Description: Absolute total electron-detachment cross sections and relative elastic-scattering cross sections are presented for collisions of H(-) or D(-) with He, Ne, Ar, and N2 for collision energies ranging from about 2 eV up to 100 eV. Special emphasis has been given to the effect of isotopic substitution. It was found that, with the exception of the helium target, the results cannot be in accord with a model using a localized complex potential. On the other hand, the results for H(-) or D(-) with He are in excellent agreement with predictions based on previous (local complex potential) analysis of differential elastic-scattering measurements.

Description: Experimental results are developed for the relative elastic differential scattering of He(++) by He for collision energies in the range 4 equal to or less than E equal to or less than 75 eV. In the analysis of the data, semiclassical considerations are utilized, assuming that the dynamics of the scattering is governed solely by the B and E states of He2(++). It is shown that existing ab initio calculations for the intermolecular potentials predict differential cross sections which are not in particularly good agreement with the experimental data.

Description: The applicability of the complex-potential theory to H(-)-He collisions is investigated. Measurements are conducted of the elastic differential cross section for H(-)-He collisions, taking into account energies in the range from 5 to 120 eV. A preliminary determination is made of the energy spectrum of detached electrons. The results are interpreted in terms of the complex-potential theory. The crossing point is determined together with the general shape of the HeH(-) potential curve.
