    Description: Actively produced intervals of time were found to increase in length and variability, whereas retrospectively produced intervals decreased in length although they also increased in variability with the addition of a variety of flight-related tasks. If pilots counted aloud while making a production, however, the impact of concurrent activity was minimized, at least for the moderately demanding primary tasks that were selected. The effects of feedback on estimation accuracy and consistency were greatly enhanced if a counting or tapping production technique was used. This compares with the minimal effect that feedback had when no overt timekeeping technique was used. Actively made verbal estimates of sessions filled with different activities performed during the interval were increased. Retrospectively made verbal estimates, however, increased in length as the amount and complexity of activities performed during the interval were increased.

    Description: The dependence of a spacecraft anomaly or event upon geophysical parameters established on the basis of statistical analysis is presented. Examples are provided for establishing relationships between events and parameters such as geomagnetic activity, local time, and events on other spacecraft. Examples illustrated the potential dangers of not using quantitative statistical techniques it was recommended that the data collection planning and statistical analysis planning be done together. Results demonstrate a high correlation between the events and the goephysical parameter being investigated.

    Description: A terminal area air traffic control simulation was designed to study ways of accommodating increased air traffic density. The concepts that were investigated assumed the availability of the microwave landing system and data link and included: (1) multiple curved descending final approaches; (2) parallel runways certified for independent and simultaneous operation under IFR conditions; (3) closer spacing between successive aircraft; and (4) a distributed management system between the air and ground. Three groups each consisting of three pilots and two air traffic controllers flew a combined total of 350 approaches. Piloted simulators were supplied with computer generated traffic situation displays and flight instruments. The controllers were supplied with a terminal area map and digital status information. Pilots and controllers also reported that the distributed management procedure was somewhat more safe and orderly than the centralized management procedure. Flying precision increased as the amount of turn required to intersect the outer mark decreased. Pilots reported that they preferred the alternative of multiple curved descending approaches with wider spacing between aircraft to closer spacing on single, straight in finals while controllers preferred the latter option. Both pilots and controllers felt that parallel runways are an acceptable way to accommodate increased traffic density safely and expeditiously.

    Description: Satellites at synchronous altitude exhibit unexplained behavior in the operation of electronic circuits and in the performance of thermal controls. A possible explanation for this behavior is the fact that satellites can be charged to large negative voltages by energetic electrons in the space environment. A space measurements program entitled SCATHA has been formulated to determine the characteristics of the charging process, to measure the response of the satellite when charging occurs, and to evaluate the utility of various corrective techniques which can minimize differential charging on the satellite. The instrumentation will measure charging levels and rates of twenty samples of satellite materials, some of which will be modified to prevent buildup of electrostatic charge. The electromagnetic interference background on the satellite will be measured for comparison with MIL STD 461, Electromagnetic Interference Characteristics Requirements for Equipment.
