    Description: Although there is a preponderance of evidence that tektites were formed by asteroid impacts on the earth, no source crater has been found for the largest and youngest of the strewn fields - the Austalasian strewn field. A combined Seasat/Geos 3 altimeter data set of sea surface heights in the northern portion of the Australasian strewn field has been examined for negative gravity anomalies on the continental shelf and slope which might be related to the source crater for these tektites. A large negative anomaly called the Qui Nhon Slope Anomaly is a sea surface depression of approximately 1.5 meters over an area of 100 km diameter. It corresponds to a gravity anomaly of about -50 mgal. It is proposed that this anomaly may be due to the impact structure that produced the Australasian strewn field.

    Description: Glass from the West Clearwater Lake hypervelocity impact crater contains numerous spheroids, 10 to 500 microns across, which appear to have formed at high temperatures as fluids immiscible in the enclosing melt. The spheroids are distinguished from small, normal, largely void gas vesicles, which are also present, by being completely filled in all cases; by having fillings which vary in composition from spheroid to spheroid, even between spheroids in close association; and by indications that the present fillings are representative of the contents present before the matrix melt chilled. Most of the spheroids are classified petrographically into three types. The preservation of spheroids in the West Clearwater Lake glass is attributed mainly to the position of the glass masses within the breccias lining the crater floor. It is considered that the glass in this location did not achieve free flight but, as part of a large mass, cooled relatively slowly through the high temperature regime in which the spheroids were generated, and then, when detached, chilled rapidly to preserve a record of this transient stage in their history.

    Description: The major-element compositions of 47 individual Chainpur (LL-3) chondrules were determined. There appears to be no correlation between Na and Al, in contrast with the correlation previously found in Bjurbole chondrules in which these elements are characteristically found in equal molar proportions. The correlation in Bjurbole chondrules is considered to be the effect of metamorphism. The compositional variations among Chainpur chondrules point to a fractionation which basically involved only silica. This can best be explained as being the result of vapor fractionation which took place during or after the formation of the chondrules. The ratio of Ca to Al in the individual chondrules is generally close to the value 1.08, which has been found to be characteristic of the chondrites in general.

    Description: The compositions of chondritic meteorites are linked to the solar composition. It is believed that the chemistry of the (generally) drop-shaped chondrules which comprise a large portion of these meteorites may present valuable clues to their formation and, ultimately, to the early conditions and processes of the planets. The purpose of this experiment is to determine the nature of volatilization-fractionation of silicate (and related metallic) compositions related to chondrite composition.
