Notes:
A system is described to produce rapidly solidified ribbons of high-purity aluminum doped with controlled amounts of impurities. The system levitation melts the aluminum and drops the liquid onto twin copper rolls under vacuum or a controlled gas atmosphere. By avoiding a crucible for melting and a ceramic orifice for collimating the melt, contamination by low levels of impurities is eliminated. The cooling rate for this method of solidification is estimated to be similar to that of gas atomization and the ribbons formed are suitable for direct mechanical property testing and microstructural characterization.
