Description: For segmented large mirrors to be used effectively for astronomy they must be actively aligned and controlled to extreme levels of precision. We consider the figure control problem for a spaceborne far-IR telescope, the Precision Segmented Reflector Project Focus Moderate Mission Telescope. We propose a two-stage approach. A figure initialization controller is used to achieve initial phasing and alignment of the telescope using an imaging science detector. A figure maintenance controller keeps the telescope aligned during normal operation using a laser metrology optical truss sensor system. We show that performance of any figure control system is subject to limits on the controllability of the wavefront. Maintenance controllers are additionally limited by considerations of the observability of the wavefront from the maintenance sensors. We show preliminary results for the figure initialization controller. We present a 'Wavefront Compensation' method for figure maintenance control that minimizes wavefront errors due to misalignment errors.

Description: The approach to the development of the Unified Information System (UNIS) to provide in a timely manner all the information required to manage, design, manufacture, integrate, test, launch, operate, and support the Advanced Launch System (NLS), as well as the current and planned capabilities are described. STESYM, the Space Transportation Main Engine (STME) development program, is comprised of a collection of data models which can be grouped into two primary models: the Engine Infrastructure Model (ENGIM) and the Engine Integrated Cast Model (ENGICOM). ENGIM is an end-to-end model of the infrastructure needed to perform the fabrication, assembly, and testing of the STEM program and its components. Together, UNIS and STESYM are to provide NLS managers and engineers with the ability to access various types and files of data quickly and use that data to assess the capabilities of the STEM program.

Description: Pegasus and the PegaStar integrated spacecraft bus are described, and an overview of integration and launch operations is provided. Payload design issues include payload volume and mass capability, payload interfaces, and design loads. Vehicle and payload processing issues include integration and handling methods, facilities, contamination control, and launch operations. It is noted that Pegasus provides small satellite users with a cost-effective means for delivering payloads into the specific orbits at the optimal time to meet the most demanding mission requirements. PegaStar provides a flexible cost-effective means for providing long-term on-orbit support while minimizing total program risk and cost.

Description: The NASA Center for Computational Sciences (NCCS) provides supercomputing and mass storage services to over 1200 Earth and space scientists. During the past two years, the mass storage system at the NCCS went through a great deal of changes both major and minor. Tape drives, silo control software, and the mass storage software itself were upgraded, and the mass storage platform was upgraded twice. Some of these upgrades were aimed at achieving year-2000 compliance, while others were simply upgrades to newer and better technologies. In this paper we will describe these upgrades.

Description: NASA has selected a preliminary payload for the earth observing system (Eos) program to be flown in the mid-to-late 1990s. This selection was based on the scientific guidance of various NASA Eos scientific advisory groups. The majority of the instruments have been assigned to two NASA-provided polar platforms. The payload for the NASA polar platforms consists of NASA research facility instruments, principal investigator instruments, and foreign-provided research facility instruments. The payload has been intentionally oversubscribed during the project definition phase, and will be down-selected before the execution phase begins. The measurements acquired by Eos will lead to a better understanding of the entire Earth system.

Description: Potato virus X (PVX) TGBp3 is required for virus cell-to-cell movement. Cell-to-cell movement of TGBp3 was studied using biolistic bombardment of plasmids expressing GFP:TGBp3. TGBp3 moves between cells in Nicotiana benthamiana, but requires TGBp1 to move in N. tabacum leaves. In tobacco leaves GFP:TGBp3 accumulated in a pattern resembling the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). To determine if the ER network is important for GFP:TGBp3 and for PVX cell-to-cell movement, a single mutation inhibiting membrane binding of TGBp3 was introduced into GFP:TGBp3 and into PVX. This mutation disrupted movement of GFP:TGBp3 and PVX. Brefeldin A, which disrupts the ER network, also inhibited GFP:TGBp3 movement in both Nicotiana species. Two deletion mutations, that do not affect membrane binding, hindered GFP:TGBp3 and PVX cell-to-cell movement. Plasmids expressing GFP:TGBp2 and GFP:TGBp3 were bombarded to several other PVX hosts and neither protein moved between adjacent cells. In most hosts, TGBp2 or TGBp3 cannot move cell-to-cell.

Description: A study of the products and reactions occurring during the chemical vapor deposition of silicon carbide from dimethyldichlorosilane in argon is presented. Reaction conditions were as follows: 700 to 1100 C, a contact time of about 1 min, and a pressure of 1 atm. At these conditions, the gases that formed were mainly methane, hydrogen, silicon tetrachloride, trichlorosilane, and methyltrichlorosilane. The silicon carbide solid that formed showed the presence of hydrogen and chloride as impurities, which might degrade the silicon carbide properties. These impurities were eliminated slowly, even at 1100 C, forming hydrogen, trichlorosilane, and silicon tetrachloride.

Description: Significant problems are faced by astronauts on orbit in the Space Station when trying to locate electrical faults in multi-segment avionics and communication cables. These problems necessitate the development of an automated portable device that will detect and locate cable faults using the pulse-echo technique known as Time Domain Reflectometry. A breadboard time domain reflectometer (TDR) circuit board was designed and developed at the NASA-JSC. The TDR board works in conjunction with a GRiD lap-top computer to automate the fault detection and isolation process. A software program was written to automatically display the nature and location of any possible faults. The breadboard system can isolate open circuit and short circuit faults within two feet in a typical space station cable configuration. Follow-on efforts planned for 1994 will produce a compact, portable prototype Space Station TDR capable of automated switching in multi-conductor cables for high fidelity evaluation. This device has many possible commercial applications, including commercial and military aircraft avionics, cable TV, telephone, communication, information and computer network systems. This paper describes the principle of time domain reflectometry and the methodology for on-orbit avionics utility distribution system repair, utilizing the newly developed device called the Space Station Time Domain Reflectometer (SSTDR).
