    Description: Previous methods to segment clouds from ocean in AVHRR imagery have shown varying degrees of success, with nighttime approaches being the most limited. An improved method of automatic image segmentation, the principal component transformation split-and-merge clustering (PCTSMC) algorithm, is presented and applied to cloud screening of both nighttime and daytime AVHRR data. The method combines spectral differencing, the principal component transformation, and split-and-merge clustering to sample objectively the natural classes in the data. This segmentation method is then augmented by supervised classification techniques to screen clouds from the imagery. Comparisons with other nighttime methods demonstrate its improved capability in this application. The sensitivity of the method to clustering parameters is presented; the results show that the method is insensitive to the split-and-merge thresholds.

    Description: Below is the 1st year progress report for NAG5-13435 "New Retrieval Algorithms for Geophysical Products from GLI and MODIS Data". Activity on this project has been coordinated with our NASA DB project NAG5-9604. For your convenience, this report has six sections and an Appendix. Sections I - III discuss specific activities undertaken during the past year to analyze/use MODIS data. Section IV formally states our intention to no longer pursue any research using JAXA's (formerly NASDA's) GLI instrument which catastrophically failed very early after launch (also see the Appendix). Section V provides some indications of directions for second year activities based on our January 2004 telephone discussions and email exchanges. A brief summary is given in Section VI.

    Description: Historically, locating and browsing satellite data has been a cumbersome and expensive process. This has impeded the efficient and effective use of satellite data in the geosciences. SSABLE is a new interactive tool for the archive, browse, order, and distribution of satellite date based upon X Window, high bandwidth networks, and digital image rendering techniques. SSABLE provides for automatically constructing relational database queries to archived image datasets based on time, data, geographical location, and other selection criteria. SSABLE also provides a visual representation of the selected archived data for viewing on the user's X terminal. SSABLE is a near real-time system; for example, data are added to SSABLE's database within 10 min after capture. SSABLE is network and machine independent; it will run identically on any machine which satisfies the following three requirements: 1) has a bitmapped display (monochrome or greater); 2) is running the X Window system; and 3) is on a network directly reachable by the SSABLE system. SSABLE has been evaluated at over 100 international sites. Network response time in the United States and Canada varies between 4 and 7 s for browse image updates; reported transmission times to Europe and Australia typically are 20-25 s.

    Description: The primary objectives of the Geostationary Meteorological Satellite (GMS)-5 Pathfinder Project were the following: (1) to evaluate GMS-5 data for sources of error and develop methods for minimizing any such errors in GMS-5 data; (2) to prepare a GMS-5 Pathfinder data set for the GMS-5 Pathfinder Benchmark Period (1 July 95 - 30 June 96); and (3) show the usefulness of the improved Pathfinder data set in at least one geophysical application. All objectives were met.

    Description: The biological effects on three different time scales (100-day mesoscale, annual, and several-year) of a mesoscale anticyclonic eddy consistently found in shipboard surveys and satellite-sensed data several hundred kilometers southwest of Point Conception, CA, are described. A detailed shipboard study of the eddy in January 1981 found a complex system of fronts in surface chlorophyll at the northern edge of the eddy; microplankton and zooplankton distributions were strongly affected by entrainment processes at the surface and, apparently, at depth. Concurrent satellite coastal zone color scanner ocean color images show agreement with the general surface characteristics of the eddy chlorophyll field but do not reflect features deeper than about 25 m, including the contribution of the deep chlorophyll maximum to the integrated chlorophyll values. Satellite data for the period October 1980 through October 1981 and shipboard data from California Cooperative Oceanic Fisheries Investigations (CalCOFI) for December 1980 to July 1981 show the continued presence of the eddy in the sea surface temperature and color field and in the distributions of surface chlorophyll and zooplankton displacement volume. A review of the CalCOFI survey results from 1949 to the present time demonstrates the recurrent nature of the eddy system on a year-to-year basis. The eddy system appears to have a significant effect on the distribution of both oceanic and nearshore organisms. Offshore transport of coastal species occurs in the form of large entrained plumes or filaments.

    Description: The temperature-plant pigment-optical structure of a mesoscale anticyclonic eddy consistently found in shipboard surveys and satellite-sensed data several hundred kilometers southwest of Point Conception, CA, is described on three different time scales (100-day mesoscale, annual, and several-year). The satellite coastal zone color scanner (CZCS) ocean color imagery detected the near-surface chlorophyll structure of the eddy, but in situ optical and plant pigment data suggest that such imagery does not provide a good estimate of the integrated chlorophyll field of the eddy. The temperature and plant pigment boundaries of the eddy, as determined from two-dimensional gradients of advanced very high resolution radiometer (AVHRR) and CZCS imagery, do not coincide spatially. This and in situ temperature, plant pigment, and optical structure provide additional evidence that some eddy systems in the California Current are not isolated vortex systems but rather continuously entrain waters of nonlocal origin laterally into their upper layers. Within the California Current a ratio of AVHRR/CZCS data is useful for separating inshore from oceanic water masses and following their surface entrainment by offshore vortices. The historical 28-year California Cooperative Oceanic Fisheries Investigations data for the Point Conception region of the California Current and remotely sensed data over this region show that the Point Conception eddy is a recurrent feature in the offshore California Current. Moreover, the available data provide evidence that a large number of warm-core mesoscale eddies occur simultaneously in a transition zone between coastal and oceanic regimes, that these features recur at preferred locations within the transition zone, and that this family of eddies should impose a significant offshore boundary condition on the flow of the California Current.

    Description: Polygon-fill operations and morphological transformations are effective computational tools for the land-masking and coastline-correction preprocessing operations often applied to AVHRR data prior to oceanographic applications. These masking operations, in conjunction with cloud-screening techniques, can be used on such other oceanographically significant remote-sensing data as those of the Coastal Zone Color Scanner, GOES, and Landsat. The sensitivity of the methods to regional variations in atmospheric conditions and land-ocean temperature gradients is assessed for tropical, midlatitude, and high latitude regions.
