Description: The analysis of concentration‐discharge (C‐Q) relationships from low‐frequency observations is commonly used to assess solute sources, mobilization, and reactive transport processes at the catchment scale. High‐frequency concentration measurements are increasingly available and offer additional insights into event‐scale export dynamics. However, only few studies have integrated inter‐annual and event‐scale C‐Q relationships. Here, we analyze high‐frequency measurements of specific conductance (EC), nitrate (NO3‐N) concentrations and spectral absorbance at 254 nm (SAC254, as a proxy for dissolved organic carbon) over a two year period for four neighboring catchments in Germany ranging from more pristine forested to agriculturally managed settings. We apply an integrated method that adds a hysteresis term to the established power law C‐Q model so that concentration intercept, C‐Q slope and hysteresis can be characterized simultaneously. We found that inter‐event variability in C‐Q hysteresis and slope were most pronounced for SAC254 in all catchments and for NO3‐N in forested catchments. SAC254 and NO3‐N event responses in the smallest forested catchment were closely coupled and explainable by antecedent conditions that hint to a common near‐stream source. In contrast, the event‐scale C‐Q patterns of EC in all catchments and of NO3‐N in the agricultural catchment without buffer zones around streams were less variable and similar to the inter‐annual C‐Q relationship indicating a homogeneity of mobilization processes over time. Event‐scale C‐Q analysis thus added key insights into catchment functioning whenever the inter‐annual C‐Q relationship contrasted with event‐scale responses. Analyzing long‐term and event‐scale behavior in one coherent framework helps to disentangle these scattered C‐Q patterns.
Description: Key Points: We compare event‐scale and inter‐annual concentration‐discharge relationships in four adjoined catchments with contrasting land use. The variability of event‐scale C‐Q relationships was shaped by land use and antecedent conditions for biogeochemically reactive but not for geogenic solutes. For biogeochemically reactive solutes, event‐scale C‐Q patterns can contrast the inter‐annual pattern obtained from all observations.

Description: A brief description of the morphology of lunar surface material returned by Luna 16 automatic lunar station is given. Adhesiveness of the surface material and its ability to be electrified is noted. Two main genetic groups of regolith particles are differentiated: primary, represented mainly by fragments of magmatic rocks of the basalt and gabbro types, as well as mineralized grains of their constituent minerals, and secondary, particles subjected to appreciable exogenic transformation on the surface of the Moon. The second group, representing more than 70 percent of the material in coarse fractions, includes particles of breccias, sintered aggregates of complex dendritic form, and glass and vitrified particles of varied composition.

Description: The regolith breccias from the Luna 24 core were analyzed. The Luna 24 regolith is a mixture of fine and coarse grain materials. The comparable analysis of the grain size distributions, the modal and chemical compositions of the breccias, and the regolith from the same levels show that the friable slightly litificated breccia with a friable fine grain matrix may be a source of fine grain material of the Luna 24 present day regolith.

Description: Lunar soils represent a cumulative product of space weathering and as such they exhibit distinct optical alteration. In comparison to the optical properties of similar rock powders, lunar soils are darker, have weaker diagnostic absorption bands, and exhibit a characteristic red continuum slope between 0.3 and 4.5 microns. Well-developed (mature) lunar soils have a mean grain size of about 60 microns and may contain more than 50 percent agglutinates (complex, glass-welded aggregates) which were previously believed to be the principal carriers of optical alteration resulting from space weathering. A detailed analysis of the spectral reflectance properties of the bulk soil, size separates, and agglutinate separates of several Apollo and Luna soils has been undertaken to evaluate the validity of the agglutinate paradigm for optical effects of space weathering. The data and results are summarized here which indicate that the finest fraction of natural lunar soils, rather than larger complex agglutinates, carries the principal effects of optical alteration. Bidirectional reflectance spectra were obtained using the small sample configuration of the RELAB facility, which accommodates 5-30 mg of material. Spectra are displayed with the labels for individual samples listed in order of brightness.

Description: A novel method for making p(+)-n diffused junction GaAs solar cells, with the formation of a diffusion source, an anti-reflective coating, and a protective cover glass in a single chemical-vapor deposition operation is discussed. Consideration is given to device fabrication and to solar-cell characteristics. The advantages of the technique are that the number of process steps is kept to an absolute minimum, the fabrication procedure is low-cost, and the GaAs surface is protected during the entire operation.

Description: The employment of area focal plane arrays (FPA) has made it possible to obtain second generation infrared imaging systems with high resolution and sensitivity. The Short Wavelength Infrared (SWIR) region (1-2.5 microns) is of importance for imaging objects at high temperature and under conditions of reflected sunlight. The present investigation is concerned with electrooptical characterization results for 32 x 32 SWIR detector arrays and FPAs which are suitable for use in a prototype imaging spectrometer. The employed detector material is Hg(1-x)Cd(x)Te grown by liquid phase epitaxy on a CdTe transparent substrate. Attention is given to details of processing, the design of the detector array, the multiplexer, the fabrication of the hybrid FPA, and aspects of performance.

Description: The photovoltaic characteristics of p(+)-n junction solar cells fabricated on bulk GaAs by an open tube diffusion technique are presented in detail. Quantum efficiency measurements were analyzed and compared to computer simulations of the cell structure in order to determine material parameters such as diffusion length, surface recombination velocity and junction depth. From the results obtained it is projected that proper optimization of the cell parameters can increase the efficiency of the cells to close to 20 percent.
