Description: The International Gamma Ray Astrophysics Laboratory (INTEGRAL) mission is described with emphasis on the INTEGRAL core program. The progress made in the planning activities for the core program is reported on. The INTEGRAL mission has a nominal lifetime of two years with a five year extension option. The observing time will be divided between the core program (between 30 and 35 percent during the first two years) and general observations. The core program consists of three main elements: the deep survey of the Galactic plane in the central radian of the Galaxy; frequent scans of the Galactic plane in the search for transient sources, and pointed observations of several selected sources. The allocation of the observation time is detailed and the sensitivities of the observations are outlined.

Description: Beginning with exact relations between object and image coordinates for a single reflective surface, a systematic analysis of general grazing incidence systems is presented. A complete set of primary aberrations for single-element and two-element systems is developed. The importance of a judicious choice for a coordinate system in showing field curvature to be clearly the predominant aberration for a two-element system is discussed. The validity of the theory is verified through comparisons with the exact ray-trace results for the case of a telescope.

Description: AXAF is to be equipped with a high performance X-ray telescope for the conduction of detailed astrophysics research. The observatory is to be serviced by the Space Station or the Shuttle, depending on capabilities during the AXAF operational period. The AXAF is to utilize the wavelength band from 1.2 A to 120 A. Attention is given to the AXAF science team, the AXAF observatory characteristics, the AXAF science instrument definition program, the Advanced Charge Coupled Device (CCD) Imaging Spectrometer (ACIS), the High Resolution Camera (HRC), the Bragg Crystal Spectrometer (BCS), the X-ray Spectrometer (XRS), the transmission gratings, and the program schedule.

Description: The transient black hole candidate GRO J1655-40 was shown elsewhere to eject matter at apparently superluminal velocities. The oriented scintillation spectrometer experiment (OSSE) spectra, measured during the X-ray outbursts, are consistent with a single power law up to 600 keV, with no evidence of a high energy cutoff. The detection of the flaring behavior of this source up to 10 MeV was claimed elsewhere. The Compton telescope (COMPTEL) observations in the 0.75 to 30 MeV band of this source are analyzed. The upper limits on the time averaged emission are presented and gamma ray flares are searched for. It is concluded that the COMPTEL data can neither confirm nor refute the claimed detection of a large gamma ray flare from this source. The gamma ray flare search in five years' worth of data did not reveal evidence for the occurrence of strong flares on timescales of two days.

Description: The instrumentation planned for the Advanced X-ray Astrophysics Facility (AXAF), a space-based observation platform for the 1990s, is described. The AXAF will feature a grazing incidence telescope at the end of the observatory and four independently selected instruments at the other end, including: a CCD imaging spectrometer; a Bragg crystal spectrometer; and two transmission grating spectrometers located directly behind the telescope to detect first order spectral images. The instruments are currently in the definition phase to be followed by design and development starting in the late 1980s. A detailed schematic diagram of the Bragg crystal imaging spectrometer is provided.

Description: An exact expression relating the coordinates of a point on the incident ray, a point of reflection from an arbitrary surface, and a point on the reflected ray is derived. The exact relation is then specialized for the case of grazing incidence, and first order and third order systematic analyses are carried out for a single reflective surface and then for a combination of two surfaces. The third order treatment yields a complete set of primary aberrations for single element and two element systems. The importance of a judicious choice for a coordinate system in showing field curvature to clearly be the predominant aberration for a two element system is discussed. The validity of the theory is verified through comparisons with the exact ray trace results for the case of the telescope.
