    Description: We present X-ray spectra obtaiined by ASCA of two single, active stars, the G dwarf pi(1) UMa, and the G9/K0 giant Beta Cet. The spectra of both stars require the presence of at least two plasma components with different temperatures, 0.3-0.4 keV and approximately 0.7 keV, in order for acceptable fits to be obtained. The spectral resolving power and signal-to-noise ratio of the solid state imaging spectrometer (SIS) spectra allow us to formally constrain the coronal abundances of a number of elements. In Beta Cet, we find Mg to be overabundant, while other elements such as O, Ne, and N are underabundant, relative to the solar photospheric values. From the lower signal-to-noise ratio SIS spectrum of pi(1) UMa, we find evidence for underabundances of O, Ne, and Fe. These results are discussed in the context of the present understanding of elemental abundances in solar and stellar coronae.

    Description: AY Cet is a single-line binary comprised of a spotted G5 III primary and a white dwarf secondary. A series of UV spectra have been obtained with the IUE satellite on five different dates covering a substantial part of the optical cycle of the primary star. No evidence that the continuum or the Ly-alpha absorption line of the secondary star varied is found. There were significant changes in the strengths of the UV emission lines, but the variations were only weakly correlated with either the orbital phase of the binary or the rotational phase of the primary. The UV emission lines were especially strong near maximum visual brightness at a time when the starspot(s) on the primary was least visible. The enhanced line emission is attributed to a flare event on the primary, most likely at a high-latitude site close to the pole of this star. The UV radiative losses of this flare were comparable with those of flares previously observed on the RC CVn variables Lambda And and HR 1099.

    Description: IUE observations of C II lambda1335 and C IV lambda1549 and ground-based observations of He I lambda5876 have previously discovered intense levels of chromospheric activity among early F type stars. Virtually all F dwarfs show stronger chromospheric and transition region emission than do the cooler and more deeply convective dwarf stars like the Sun. The IUE spectra and those of He lambda5876 place the onset of stellar activity along the main sequence near a color B - V = 0.28, which corresponds approximately to spectral type FO and an effective temperature of 7300 K. However, existing X-ray observations of A and F stars suggest that coronal activity may reach a peak blueward of this high temperature boundary at B - V = 0.28 before vanishing among the early and mid A-type stars. Discussed are preliminary results of a new effort to refine the location of the high temperature boundary to chromospheric activity among A- and F- type stars, making use of low dispersion short-wavelength spectra from the IUE archives from which the strengths of C IV, C II, and Lyman alpha emission have been measured.

    Description: We report on the first simultaneous Extreme-Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE) and optical observations of flares on the dMe flare star AD Leonis. The data show the following features: (1) Two flares (one large and one of moderate size) of several hours duration were observed in the EUV wavelength range; (2) Flare emission observed in the optical precedes the emission seen with EUVE; and (3) Several diminutions (DIMs) in the optical continuum were observed during the period of optical flare activity. To interpret these data, we develop a technique for deriving the coronal loop length from the observed rise and decay behavior of the EUV flare. The technique is generally applicable to existing and future coronal observations of stellar flares. We also determine the pressure, column depth, emission measure, loop cross-sectional area, and peak thermal energy during the two EUV flares, and the temperature, area coverage, and energy of the optical continuum emission. When the optical and coronal data are combined, we find convincing evidence of a stellar 'Neupert effect' which is a strong signature of chromospheric evaporation models. We then argue that the known spatial correlation of white-light emission with hard X-ray emission in solar flares, and the identification of the hard X-ray emission with nonthermal bremsstrahlung produced by accelerated electrons, provides evidence that flare heating on dMe stars is produced by the same electron precipitation mechanism that is inferred to occur on the Sun. We provide a thorough picture of the physical processes that are operative during the largest EUV flare, compare and contrast this picture with the canonical solar flare model, and conclude that the coronal loop length may be the most important factor in determining the flare rise time and energetics.

