    Description: This study showed that large prefabricated units and concrete rubble patch reefs, placed as artificial marine habitats on sand bottom, greatly enhance the abundance, diversity, and biomass of fish in an area. Densities of individuals and biomass were found considerably higher at artificial reefs than at nearby, natural, bank reefs, a result consistent with other studies. Location, depth, and vertical profile are important factors determining fish assemblages at artificial habitats in the Keys. Fishes were both produced at artificial reefs and attracted from the surrounding area. Fish assemblages at the Hawk Channel artificial reefs were considerably different from those on the offshore reef tract, particularly in terms of dominant species. Rescue of the original 1992 work in 2005 was funded by the South Florida Ecosystem Restoration Prediction and Modeling Program.

    Description: Management programs that address scarringof seagrasses should be based on an approach thatinvolves (1) education, (2) channel marking,(3) increased enforcement, and (4) limited-motoringzones. Aerial monitoring and photography ofthe managed area are essential in evaluating theeffectiveness of a program. Management programsthat use this multifaceted approach have beeninstituted by a few local governments and at severalstate parks. Initial results of the programsindicate that in some areas seagrass scarring hasbeen reduced but that in other areas emphasis mayneed to be increased on one or more of the componentsof the four-point approach. A statewidemanagement plan is needed to address the mostegregious scarring over large areas that may bedifficult to regulate at the local-government level.

    Notes: We report on the use of the scanning tunneling microscope (STM) for etching both single crystal and thin film, YBa2Cu3O7−x. Nanoscale features can be generated with the STM by ablation of atoms rastered by the microscope tip. The etching process can be controlled to remove layers of material which are multiples of the c axis (12 A(ring)). Various geometric features have been fabricated ranging from fine lines to square etch pits. The STM has also been used to study the growth mechanism and surface topography of thin films of YBa2Cu3O7−x produced by in situ laser deposition (Jc typically 1×106 A cm−2 at 77 K). Step features equal to the c axis of the material can be readily identified which form pinnacles or chip like morphologies at the surface. These surfaces can also be etched with the STM to reveal a more continuous substructure consistent with the high Jc's observed.

    Notes: We present a crossed beam study of the major reactive channels of C++C2H6 in the collision energy range between 0.8 and 1.6 eV. We find that C2H+5 formation proceeds as a direct hydride abstraction reaction with the accompanying CH product scattered in the forward hemisphere. The product recoil energy distribution shows a distinct Gaussian shape that we correlate with the nature of the potential energy surface for transfer of the light hydride ion between two heavy species. C2H+3 formation occurs through two pathways: the first and most important route is direct interaction of C+ with C2H6 to form a new C–C bond with the ejection of CH3 in a collinear interaction that leads to backward scattering of the ionic product. A second, and much less probable pathway involves formation of this product through a transient collision complex living a significant fraction of a rotational period. The condensation product C3H+3 is by far the most abundant C3 product observed in this collision energy range. The sideways-peaked angular distribution for its formation is consistent with a mechanism where the initially formed C3H+6 complex decays in a step in which a molecule of H2 is ejected in a direction perpendicular to the plane of rotation defined by the three carbon atoms. The kinetic energy distribution for this channel is significantly broader than the predictions of statistical phase space theory and underscores the importance of potential energy exit channel barriers in determining product recoil in such elimination processes. We discuss these results in the context of a schematic potential energy surface incorporating thermochemical data and results of ab initio calculations.

    Notes: A study of the decomposition of poly-(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) by pulsed UV laser ablation in the incubation regime is presented here. We propose that incubation proceeds via the photoinduced formation of defects centers; while ablation following incubation, at subthreshold fluences, is a thermally driven phenomena. The light scattering data, in the incubation regime, is consistent with molecular weight reduction via backbone cleavage. The defect centers, C(Double Bond)C at chain ends following backbone cleavage, increase the UV absorption coefficient thereby lowering the ablation threshold. Similarities between the mass spectra of ablative PMMA following incubation and pyrolysis suggest that ablation following incubation is thermally driven. The implications of these results in an extensive and contradictory body of available data are discussed. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Protection of intellectual property embedded in self-replicating biological innovations, such as genetically modified seed, presents two problems for the innovator: the need for copy protection of intellectual property and price competition between new seed and reproduced seed. We consider three regimes in two periods with asymmetric information: short-term contracts, biotechnological protection, and long-term contracts. We find that piracy imposes more intense competition for seed sales than does durability alone. Technology protection systems yield highest firm profit and long-term contracts outperform short-term contracts. Farmers prefer, in order, long-term, short-term, and biotechnical protection. Depending on monitoring cost, long-term contracts may be socially preferred to short-term contracts, with both preferred to biotechnical protection.
