Notes: A CO2 sensor made of nano crystalline CuO–BaTiO3 semiconductor, which has a giant capacitance effect, is designed based on the principle of the physical effect in the nano cluster. After an experimental investigation of its microstructure, the correlation between the quantum size effect and the giant capacitance effect is suggested. The characteristic physical quantities relating to the giant capacitance effect of the sensor are studied systematically with the aid of a gas detector. The quantum size effect is introduced as an interpretation for the mechanism of the giant capacitance effect and a model is proposed for describing the giant capacitance effect of the sensor. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The effects of carbon addition on thermal stability and hardness of Zr41Ti14Cu12.5Ni10Be22.5 bulk amorphous alloy were investigated. It is found that a small amount of carbon addition further extends the supercooled liquid range and enhances the thermal stability and strength of the alloy. More carbon addition results in the formation of a crystalline and amorphous mixture accompanied by a pronounced increase in microhardness. The effects of the carbon addition on the amorphous alloy are discussed from the structural point of view. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Shear band development in consolidated nanocrystalline and ultrafine-grained Fe has been monitored as a function of overall strain from the onset of plastic deformation. The deformation mechanisms of the grains inside the shear bands, the origin of the inhomogeneous deformation, and the propensity for shear localization in nanostructures are explained based on microstructural information acquired using transmission electron microscopy. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Under the influence of capillary forces, colloidal particles embedded in a soap film self-organize to form polycrystalline monolayers when the film is withdrawn from a concentrated suspension. Here, we show that mechanically generated capillary waves on the free surface of the bulk colloidal suspension can cause migration of grain boundaries, and under certain conditions, completely eliminate them. This dramatic effect, we call "mechanic annealing," provides a robust means of growing two-dimensional single crystals with size that has never been achieved before. The method is expected to be applicable to a variety of self-assembling systems. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A collection of ceramics and samples, collected from north-east China with ages ranging from 1000 to 7000 years, have been investigated using a modified version of the Shaw palaeointensity techniques (Shaw 1974; Rolph & Shaw 1985) in which only partial NRMs and TRMs (PNRMs and PTRMs) with blocking temperatures (Tb) above 300 d̀C are used after pre-selection of samples by mineral magnetic analysis. A secular variation curve obtained from this study is quite consistent with previous results from other areas of China (Wei et al. 1987; Tang et al. 1991), as well as with the global model of McElhinny & Senanayake (1982). Comparison of the Chinese results with contemporaneous results from Greece (Aitken et al. 1989) has allowed us to track the movement of a large non-dipole anomaly as it drifts westwards.

Notes: : Natto was made in a laboratory scale from soybean using 2 steaming times, 9 Bacillus natto strains, and 6 fermentation times. Natto characteristics including color, firmness, viscosity, ammonia content, and bacteria population were determined. The highest viscosity value of the final products was the natto inoculated with B. natto“Itobiki strain”; the 2nd was natto with B. natto NRRL B-3383 strain. A higher steaming time reduced fermentation time and ammonia content in the final products. A combination of soaking at the room temperature for 20 h (weight increase ratio: 2.1 to 2.3), steaming at 121°C for 40 min, inoculated with “Itobiki strain” or NRRL-3383 strain, and fermented at 40 to 42°C for 18 h was able to produce good natto products in a laboratory scale.

Notes: The authors reviewed the aquacultural history of Acipenseriformes in China, related the legal status and examined the current status of the cultured species or hybrids, origins of seedlings, quantities of production, geographic distribution in farming, and the sustainability for both restocking programmes and human consumption. The census shows that since 2000, the production of cultured sturgeons in China appears to have become the largest in the world. As of 2000, the rapid growth of sturgeon farming in China mainly for commercial purposes has shifted harvests in the Amur River from caviar production to the artificial culture of sturgeon seedlings. This dramatic development has also caused a series of extant and potential problems, including insufficient market availability and the impact of exotic sturgeons on indigenous sturgeon species. Annual preservation of sufficient higher-age sturgeons should be a national priority in order to establish a sustainable sturgeon-culture industry and to preserve a gene pool of critically endangered sturgeon species to prevent their extinction.

Notes: A collection of Chinese ceramics covering the time period 2700-7500 BP has been investigated using adaptations of both the Thellier & Thellier (1959) and Shaw (1974) palaoeintensity techniques. Several rock magnetic techniques were used to investigate the magnetic properties of the samples and on the basis of these measurements some samples were rejected because of their poor magnetic behaviour. Anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS), thermo-remanent magnetization (TRM) and anhysteretic remanent magnetization (ARM) were investigated. Based on the relationship between ARM and TRM anisotropy, modified ARMs were used for anisotropy correction. Twenty samples were studied using the Shaw method and 34 were studied using the Thellier method. An acceptable agreement between the results from the two methods was found. General features of the secular variation of geomagnetic intensity determined from the present study are consistent with those of the global model of McElhinny & Senanayake (1982).
