Notes: A steady-state model for the resistivity of composites is presented, based on the idea that the resistance through a composite is the result of a series of a large number of resistors combined in series and parallel. There are three separate contributions to the resistance: constriction resistance at the contacts, tunneling resistance at the contacts, and the intrinsic filler resistance through each particle, with tunneling resistance generally dominating the magnitude of the overall resistance. The model predicts resistivity increases with increasing filler hardness and/or elastic modulus and insulating film thickness, while resistivity decreases with increasing particle size and intrinsic stress. The room-temperature dc resistivity behavior of conductor-filled silicone rubber composites was investigated to verify the model. Comparison of the model to this experimental data showed that good agreement could be obtained for filler materials in which the tarnish layer was a known quantity for a given powder; for other cases, the experimental values were higher than predicted.

Notes: Nickel zinc ferrites have been very widely used in the high-frequency applications. In our present study we have prepared Ni1−x Znx Fe2O4 (0≤x≤1) using novel hydrazinium metal hydrazinecarboxylate precursors. High densities (∼99%) have been obtained for all the ferrites sintered at relatively low temperatures, 1100 °C, in comparison with the conventional method (≥1200 °C). The variation of magnetic properties like magnetic moment, Curie temperature, and permeability with zinc concentration have been studied.

Notes: Gadolinium molybdate was twinned by irradiating the crystals for a few seconds with a 10.6 μm CO2 laser. Slit-shaped regions were irradiated to produce localized heating, thereby setting up suitably oriented thermal stresses of sufficient size to induce mechanical twinning. Ferroelastic twin patterns are difficult to control by this method because the required slit orientations are not parallel to domain-wall directions.

Notes: This paper is a review of the symmetry and connectivity of composite materials with particular emphasis on the effect that these have on composite properties. Analogies are drawn between composites and crystal structures to demonstrate the similarities between microscopic and macroscopic connectivity. A notation for composite transitions which can be used to describe changes in symmetry and connectivity is also presented.

Notes: Single crystals of Pb3GeO5 were grown from the melt by the Czochralski technique. Based on observations of the domain structure under mechanical stress, and the presence of an SHG signal, the crystals are ferroelastic and possibly ferroelectric, but show no phase transitions up to the melting point (738°C). The powder pattern was indexed on a monoclinic unit cell: a= 5.235±0.006 b = 5.244± 0.007, c = 5.45± 0.01 Å, β = 92°39′ + 6′, Z= 1. Intensity calculations suggest a close relation to the tetragonal Cd3SiO5 structure.

Notes: Absolute assignment of the atomic planes of Li2GeO3 and LiGaO2 is made by ion surface scattering (ISS) and the crystallographic polarity is defined. Pyroelectric coefficients p3 and the piezoelectric constants d33 of lithium metagermanate and lithium gallate are determined. Pyroelectric and piezoelectric coefficient signs when defined on the crystallographic sign convention of the axes are negative and positive, respectively. The results are correlated with chemical etching studies.

Notes: One of the qualities that distinguishes living systems from inanimate matter is the ability to adapt to changes in the environment. Smart materials have the ability to perform both sensing and actuating functions and are, therefore, capable of imitating this rudimentary aspect of life. Four of the most widely used smart materials are piezoelectric Pb(Zr, Ti)O3, electrostrictive Pb(Mg, Nb)O3, magnetostrictive (Tb, Dy)Fe2 and the shape-memory alloy NiTi. All four are ferroic with active domain walls and two phase transformations, which help to tune the properties of these actuator materials. Pb(Zr, Ti)O3 is a ferroelectric ceramic which is cubic at high temperature and becomes ferroelectric on cooling through the Curie temperature. At room temperature, it is poised on a rhombohedral–tetragonal phase boundary which enhances the piezoelectric coefficients. Terfenol, (Tb, Dy)Fe2, is also cubic at high temperature and then becomes magnetic on cooling through its Curie temperature. At room temperature, it too is poised on a rhombohedral–tetragonal transition which enhances its magnetostriction coefficients. Pb(Mg, Nb)O3 and nitinol (NiTi) are also cubic at high temperatures and on annealing transform to a partially ordered state. On further cooling, Pb(Mg, Nb)O3 passes through a diffuse phase transformation at room temperature where it exhibits very large dielectric and electrostrictive coefficients. Just below room temperature, it transforms to a ferroelectric rhombohedral phase. The partially ordered shape-memory alloy NiTi undergoes an austenitic (cubic) to martensitic (monoclinic) phase change just above room temperature. It is easily deformed in the martensitic state but recovers its original shape when reheated to austenite. The structural similarities between these four superb actuator materials are remarkable, and provide a key to the development of future smart materials.
