    Description: Radio propagation measurements represent a powerful means for remote probing of electron density and solar wind speed in the acceleration region of the solar wind not yet explored by in situ measurements. Recent investigations based on radio propagation measurements have led to considerable progress in our knowledge of the general morphology of solar wind fluctuations and structure, especially in terms of their relationship to solar wind properties that have been observed directly by fields and particles measurements, and to coronal features observed in white-light measurements. The purpose of this paper is to present an overview of the latest results on quasi-stationary structure covering the large scale variation of solar wind speed over the streamer belt and coronal hole regions, coronal streamers (source of slow solar wind) and their associated small-scale electron density structure, plumes, density and fractional or relative density fluctuations, and the spectral characteristics of the electron density fluctuations. The radio propagation measurements not only reveal new information on the structure near the Sun, but also show that the structure appears to undergo substantial evolution on its way to 0.3 AU, the closest radial distance for which direct in situ spacecraft measurements are available.

    Description: New remote-sensing observations are reported of the solar wind motion within about 30 earth radii. Use is made of the interplanetary scintillation (IPS) spaced receiver technique with the radio source being a spacecraft signal (rather than a natural radio source as in previous spaced receiver studies). The spacecraft used are Helios A and B and the Viking orbiters. The purposes of the study are (1) to augment the scarce estimates of solar wind bulk flow speed near the sun and in the ecliptic with measurements made using spacecraft signals, and (2) to estimate random velocity components and identify the region where the random velocity is a significant fraction of the mean velocity. In addition, the radial evolution of speed and random velocity is compared with that of the plasma density fluctuation spectrum. Also reported are the first accurately normalized IPS scintillation index measurements using a monochromatic point source.

    Description: It is shown that path-integrated radio-scattering measurements of the solar wind velocity yield higher estimates than those of point measurements. The post-shock speed is determined from radio scattering measurements by selection of the maximum of the radio-scattering deduced from the velocity-time curve, whereas velocity points on the rising edge of the shock underestimate the post-shock gas velocity, and therefore the shock speed. However, it is suggested that large uncertainties reside in using radio techniques for measurements of parameters of the shock wave, and the uncertainties may be large enough to encompass the lower velocity values calculated by a point method of measurement.

    Description: The measurement of spacecraft phase scintillations with a coherent dual-frequency radio system permits solar-wind velocity measurements based on multiple-station phase scintillations. Advantages of measuring solar-wind velocity on the basis of multiple-station phase scintillations are discussed with respect to amplitude scintillations. These advantages include the ability to carry out observations closer to the sun, a much wider range of possible baselines, a lower S/N ratio for long-baseline phase measurements, and a wider range of antenna sizes and receiver noise temperatures. NASA antennas particularly suitable for these measurements are identified, and observations with the coherent S/X radio system aboard various NASA spacecraft intended for deep-space missions are proposed.

    Description: The multiple scattering calculations of rain effects are studied on the basis of calculating the incoherent intensity at 30, 60, 90, and 120 GHz. The Mie solution and the Laws-Parsons distribution are used to determine scattering and absorption characteristics. The equation of transfer and the Stokes parameters are used to determine incoherent intensities for the horizontal and vertical polarizations. The ratio of the copolarized incoherent intensity to the copolarized coherent intensity is defined as the incoherent copolarized discrimination. The ratio of the cross-polarized incoherent intensity is defined as the incoherent cross-polarized discrimination. These ratios are calculated in terms of copolarized attenuation, rain rate, and field of view. The results show that multiple scattering effects may become significant during heavy rains.
