Notes: Summary The pattern of palaeomagnetic curves with particular regard to the lower Palaeozoic epochs which was revised by a suitable choice of polarity of data for the individual continents is given. The investigated distribution of the continental blocks for the individual geological epochs agrees with all the palaeontological and geological facts. The comparison of the model of continental drift with the occurrence of orogenic events and some palaeontological conclusions was carried out.

Notes: Summary Properties of the thermoremanent magnetization of various archaeological materials (baked-clay objects, samples from old trees, bones and stones) were investigated with the purpose to assess the possibility of their use for the determination of the earth's magnetic field in the historical past and to apply the data for solving some practical problems. It turns out that most of those materials yield magnetic values that can be used for making the radiocarbon dating method more accurate, for determining the degree of burning and for direct archaeomagnetic dating. The new conclusions also contribute to the knowledge of changes in the earth's magnetic field in the past.

Notes: Summary Apart from a brief account of the theories of the geomagnetic field and from suggestions of obtaining new data, the present work contains an analysis of the results of investigations into continental Quaternary sediments, which have become the object of close palaeomagnetic studies in Czechoslovakia in recent years. Besides sea sediments they represent one of the few possibilities of obtaining more complete data on the past of the geomagnetic field even though their investigation requires instruments of high sensitivity and exact processing technique. A brief geological description and chronological list of individual sedimentary cycles are presented and the results of their palaeomagnetic investigation on a number of samples (about 2 000) are given. The obtained results suggest that the geomagnetic field probably displayed successive changes in the position of its magnetic axis shifting from the region of the south pole to the region of the north pole over a period of approximately 2.5 millions of years in the form of oscillations caused by impulses recurring at periods of about 140 000 years. Three types of changes of the geomagnetic field with different periods can be identified (Fig. 2): not always expressive changes with the period of 2.5 × 10 4 years, quasisinusoidal changes with a period of about 1.4 × 10 5 years and long-term changes most likely also periodical with the period of about 2.5 × 10 6 years. The first and the second periods, particularly, are close to the precession constants as far as the magnitude is concerned. Thus it can be stated that the differences in the precession rates of the motion of the core and the mantle may markedly act together in the origin of the geomagnetic field.

Notes: Summary The paper brings a brief geological asessment of the sedimentational cycles, analyses the methods of collection and investigation of samples and the representativeness of the results obtained. Problems of magnetic cleaning and the types of demagnetization curves investigated are discussed. The continuous nature of the variations of the magnetic declination, inclination and remanent magnetization, determined by palaeomagnetic investigation of Quaternary sediments, is also discussed. The conclusion contains the principal facts about the dynamics of the geomagnetic field in the Quaternary and points out the possibility of applying them to the theory of the geomagnetic field, as well as to geological correlations.

Notes: Summary The pattern of palaeomagnetic curves, describing the pole “motions” for the individual continental blocks, was investigated using world-wide palaeomagnetic data with particular regard to the epochs of the Cambrian and the Ordovician. Czechoslovakian data were used to judge the suitability of the pole positions which could be considered either as north or south, and to revise the curves by a suitable choice of polarity, so that they could be used to deduce unique trajectories of continental wandering, as well as their configuration in a single ancient continent, the Pangaea, in the Cambrian. Moreover, the system of curves may also be used to determine directly the distribution of the continents in the individual geological epochs. It was found that the continental drift was markedly affected by the Coriolis force. Mainly rotational motions of the continental blocks were observed round a point centre of rotation, clockwise in the Northern Hemisphere. An explanation of the development of the world-wide system of continental blocks from the Cambrian to the present is proposed. The results indicate that the geographic poles have not changed their positions considerably and that the geomagnetic field always had a dipole character. The investigated distribution of the continental blocks for the individual geological epochs agrees with the palaeolontological and geological facts pertaining to changes of climate, as determined for the individual continents. An important result is the determination of the “pilot-pole” centre (approximately 30° N, 30° E) around which rotational and translational motions of the continental blocks took place and which enable one to determine the positions of the continents in the geological past in terms of the present geographic network.