    Description: A 23 ks ROSAT PSPC image of the young star cluster, IC 2391, reveals 76 soft x-ray sources with L(sub x)(0.2-2.0 keV) greater than or equal to 2 x 10(exp 28) ergs/s in the direction of the cluster center. Nineteen of these sources are associated with known cluster members. We find that x-ray emission from the IC 2391 B stars deviates widely from the L(sub x)/L(sub bol) = 10(exp -7) relation based on Einstein observations of O and early B stars. Instead, we observe a wide range in L(sub x) with an order of magnitude spread at any given mass and no apparent dependence on spectral type. A comparison of the spread of L(sub x) as a function of B-V for low-mass stars between IC 2391 and the much older Hyades cluster shows that despite the factor of approx. 10 difference in their ages, these two clusters exhibit very similar dispersions in levels of stellar activity. We conclude that the low-mass stars in IC 2391 have arrived on the ZAMS with a wide range of coronal activity levels, from very strong to very weak, and that existing empirical activity-age scaling laws therefore cannot be valid.

    Description: We have used the Goddard High-Resolution Spectrograph (GHRS) on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) to search for chromospheric emission in the ultraviolet C II 1335 A lines of eight A-type stars. The B-V colors of these stars range from 0.12 to 0.22. We have detected emission in the spectrum of the A7 V star Altair, but in no other star. We present tentative evidence that the emission from Altair is blueshifted by approximately 60 km per sec or more with respect to the photospheric spectrum of this star. We interpret this as expansion and suggest that the base of the A star winds that we have proposed in earlier work may lie within the chromosphere. Together with International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) spectra, our observations indicate that in ordinary main-sequence stars the onset of convection zones capable of supporting detectable chromospheres occurs in the close vicinity of B-V = 0.22.

    Description: The aim of this observation was to take advantage of the large collecting area and sensitivity of the European Space Agency's XMM-Newton telescope to survey the X ray brightness of solar-mass stars in the 2 Gyr old NGC 752 cluster in order to chart out the dependence of coronal X ray emission of Sun like stars as a function of age. Dr. Simon's stated role as one of the co-investigators in the project was limited to assisting the project's European Principal Investigator with the analysis and interpretation of the X ray measurements, and to assist in summarizing the results for publication. The observation was executed successfully, and approximately 130 X ray sources were detected in the XMM field of view and subsequently measured to obtain X ray count rates. To date neither the measurements nor the raw data have been distributed by the European P.I. to the co-investigators, It is expected that the measurements will be distributed to the co-investigators by the end of 2004, and once that is done, the scientific analysis by Dr. Simon can then begin. At present, since the data and measurements have not been shared with the co-investigators, there are no results to report.

    Description: In the course of a long-running IUE Guest Observer program, UV spectral images were obtained for more than 60 late-type members of the Hyades Cluster in order to investigate their chromospheric emissions. The emission line fluxes extracted from those observations were used to study the dependence of stellar dynamo activity upon age and rotation (IUE Observations of Rapidly Rotating Low-Mass Stars in Young Clusters: The Relation between Chromospheric Activity and Rotation). However, the details of those measurements, including a tabulation of the line fluxes, were never published. The purpose of the investigation summarized here was to extract all of the existing Hyades long-wavelength Mg II spectra in the IUE public archives in order to survey UV chromospheric emission in the cluster, thereby providing a consistent dataset for statistical and correlative studies of the relationship between stellar dynamo activity, rotation, and age over a broad range in mass.

