    Description: Spectra of several carbon stars in the two micron region are examined and compared with synthetic spectra from model atmospheres. Molecular hydrogen has been directly observed in carbon stars for the first time through the quadrupole 1-0 S(1) line at 4712.9/cm. It is definitely present in several Mira variables, and is definitely not present in several irregular variables and one Mira variable. A discrepancy between the predicted and observed line depths at different temperatures is shown. Resolution of the discrepancy by change of temperature alone would require an upward revision of the present effective temperature scale by at least 600 K. Several possible resolutions of the dilemma are briefly examined.

    Description: This paper reviews applications of IR techniques in stellar classification, studies of stellar photospheres, elemental and isotopic abundances, and the nature of remnant and ejected matter in near-circumstellar regions. Qualitative IR spectral classification of cool and hot stars is discussed, along with IR spectra of peculiar composite star systems and of obscured stars, and IR characteristics of stellar populations. The use of IR spectroscopy in theoretical modeling of stellar atmospheres is examined, IR indicators of stellar atmospheric composition are described, and contributions of IR spectroscopy to the study of stellar recycling of interstellar matter are summarized. The future of IR astronomy is also considered.

    Description: A review of echolocation mechanisms in marine mammals, chiefly porpoises, is given. Data cover peripheral auditory and central neurophysiological specializations favorable to the analysis of echolocating clicks and their echoes. Conclusions show (1) signals are received from 50 up to at least 135 kHz, (2) sound is received through the mandible skin, and (3) the midbrain sites are insensitive to low frequencies (below 6 kHz).

    Description: Interferometric observations in the atmospheric windows of the near infrared (1 to 4 microns) can be efficiently used to probe the chemical composition of Miras atmosphere and provide direct measurements of extended gas layers around these stars. This is illustrated by recent Miras observations carried out with the FLUOR instrument of the IOTA interferometer (Mennesson et al. 2002, and Perrin et al. proceedings of this conference) and with the PTI test-bed (Thompson 2002, Thompson et al. 2002). These visibility measurements show evidence for continuum emission from very extended ( 2-3 stellar radii) semi-transparent gaseous atmospheric layers, and large apparent diameter changes with pulsation phase. Interestingly these observations are consistent with the extended molecular gas layers (H20, CO ...) already inferred around some of these objects from IS0 and high resolution ground-based FTS infrared spectra.

    Description: Ten-micrometer spectra of the North Tropical Zone, North Equatorial Belt, and Great Red Spot at a spectral resolution of 1.1/cm are compared to synthetic spectra. These ground-based spectra were obtained simultaneously with the Voyager 1 encounter with Jupiter in March, 1979. The NH3 vertical distribution is found to decrease with altitude significantly faster than the saturated vapor pressure curve and is different for the three observed regions. Spatial variability in the NH3 mixing ratio could be caused by changes in the amount of NH3 condensation or in the degree of the NH3 photolysis. The C2H6 emission at 12 microns has approximately the same strength at the North Tropical Zone and North Equatorial Belt, but it is 30% weaker at the Great Red Spot. A cooler temperature inversion or a smaller abundance of C2H6 could explain the lower C2H6 emission over the Great Red Spot.

    Description: We present the first N-band nulling plus K- and L-band V(sup 2) observations of a young stellar object, MWC 325, taken with the 85 m baseline Keck Interferometer. The Keck nuller was designed for the study of faint dust signatures associated with debris disks, but it also has a unique capability for studying the temperature and density distribution of denser disks found around young stellar objects. Interferometric observations of MWC 325 at K, L, and N encompass a factor of five in spectral range and thus, especially when spectrally dispersed within each band, enable characterization of the structure of the inner disk regions where planets form. Fitting our observations with . geometric models such as a uniform disk or a Gaussian disk show that the apparent size increases 'monotonically with wavelength in the 2-12/Lm wavelength region, confirming the widely held assumption based on radiative transfer models, now with spatially resolved measurements over a broad wavelength range, that disks are extended with a temperature gradient. The effective size is a factor of about 1.4 and 2.2 larger in the L band and N band, respectively, compared to that in the K band. The existing interferometric measurements and the spectral energy distribution can be reproduced by a flat disk or a weakly shadowed nearly flat disk model, with only slight flaring in the outer regions of the disk, consisting of representative "sub-micron" (0.1 micron) and "micron" (2 micron) grains of a 50:50 ratio of silicate and graphite. This is in marked contrast io the disks previously found in other Herbig Ae/Be stars, suggesting a wide variety in the disk properties among Herbig Ae/Be stars.

    Description: Spectra of the central 5 in region of Jupiter in the 744 to 980 kayser spectral range are presented at 0.05 and 0.28 kayser resolution. The gases (N-14)H3, (N-15)H3, and PH3 are observed in absorption, and C2H2 and C2H6 observed in emission. A synthetic spectrum which included the opacity from the H2, (N-14)H3, (N-15)H3, and PH3 is compared with observations. It is concluded that: (1) the (N-14)H3 line profiles are best fitted with a NH3 density in the troposphere which is 0.5 times the saturated vapor pressure density and an opaque cloud at the 0.56 bar pressure level, (2) the best fit (N-15)H3/(N-14)H3 ratio is 0.006, (3) the PH3/H2 abundance ratios of NH3 and PH3 must be highly subsaturated above the tropopause or the temperature inversion is cooler than model predictions.

    Description: High-resolution spectra of the 1100-1200/cm region of the central part of Jupiter obtained in March 1980 and April 1981 are analyzed. The best fit NH3 distribution curve reveals a higher than solar mixing ratio, the abundance of NH3 to that of H2 being (3.3 + or - 1.7) x 10 to the -4th, below the 147 K layer (greater than 0.6 atmosphere). If NH3 ice particles are introduced as an opacity source, the NH3 mixing ratio below the 147 K layer can be lowered, but the fit is worse than that given by the model that excludes NH3 ice particles. The best fit PH3 distribution curve exhibits a PH3/H2 mixing ratio of (8.3 + or - 2.0) x 10 to the -7th in the troposphere. In addition, a CH4/H2 mixing ratio of (2.5 + or - 0.4) x 10 to the -3rd is found in the troposphere.
