Description: The biotic effects of volcanism have long been the unknown factors in creating biotic stress, and the contribution of the Deccan volcanism to the K-T mass extinction remains largely unknown. Detailed studies of the volcanic-rich sediments of Indian Ocean Ninetyeast Ridge Sites 216 and 217 and Wharton Basin Site 212 reveal that the biotic effects of late Maastrichtian volcanism on planktic foraminifera and calcareous nannofossils are locally as severe as those of the K-T mass extinction. The biotic expressions of these high stress environments are characterized by the Lilliput effect, which includes reduced diversity by eliminating most K-strategy species, and reduction in specimen size (dwarfing), frequently to less than half their normal adult size of both r-strategy and surviving K-strategy species. In planktic foraminifera, the most extreme biotic stress results are nearly monospecific assemblages dominated by the disaster opportunist Guembelitria, similar to the aftermath of the K-T mass extinction. The first stage of improving environmental conditions results in dominance of dwarfed low oxygen tolerant Heterohelix species and the presence of a few small r-strategy species (Hedbergella, Globigerinelloides). Calcareous nannofossil assemblages show similar biotic stress signals with the dominance of Micula decussata, the disaster opportunist, and size reduction in the mean length of subordinate r-strategy species particularly in Arkhangelskiella cymbiformis and Watznaueria barnesiae. These impoverished and dwarfed late Maastrichtian assemblages appear to be the direct consequences of mantle plume volcanism and associated environmental changes, including high nutrient influx leading to eutrophic and mesotrophic waters, low oxygen in the water column and decreased watermass stratification.

Notes: BFP, a plasmid-encoded type IV bundle-forming pilus produced by enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC), has recently been shown to be associated with the aggregation of bacteria and dispersal of bacteria from bacterial microcolonies. In standard 3 h HEp-2 cell assays, EPEC adhere in localized microcolonies; after 6 h, bacterial microcolonies are no longer present, indicating that bacterial aggregation and dispersal occurs in vitro during EPEC adhesion to cultured epithelial cells. To examine the role of BFP in EPEC aggregation and dispersal, we examined HEp-2 cell adhesion of strain E2348/69 and defined E2348/69 mutants by immunofluorescence and immunoelectron microscopy. BFP was expressed initially as ≈ 40 nm diameter pilus bundles that promoted bacteria–bacteria interaction and microcolony formation. BFP subsequently underwent a striking alteration in structural organization with the formation of much longer and thicker (≈ 100 nm diameter) pilus bundles, which frequently aggregated laterally to form even thicker bundles often arranged in a loose three-dimensional network; EPEC dispersal from bacterial microcolonies was associated with this transformation of BFP from thin to thick bundles. Bacterial dispersal and transformation of BFP from thin to thick bundles did not occur with a bfpF mutant of strain E2348/69. It is concluded that BFP promotes both the formation and the dispersal of EPEC microcolonies, that the dispersal phase requires BfpF and that dispersal is associated with dramatic alterations in the structure of BFP bundles.

Notes: [Auszug] The capacity to moderate internal and external stress is arguably the central function regulating senescence in whole-animal ageing. During ageing, molecular chaperones such as heat-shock proteins are thought to combat stress-related senescent dysfunction. In transgenic Drosophila melanogaster, ...