    Description: We have used the Roentgensatellit (ROSAT), the Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE), and the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) to measure X-ray and ultraviolet emissions of moderate-mass (APPROX. 2-3 solar mass) giants in the Hertzsprung gap (spectral types early F to mid-G) and the post-helium flash "clump" (approx. G8-K0). Our motivation was to document the evolution of hot coronae (T greater than 10(exp 6)K) along the post-main-sequence trajectories traveled by such stars in order to gain insight concerning the "X-ray deficiency" of the F-GO giants and the strong braking of stellar rotation at the red edge of the Hertzsprung gap. With few exceptions, Hertzsprung gap and clump giants observed by ROSAT PSPC show hot (T approx. 10(exp 7)K) coronal energy distributions, regardless of any X-ray deficiency, EUVE spectra of gap star 31 Com (G0 111) indicate a broad coronal emission measure hump at approx. 10(exp 7.2)K, while the active clump giant beta Ceti (K0 III) displays a sharp peak at approx. 10(exp 6.8)K, as seen previously in the mixed clump/gap binary Capella (alpha Aur: G8 III + G0 III). The gap giants upsilon Peg (F8 III) and 24 UMa (G4 III) have EUV emissions of intermediate temperature (approx. 10(exp 7.0)K). The stars 31 Com, psi(sup 3) Psc (G0 III), and beta Cet exhibit redshifted transition zone (TZ: approx. 10(exp 5)K) lines in HST GHRS spectra, as reported earlier in Procyon (alpha CMi: F5 IV-V) and Capella G0. Such redshifts on the Sun are thought to signify flows in magnetic loops. beta Cas (F2 III)-a rare soft coronal source among the gap stars-displays blueshifts of C iv and 0 iv], although emissions at cooler and hotter temperatures are near the photospheric velocity. The remarkably broad line profiles of the fastest rotating gap giants suggest that the 10(exp 5) K "subcoronal " emission zones extend to h approx. R(sub *) above the photosphere, about 50 scale heights. In contrast to the TZ line redshifts, the upper chromospheric emissions (e.g., Mg II and Si III) of 31 Com and upsilon(sup 3) Psc have blueshifted cores. Blue-asymmetric peaks in the solar Mg a lines are thought to indicate dynamical heating in the chromosphere. Observations of the H(sub I) Ly(alpha) feature of 31 Com taken 9 months apart reveal striking profile changes, reminiscent of those noted previously in the Ly(alpha) blue peak of the Capella G0 star. We used the far-ultraviolet diagnostics, in combination with ROSAT X-ray photometry and EUVE high-excitation line strengths, to constrain physical models of the stellar outer atmospheres. Quasi-static magnetic loops can simulate the empirical coronal emission measures of the giant stars, but the inferred pressures for sensible loop lengths conflict with direct measurements of subcoronal densities. Furthermore, the high rate of emission at approx. 10(exp 5) K cannot be explained by thermal conduction down the legs of hot quasi-static loops. On the other hand, the possible existence of elongated (l - R(sub *) emission structures on the gap giants leads to a speculative scenario to explain the X-ray deficiency. It is based on the increased importance of the dynamical filling phase ("explosive evaporation") of the loop life cycle; conductive cooling, yielding TZ emissions at the footpoints, when the heating is interrupted; and the possibility for transitions between " hot " and " cool " energy balance solutions owing to dynamical suspension and centrifugal trapping of the cooling gas. The long loops might represent a vestigial global " magnetosphere " inherited from the main-sequence phase, which ultimately is disrupted near approx. G0 by the deepening convective envelope and growth of a more solar-like dynamo. Coronal emissions might be boosted temporarily as the X-ray deficiency is removed but soon would be quenched by wind braking previously inhibited by the magnetospheric "dead zone."

    Description: DK UMa (= 24 UMa = HD 82210) is a G4 IV-III star. According to its M(sub v) and B - V color, it is located at the base of the red giant branch, having recently exited from the Hertzsprung Gap. Now poised to start its first ascent along the giant branch, DK UMa is at a significant juncture in its post-main-sequence evolution, offering an important evolutionary comparison for magnetic activity with stars like 31 Comae, which is just entering the Hertzsprung Gap, and older stars like the Hyades giants or P Ceti, which have passed the tip of the giant branch and lie in the so-called 'clump'. As part of a major survey of the ultraviolet and X ray properties of a well-defined sample of evolved giant stars, DK UMa was observed with the Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE) spacecraft in March 1997, for a total exposure time of 230 kiloseconds. A plot of the extracted short-wavelength (SW) spectrum of this star is shown, where it is compared with similar EUVE exposures for other yellow and red giant stars in the activity survey. In terms of the spectral lines of different ionization stages present in these spectra, the transition region and coronal temperature of DK UMa appears to be intermediate between those of 31 Com and P Ceti. Combining the relative strengths of the EUVE lines with Hubble Space Telescope (HST) data at near UV wavelengths and with ROSAT X-ray fluxes, the differential emission measure (DEM) distributions of these stars form a sequence in coronal temperature, which peaks at 10(exp 7.2) K for 31 Com, at 10(exp 6.8) K for B Ceti, and at intermediate temperatures for DK UMa - consistent with the evolutionary stages represented by the three stars. The integrated fluxes of the strongest emission lines found in the EUVE spectrum of DK UMa are listed, again compared with similar measurements for other giant stars that were observed in the course of other EUVE Guest Observer programs.
