    Description: The paper deals with high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy performed to study the extended source surrounding the giant elliptical galaxy, M87, in the Virgo cluster. From observations carried out with a focal plane crystal spectrometer, L-alpha emission was detected from hydrogenic oxygen (O VIII). Upper limits could be set on lines from intermediate ionization states of iron. The presence of a quantity of cooler matter surrounding M87 was revealed, which has important implications for cluster models and favors a radiatively controlled accretion mechanism.

    Description: Gravity Probe-B (GP-B), also known as the Stanford Relativity Gyroscope Experiment, will test two fundamental predictions of Einstein's General Theory of Relativity by precise measurement of the precessions of nearly perfect gyroscopes in earth orbit. This endeavor embodies state-of-the-art technologies in many fields, including gyroscope fabrication and readout, cryogenics, superconductivity, magnetic shielding, precision optics and alignment methods, and satellite control systems. These technologies are necessary to enable measurement of the predicted precession rates to the milliarcsecond/year level, and to reduce to 'near zero' all non-General Relativistic torques on the gyroscopes. This paper provides a brief overview of the experiment followed by descriptions of several specific hardware items with highlights on progress to date and plans for future development and tests.

    Description: An echelle spectrograph is described which is specifically designed for use on a 52-in. f/7.6 telescope as an instrument optimally suited for studying spectra of the faint optical counterparts to X-ray stars at moderate spectral resolution. The spectrograph is also able to accomodate a two-dimensional photon-tagging panoramic image detector so that high-time-resolution studies of the spectra of variable stars can be carried out. The equations for echelle spectrographs are summarized, and some features of the present instrument are discussed. These include its prism cross-disperser, small elliptical flat mirror, and unusually high efficiency. An iron-argon calibration spectrum obtained by pressing the film against the output fiber optics of a three-stage electrostatically focused image intensifier, a spectrum of P Cygni taken by placing the film directly in the image plane of the spectrograph, and a photon-counted image of a small section of an echellogram produced during an observation of the Ring nebula in Lyra are provided to illustrate the performance of the instrument.

    Description: The Photicon is a novel imaging optical detector utilizing a conventional semitransparent photocathode, imaging electrostatic optics, microchannel plates, and a crossed-wire-grid position-sensitive charge detector. Its sensitivity to single optical photons over a two-dimensional area, high-resolution imaging, and timing capability render it useful for recording scintillations from X-ray image converters in X-ray astronomy. A digital word indicating the position of a single photon event is produced; the image can be stored in an array or serially. Spatial resolution to 20 microns in a 25 mm diam active area detector is reported, and modifications to achieve a spectral range of 120-730 nm are mentioned.

    Description: Coordinated X ray, optical, and radio observations of the flare star YZ CMi are reported. Twenty-two minor optical flares and twelve radio events were recorded. No major optical flares, greater than 3 magnitudes, were observed. Although no flare related X ray emission was observed, the measured upper limits in this band enable meaningful comparisons with published flare star models. Three of the five models predicting the relative X ray to optical or radio flare luminosities are in serious disagreement with the observations. For the largest optical flare with coincident X ray coverage, the 3 sigma upper limit on X ray emission in the 0.15 to 0.8 keV band is 8.7 x 10 to the 28th power erg/s, corresponding to a ratio of X ray to B-band luminosity of less than 0.3. Based on the present results, the contribution of the flares UV Ceti flare stars to the galactic component of the diffuse soft X ray background is less than 0.2 percent.

    Description: A description is presented of the results of tests on an X-ray photomultiplier containing a negative electron affinity (NEA) photocathode. This device makes it possible to investigate the response of the NEA photocathode to X-rays of various energies. The obtained data provide a basis for the determination of the photoelectron yield and energy resolution of the considered photocathode as a function of energy in the range from 0.8 to 3 keV. The investigation demonstrates the feasibility of using an NEA III-V photocathode for the detection of soft X-rays.

    Description: The Gravity-Probe-B relativity gyroscope experiment (GP-B) will measure the geodetic and frame-dragging precession rates of gyroscopes in a 650 km high polar orbit about the earth. The goal is to measure these two effects, which are predicted by Einstein's General Theory of Relativity, to 0.01 percent (geodetic) and 1 percent (frame-dragging). This paper presents the development progress for full-size prototype flight hardware including the gyroscopes, gyro readout and magnetic shielding system, and an integrated ground test instrument.

    Description: The Focal Plane Crystal Spectrometer on HEAO-B is a moderate to high resolution, curved-crystal, Bragg spectrometer which operates behind a grazing incidence X-ray telescope. It is designed to allow detailed spectral studies of both point and extended celestial X-ray sources in the energy range 0.2-3.3 keV, with resolutions of 50 to 1000. The analyzing elements are six torroidal diffractors, and the detectors are position-sensitive, flow, proportional counters. HEAO-B is scheduled for launch in June, 1978.
