact craters await discovery in these less explored cratons. A larger number of younger and smaller craters must also exist. An informal search is reported for impact craters using photographs obtained by Shuttle astronauts. Photographs taken with the 250 mm lens on Hassalblad cameras have a resolution of 25 m and cover a nominal area of 50x60 sq km. A larger format Linhof camera with similar resolution but 4 times larger area was flown March 1984, and will fly again in the future. Shuttle imagery has numerous advantages in looking for impact craters and for other types of Earth observations.

Description: Glandless valve shuts down high-pressure fluid systems when severe shock from an explosion or earthquake occurs. The valve uses a pendulum to support the valve closure plug in the open position. When jarred, the valve body is moved relative to the pendulum and the plug support is displaced, allowing the plug to seat and be held by spring pressure.
