    Description: Optical contacting as a method of joining the quartz components of the instruments for the Gravity Probe-B experiment is evaluated. The strength of the bond between optically contacted fused quartz surfaces at liquid helium temperature was investigated. A test apparatus which can be used for making measurements of the tensile strength of these bonds was designed. Results of the tensile pull tests are given and the reliability of such bonds analyzed.

    Description: The strength of the bond between optically contacted quartz surfaces was investigated. The Gravity Probe-B (GP-B) experiment to test the theories of general relativity requires extremely precise measurements. The quartz components of the instruments to make these measurements must be held together in a very stable unit. Optical contacting is suggested as a possible method of joining these components. The fundamental forces involved in optical contacting are reviewed and relates calculations of these forces to the results obtained in experiments.
