    Description: The interaction of an electron beam (0 to 10 keV, 0 to 1.5 Amp) with the plasma and neutral atmospheres at 200 to 400 km altitude is studied with emphasis on applications to near Earth and cosmical plasmas. The interaction occurs in four space time regions: (1) near electron gun, beam coming into equilibrium with medium; (2) equilibrium propagation in ionosphere; (3) ahead of beam pulse, temporal and spatial precursors; (4) behind a beam pulse. While region 2 is of the greatest interest, it is essential to study Region 1 because it determines the characteristics of the beam as it enters 2 through 4.

    Description: A comprehensive set of video and photographic images of the aurora was acquired and analyzed from Spacelab 3. Since each pass of Spacelab covers several hours of local time during an elapsed time of only a few minutes, it was hoped that these images would provide additional insight into the local-time dependence of the auroral morphology. Spacelab 3 was launched on April 29, 1985 and auroral data were obtained during the period April 30 to May 5. Preparations made for the auroral experiment, the quality and quantity of the data obtained, the initial scientific results, and ideas for further inquiry suggested by the preliminary review of the data are discussed.

    Description: The first AMPTE artificial comet was observed with a low light level television camera operated aboard the NASA CV990 flying out of Moffett Field, California. The comet head, neutral cloud, and comet tail were all observed for four minutes with an unifiltered camera. Brief observations at T + 4 minutes through a 4554A Ba(+) filter confirmed the identification of the structures. The ion cloud expanded along with the neutral cloud at a rate of 2.3 km/sec (diameter) until it reached a final diameter of approx. 170 km at approx. T + 90 s. It also drifted with the neutral cloud until approx. 165 s. By T + 190 s it had reached a steady state velocity of 5.4 km/sec southward. A barium release in the magnetotail was observed from the CV990 in California, Eagle, Alaska, and Fairbanks, Alaska. Over a twenty-five minute period, the center of the barium streak drifted southward (approx. 500 m/sec), upward (24 km/sec) and eastward (approx 1 km/sec) in a nonrotating reference frame. An all-sky TV at Eagle showed a single auroral arc in the far North during this period.

    Description: A rocket launched from Poker Flat, Alaska, carried a new type of high-explosive barium shaped charge to 571 km, where detonation injected a thin disk of barium vapor with high velocity nearly perpendicular to the magnetic field. The TV images of the injection are spectacular, revealing three major regimes of expanding plasma which showed early instabilities in the neutral gas. The most unusual effect of the injection is a peculiar rayed barium-ion structure lying in the injection plane and centered on a 5 km 'black hole' surrounding the injection point. Preliminary electrostatic computer simulations show a similar rayed development.

    Description: A barium shaped charge, named Limerick, was released from a rocket launched from Poker Flat Research Range, Alaska, on March 30, 1982, at 1033 UT. The release took place in a small auroral breakup. The jet of ionized barium reached an altitude of 8100 km 14.5 min after release, indicating that there were no parallel electric fields below this altitude. At 8100 km the jet appeared to stop. Analysis shows that the barium at this altitude was effectively removed from the tip. It is concluded that the barium was actually accelerated upward, resulting in a large decrease in the line-of-sight density and hence the optical intensity. The parallel electric potential in the acceleration region must have been greater than 1 kV over an altitude interval of less than 200 km. The acceleration region, although presumably auroral in origin, did not seem to be related to individual auroral structures, but appeared to be a large-scale horizontal structure. The perpendicular electric field below, as deduced from the drift of the barium, was temporally and spatially very uniform and showed no variation related to individual auroral structures passing through.

    Description: Results of simultaneous observation of a fast wave event from the Ester Dome Observatory (EDO) near College, Alaska, the Poker Flat Rocket Launching Facility (PKR), and Fort Yukon, Alaska (FYU). The display occurred on Mar. 27, 1971, and the general morphology is described and discussed. It is suggested that fast auroral waves occur when a preceding substorm has enhanced the particle population in the region of the magnetosphere near L = 6 in the midnight sector; then transverse hydromagnetic waves, associated with the onset of further local substorm activity, become visible through their action on this enhanced particle population as they propagate inwards in the equatorial region.

    Description: A study was conducted to define the characteristics of a modular optical diagnostic system (OBIPS) for AMPS, to provide input to Phase B studies, and to give information useful for experiment planning and design of other instrumentation. The system described consists of visual and UV-band imagers and visual and UV-band photometers; of these the imagers are most important because of their ability to measure intensity as a function of two spatial dimensions and time with high resolution. The various subsystems of OBIPS are in themselves modular with modules having a high degree of interchangeability for versatility, economy, and redundancy.

    Description: Doppler-broadened Fabry-Perot fringes of weak (less than 1-kR) auroral forbidden O I 5577- and 6300-A emissions have been detected in real time (1/60 sec) with the aid of a low-light level image-orthicon TV camera coupled to a two-stage image intensifier. The imaging scheme permits static-mode operation of a Fabry-Perot interferometer. For maximum use of all the information contained in every TV frame, each circular fringe may be sectioned into several annuli, and the corresponding annuli from all rings are summed to yield an intensity value. This procedure for deriving a fringe profile requires a video digitizer coupled to a digital processing system and should provide fast real-time (1/60 sec) measurements of E- and F-region temperatures and winds. With forbidden O I 5577-A intensity of 750 R, visually prominent TV images of the Fabry-Perot fringes were recorded in 0.5 sec, and the temperature of the emitting region was determined from two percent of the total information in the TV image.
