    Description: The full potential of state-of-the-art space radiation dose analysis for manned missions has not been exploited. Point doses have been overemphasized, and the critical dose to the bone marrow has been only crudely approximated, despite the existence of detailed man models and computer codes for dose integration in complex geometries. The method presented makes it practical to account for the geometrical detail of the astronaut as well as the vehicle. Discussed are the major assumptions involved and the concept of applying the results of detailed proton dose analysis to the real-time interpretation of on-board dosimetric measurements.

    Description: Six docking attempts were required to achieve initial latch engagement during the Apollo 14 translunar docking event. Although subsequent performance of the docking hardware was normal, the docking probe was retained for a thorough postflight investigation. Pertinent design details of the docking system, the mission events related to the anomaly, and a discussion of the postflight investigation of the cause of the anomaly are presented.

    Description: The objectives and results of several studies using the Canadian long baseline interferometry system (LBI) are presented. The precision of measurements from radio telescopes at the Algonquin Radio Observatory (ARO), Lake Traverse, Ontario; the Owens Valley Radio Observatory (OVRO), Big Pine, California; and the Chilbolton Observatory (CHIL), Chilbolton, England, is discussed. Also, since LBI is insensitive to the uncertainty in the geocentric gravitational constant, it is a very useful technique for determining the scales of the coordinate systems used by other precise techniques. Beginning in May 1977, a number of LBI observing sessions were accompanied by simultaneous satellite Doppler observations. The baseline components obtained from the satellite Doppler observations were compared to the LBI values. The weighted mean scale bias of the NSWC 9Z-2 satellite Doppler coordinate system relative to the LBI system was found to be 0.42 + or - 0.05 PPM. The weighted mean difference in the origin of longitude was found to be 0.87 sec + or - 0.01 while the difference in declination origin was found to be 0.06 sec + or - 0.01.

    Description: Results of measurements of the earth's rotation vector for a 400-day period from late September 1980 to December 1981, for which date from VLBI, satellite laser ranging (SLR), and lunar laser ranging (LLR) were available, are compared. The acquisition of the data and their evaluation are described. VLBI, SLR, and classical astrometric determinations of the X-parameter required to describe the location of the rotation pole on the earth's surface are shown, and VLBI, LLR, and classical astrometric determinations of the angle of rotation about this pole (UT1) are presented. The results indicate that VLBI and SLR, at their present stages of development, yield standard errors under 20 cm in the determinations of X, about twofold smaller than obtained from classical measurements, and that VLBI and LLR yield determination of UT1 with standard errors less than 40 cm, somewhat smaller than that of the corresponding determinations from classical observations. Methods for improving these types of intercomparisons are suggested.

    Description: Four astronomical measures of changes in the length of day obtained in 1979 have been shown to exhibit the same, approximately 50-day fluctuation. To find whether this fluctuation was persistent, and of meteorological origin, lunar laser ranging observations and wind data deduced from sources distributed over the globe were analyzed. A high degree of correlation was found between the two sets of data. It is implied that the 50-day period fluctuations in length of day are real and related to meteorological effects. Observed changes in length of day can provide a constraint for models for atmospheric flow, and a partial check for global analyses of such motions.

    Description: The decision to accomplish the lunar landing mission by use of the lunar orbit rendezvous technique required that a docking system be developed to allow: (1) spacecraft modules to be structurally joined, (2) intravehicular transfer of the crew and equipment, and (3) separation of the modules. The basic design criteria of the docking system, the evolution process, and the various docking concepts considered for the Apollo program are presented. Docking systems that were considered for the Apollo program included both impact and nonimpact systems; a probe and drogue impact system was selected. Physical and functional descriptions of the probe and drogue, the crew transfer tunnel, and docking ring latches are presented for both the early configuration and the present configuration as influenced by the development and qualification test programs. In addition, preflight checkout activity and mission performance of the system are discussed.
