    Notes: Fatty acid composition of five species of freshwater fish, three marine fish and seven brackish water fish were determined by GLC. Of the saturated fatty acids C16:0 and C18:0 are found to be the dominant ones with C16:0 accounting for 50-55% of the total saturated acids. Among the monounsaturated fatty acids C16:1 and C18:1 and polyunsaturated fatty acids C18:2, C18:3, C20:4, C20:5 and C22:6 are found to be the important ones. Stinging cat fish contained the highest amount of C16:1 (16.52%). The level of arachidonic acid was fairly high in most of the fish lipids analyzed. The ratio C18:1/C18:2 is higher for marine fish than for the freshwater fish and is fairly constant for each group. The fatty acid composition of brackish water fish do not show any definite pattern.

    Notes: Abstract Sublethal effects of terbuthylazine and carbofuran on the growth and reproduction of Eisenia andrei were investigated over a period of three generations. Reproduction was assessed by measuring the coccon production of worms treated chronically with pesticides. Inhibition of cocoon production was found in the parental generation. Hatchlings were raised from cocoons to provide the F1 generation. During raising a more rapid growth of juveniles treated with terbuthylazine was observed, compared with the growth of untreated worms. The increase in vitality was also found in cocoon production. Groups treated with terbuthylazine produced more cocoons than controls. The F2 generation was raised from hatchlings of the F1 generation, and here, also the terbuthylazine treatments increased earthworm growth, but not cocoon production. Exposure to carbofuran decreased cocoon production in all generations. Growth of the F1 generation was not influenced by low concentrations of carbofuran.

    Notes: Abstract Legumes, leafy vegetables,roots and tubers, gourds and other vegetables were analyzed for total (TDF), soluble (SDF) and insoluble (IDF) dietaryfiber contents, both before and after cooking eitherby a conventional open-pan method or by pressurecooker. Data revealed a significant increase inSDF fraction with a concomitant decrease in the IDFfraction upon cooking by both the methods employed. Although the decrease in IDF matched the increase inSDF values in some cases, it was found to be more invegetables categorized as `other'. The dietary fiber values have also been reported on a fresh weight basis which may serve as a guideline for calculating dietary intake of eachcomponent by the consumer.

    Notes: Abstract Curry leaves are one of the spices used in Indian dishes for aroma and preservation. There are no reports on the antioxidant properties of curry leaves. In this study, the antioxidant potential of curry leaves in rats treated with a known chemical carcinogen, dimethylhydrazine hydrochloride (DMH) was investigated. Food intake was reduced in the rats fed curry leaf-supplemented diet but the body and the organ weights were not affected.Vitamin A content in the liver was significantly increased whereas glutathione (GSH) content was not altered. A 50% reduction was seen in the micronuclei induced by DMH and a 30% reduction in the activity of γ,-glutamyl transpeptidase when the rats were fed a curry leaf-supplemented diet. These results indicate that curry leaves have highpotential as reducer of the toxicity of DMH.

    Notes: Abstract Seeds of Teramnus labialis (L.) Spreng.(Fabaceae), used as food by Malayali tribals in theKollihills of Salem District, Tamil Nadu in SouthIndia, were investigated for their nutritional value. These seeds were analyzed for proximate composition,total (true) seed proteins, seed proteinfractions, amino acid composition, fatty acidcomposition, minerals and antinutritional factors. Crude protein, crude fat, ash, and nitrogen freeextracts constituted 22.86%, 6.10%, 4.62%, and,58.15%, respectively, of the seed weight. The caloricvalue of 100 g dry matter of seed material was 378.94kcal. The essential amino acids lysine, leucine +isoleucine, arginine, valine and histidine werepresent in relatively large quantities. Theunsaturated fatty acids constituted more than 60% ofthe crude fat. Concentrations of minerals such aspotassium, magnesium, calcium, and, phosphorus werehigh. Antinutritional factors such as total freephenols, tannins, L-DOPA, hydrogen cyanide andphytic acid were present in minute quantities. Theseantinutritional factors are potentially eliminated using the conventional method of soaking the seeds in water,boiling with water and decanting prior to consumption.

    Notes: Abstract Wheat production is often limited by continual or terminal heat stress. The current study was aimed at the characterization of wild relatives and cultivated Triticum species for their heat tolerance in yield and its analysis in relation to yield components which confer yield stability at the three ploidy levels. Thirty-two non-cultivated and cultivated genotypes belonging to diploid, tetraploid and hexaploid wheat species were evaluated for heat stress tolerance in the field under full irrigation. Wheat species were sown in the field(New Delhi, India; 77°12′E, 28°40′N, 228.6 m m.s.l) at two dates of sowing, November (normal) and January (late Sowing) during winter seasons of 1994–95 and 1995–96. The late sown crop experienced 3°C warmer temperatures than that of the normal sown crop. Wide variability was observed for grain yield stability under heat stress, as the heat susceptibility index (S) ranged from 0.13 to 2.08. Hexaploidy conferred the productive and adaptive advantages as it combined high yield and stability when compared to the tetraploid and diploid groups. However within each ploidy group wide variation was observed for heat tolerance. T. aestivum cv C306 & HI1136, T. dicoccoides, T. monococcum acc. BSP1 and Ae. speltoides ssp. liqustica were highly heat tolerant in their grain yield. Stability in grain no. m- 2 conferred yield stability in all three ploidy levels, although grain weight stability also contributed to yield stability in moderately stable T. turgidum and T. sphaerococcum under heat stress. Higher biomass and grain no. m-2 are the two important traits which could be considered potential selection criteria for yield under heat stress. Of the two components of grain no. m-2, stability in spike no. m-2could be considered more important trait than grain no. spike-1. Since wide variation for heat tolerance of all the yield components are available among the wheat species, these species can be used for improving specific yield components of cultivated wheat.
