Description: The Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS) consists of synchronous-orbit satellites and a single ground station at White Sands, NM. Each TDRSS satellite has two 16-foot dish antennas with dual-frequency feeds for transmission and reception at S- and Ku-band. Autotracking is required on the Ku-band return link from user spacecraft. The TDRSS autotrack system was verified by computer simulation rather than by end-to-end hardware testing. One of the simulation models is described. Attention is given to an overview of system operation, a computer model description, and the simulation results. An example plot shows the sensitivity of system pointing error to user incidental amplitude modulation frequency.

Description: A cooling system and insulation concept for a Mach 5 cruise aircraft, using non-cryogenic fuel is presented. Catalytic endothermic reaction of petroleum fuel is used as the heat sink for engine cooling. A secondary closed-loop coolant circuit removes heat from the engine and transfers this heat to the catalytic reactor. Insulation on the engine flow path surfaces reduces the cooling requirements. A high temperature insulation system, which is capable of a surface temperature of 4,000 F, is used for the combustor and nozzle. A complete closed-loop cooling system design is shown in detail. Main features of this system include a fuel preheater, a catalytic fuel reactor, and engine wall cooling panels. A silicone-based liquid polymer, designed for extended use at 750 F, is used as the coolant. The preheater and reactor design are based on the results of recent experimental work. The cooling panels are designed using a thermal fluid analysis computer program, which was originally developed for the National Aero-Space Plane (NASP). Major components are analyzed structurally as well as thermally and weights are presented.

Description: A financial accounting model that incorporates physical and institutional uncertainties was developed for geothermal projects. Among the uncertainties it can handle are well depth, flow rate, fluid temperature, and permit and construction times. The outputs of the model are cumulative probability distributions of financial measures such as capital cost, levelized cost, and profit. These outputs are well suited for use in an investment decision incorporating risk. The model has the powerful feature that conditional probability distribution can be used to account for correlations among any of the input variables. The model has been applied to a geothermal reservoir at Heber, California, for a 45-MW binary electric plant. Under the assumptions made, the reservoir appears to be economically viable.

Description: A tool is presented to quantify the risks of geothermal projects, the Geothermal Probabilistic Cost Model (GPCM). The GPCM model was used to evaluate a geothermal reservoir for a binary-cycle electric plant at Heber, California. Three institutional aspects of the geothermal risk which can shift the risk among different agents was analyzed. The leasing of geothermal land, contracting between the producer and the user of the geothermal heat, and insurance against faulty performance were examined.

Description: The potential size of the onfarm-pumped irrigation market for solar thermal parabolic dish systems in seven high-insolation states is estimated. The study is restricted to the displacement of three specific fuels: gasoline, diesel and natural gas. The model was developed to estimate the optimal number of parabolic dish modules per farm based on the minimum cost mix of conventional and solar thermal energy required to meet irrigation needs. The study concludes that the potential market size for onfarm-pumped irrigation applications ranges from 101,000 modules when a 14 percent real discount rate is assumed to 220,000 modules when the real discount rate drops to 8 percent. Arizona, Kansas, Nebraska, New Mexico and Texas account for 98 percent of the total demand for this application, with the natural gas replacement market accounting for the largest segment (71 percent) of the total market.

Description: The Orbiter is in the final stages of preparation, proceeding toward mating with the other Shuttle flight hardware elements, preparatory to its maiden voyage. The first orbital vehicle, Columbia, has been undergoing manufacturing, modifications, and testing at KSC, and integrated vehicle processing is planned to continue prior to the planned STS-1 launch. In order to establish a national fleet of operational Orbiters, Space Shuttle production includes fabrication of two additional Orbiters, refurbishment of the Columbia after its use in the orbital flight test program and early operations, and conversion of the Orbiter structural test article to a flight operational Orbiter.
