Notes: The effect of counter-rotating streamwise steady vortices on three-dimensional Tollmien–Schlichting (TS) waves in a growing boundary layer on a concavely curved surface has been studied by using the method of multiple scales. The nonlinear evolution of the amplitudes with streamwise position has been obtained analytically. It is shown that the TS waves are amplified by the presence of streamwise vortices. The effect of combination resonance between TS waves and Goertler vortices is much more pronounced than the effect of parametric resonance between the TS waves and the periodic basic flow. The amplification rates increase with Goertler number and spanwise wavenumber.

Notes: Abstract The effect of suspended particles in a finitely conducting gas on the thermal convection instability is studied. The critical Rayleigh number at which instability sets in is reduced by the presence of suspended particles. The effect of vertical magnetic field is stabilizing. We also study the effect of conducting particles suspended in a non-conducting gas. It is found that the stabilizing effect of the magnetic field is reduced by the electrically conducting suspended particles.

Notes: Abstract The instability of an inhomogeneous arbitrary-β plasma occurring due to the transverse velocity shear, has been studied to analyse the effects of collisional thermal transfer. The dissipation of hydromagnetic waves in such a plasma has also been discussed. It has been found that the thermal forces modify the instability criteria in several limiting cases. Numerical solutions have also been obtained to investigate the effects of various physical parameters for a non-isothermal plasma with different adiabticity of two species, viz., electrons and ions.

Notes: Abstract The effect of the Coriolis force on the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability has been investigated, in which basic velocities of fluid are varying slowly with lateral coordinatey. The problem is solved by J.W.K.B. approximation method. Parabolic and other types of profiles for wide long channel flow have also been studied in detail.

Notes: Abstract Nonlinear analysis for Kelvin-Helmholtz instability of an incompressible, inviscid, rotating fluid with infinite conductivity in the presence of gravity and surface tension has been discussed. The unperturbed magnetic field on two sides of the interface is taken to be uniform. The nonlinear Schrödinger equation for the time variation of amplitude of small perturbations with wave number around the neutral stability is derived. It is found that stability of a magnetised K-H rotating configuration depends on the density ratio, surface tension, and discontinuity of velocity and magnetic field. The effect of an aligned magnetic field and rotation on the non-linear instability of a rotating conducting plasma has been discussed in certain important limiting cases.

Notes: Abstract We have studied the dynamical properties of convective overstability and Kelvin-Helmholtz instability in a vertical magnetic field with a downdraft. The Kelvin-Helmholtz instability and overstability produce the upward downward propagating Alfvén waves depending upon the magnitudes of the kinematic viscosity coefficient (eddy viscosity) ν, and thermometric conductivity κ. It is found that the instability may be driven by the density stratification and the effect of the eddy viscosity is to make the system stable. We discuss also the interaction of the overstability inx〈0 and the downdraft inx〉0, and the overstability at a vertical boundary of the field.

Notes: Abstract The problem of thermal convection instability of a horizontal layer of magnetized fluid has been studied to occur crystal growing under the effect of horizontal temperature gradient. In the study, the problem has been reduced to an eigen-value problem for a stream function. The dispersion relations for low viscosity fluid and high viscosity fluid respectively have been discussed analytically and some numerical results have been obtained. It is shown that the critical Rayleigh number and other its related constants for low viscosity fluid (i.e., mercury) are much differ than the high viscosity fluid (i.e., glycerol).

Notes: Abstract The investigation of instabilities adopting the point of view of inhomogeneous mass flow, physically corresponds to consideration of stability of the perturbations whose wavelengths in the direction of plasma inhomogeneities are much larger than the characteristic plasma scale length. The dissipation of hydromagnetic-waves and instabilities takes place due to the inhomogeneous plasma flow. Both the velocity and plasma density vary in the direction perpendicular to the magnetic field. It is found that the Alfvén wave branch and magnetosonic branch may be driven unstable by the velocity shear. Instability, oscillatory modes, marginal instability and overstability are worked out.

Notes: Abstract The thermal convection instability of a two component fluid layer subjected to a temperature gradient has been studied in the presence of an applied magnetic field. The associated thermal diffusion separation has a predominant effect even when the separations are small. Solutions for the non-oscillatory marginal states have been obtained. It is shown that the concentration gradient has a stabiliting or destabilizing effect according as ΔT〈or〉0. Approximate solutions for the oscillatory solutions have been obtained by the method of variational principle and the dispersion relation has been solved numerically.

Notes: Abstract The occurrence of oscillatory mode for magnetized fluid in the presence of vertical and horizontal temperature gradients has been studied. In both the cases (highly viscous and low-viscosity fluids) the occurrence of oscillatory solutions to the Bénard problem has been investigated as a function of Prandtl number, magnetic number, resistivity number and the ratio of applied temperature gradients. It is clear that the high Prandtl numbers completely change the character of instability and of the solutions as compared to those appropriate for low Prandtl-number fluids. It has also been shown that small horizontal temperature gradient readily generate oscillatory modes only for real frequencies. The critical Rayleigh number is higher than the critical Rayleigh number of non-magnetized fluid in both the cases-i.e., highly viscous fluid and one of moderate viscosity.
