    Notes: Summary 1. Mechanical and chemical sensitivity of the palatine nerve, ramus palatinus facialis, innervating the anterior palate of the puffer,Fugu pardalis, and their central projection to the primary taste center were investigated. 2. Application of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) to the central cut end of the palatine nerve resulted in retrogradely labeled neurons in the geniculate ganglion but no such neurons in the trigeminal ganglion, suggesting that the palatine nerve is represented only by the facial component. 3. Tracing of the facial sensory root in serial histological sections of the brain stem suggested that the facial sensory nerve fibers project only to the visceral sensory column of the medulla. 4. Peripheral recordings from the palatine nerve bundle showed that both mechanical and chemical stimuli caused marked responses. Mechanosensitive fibers were rather uniformly distributed in the nerve bundle. 5. Intra-cranial recordings from the trigeminal and facial nerves at their respective roots revealed that tactile information produced in the anterior palate was carried by the facial nerve fibers. 6. Elimination of the sea water current over the receptive field also caused a marked response in the palatine nerve bundle or facial nerve root while this did not cause any detectable responses in the trigeminal nerve root. 7. Single fiber analyses of the mechanical responsiveness of the palatine nerve were performed by recording unit responses of 106 single fibers to mechanical stimuli (water flow), HCl (0.005M), uridine-5′-monophosphate (UMP, 0.001M), proline (0.01M), CaCl2 (0.5M), and NaSCN (0.5M). All these fibers responded well to one of the above stimuli; however, most taste fibers did not respond well to the inorganic salts. The palatine fibers (n=36), identified as mechanosensitive, never responded to any of the chemical stimuli, whereas chemosensitive fibers (n=70) did not respond to mechanical stimuli at all. The chemosensitive units showed a high specificity to the above stimuli: they tended to respond selectively to hydrochloric acid, UMP, or proline. 8. The responses of the mechanosensitive units consisted of phasic and tonic impulse trains and the sensitivity of the units varied considerably. 9. The results reveal that the facial nerve fibers innervating the anterior palate of the puffer contain two kinds of afferent fibers, chemosensory and mechanosensory respectively, and suggest that the convergence of the tactile and gustatory information first occurs in the neurons of the primary gustatory center in the medulla.

    Notes: Summary The distribution of endocrine cells in the gastrointestinal tract of the house musk shrew, Suncus murinus (Family Soricidae, Order Insectivora) was studied immunohistochemically. The hormones investigated were gastrin, cholecystokinin (CCK), somatostatin, secretin, glucagon, gastric inhibitory polypeptide (GIP), motilin and neurotensin. In the gastric mucosa, gastrin and somatostatin cells were only found in the pyloric regions, and no other hormonal cell-types were observed. In the intestinal mucosa, the largest number of endocrine cells belonged to the gastrin and glucagon/glicentin cell-types, whereas CCK-33/39 and secretin cells were the least numerous. Numbers of other cell-types were intermediate between these two groups. The gastrin and GIP cells were mostly localized in the proximal portion of the intestine, decreasing in number towards the distal portion. The motilin and CCK-33/39 cells were restricted to the proximal half. The glucagon/glicentin and neurotensin cells were most abundant in the middle portion. The somatostatin and secretin cells, although only present in small numbers, were randomly distributed throughout the intestine. This characteristic distribution of gastrointestinal endocrine cells is discussed in comparison with the distribution patterns of other mammals.

    Notes: Abstract The microwave characteristics of the BaTi4O9-BaPr2Ti4O12 system were investigated, including its microstructure and infrared reflection spectroscopy. It was found that this system is entirely composed of two phases, BaTi4O9 and BaPr2Ti4O12, and it is suggested that the lattices of each phase are well matched obliquely at the interface in the sintered ceramics. The dielectric properties are compared with calculated values deduced from the mixing relations of the two components. Furthermore, the infrared reflection spectra of this system were analysed with the factorized form of the dielectric function, for the purpose of studying the applicability of the reflection analysis technique to this mixed phase system.

    Notes: Cytological changes following transection of the proximal root of the trigeminal ganglion in adult rats were assessed by light and electron microscopy. Radices were transected about 3-5 mm from the ganglia and animals were killed from 1 to 60 days after the operation. Light microscopically, it was found that all Nissl granules became uniformly stained and evenly distributed throughout the cytoplasm within 3 days. Three types of cell alteration involving Nissl granules occurred within 3 to 12 days after the operation: (1) chromatolysis, (2) dark staining of the cytoplasm accompanied by an increase of Nissl granules, and (3) faint staining of the cytoplasm accompanied by dispersion of Nissl granules. Electron microscopically, the chromatolysis pattern was characterized by peripheral concentration of the granular endoplasmic reticulum (gER) and ribosomes in the cytoplasm. Neurons of the darkstaining type showed an increased number of polysomal complexes throughout the cytoplasm, whereas those of the faint-staining type had diffusely dispersed cisternae of the gER which were shortened and bore reduced numbers of attached ribosomes. Perinuclear localization of profiles of Golgi complexes disappeared temporarily 1-3 days after the operation, but the normal perinuclear pattern appeared to return after 1 week. Enzyme histochemistry of acid phosphatase activity revealed an increase in the number of very fine reaction products in the cytoplasm up to 14 days following the operation. Cells recovered the normal pattern of Nissl staining by 48 days. Myelin figures, which are rarely observed in normal ganglia, were still observed in dense lysosomal bodies after 30 days. Nuclear size in affected neurons steadily increased up to about 2 weeks postoperation but returned to normal by 48 days.

    Notes: The neurons of the trigeminal ganglia of the rat and chicken were characterized by means of light microscopic, electron microscopic, and histochemical methods. Light microscopy disclosed four types of neurons, based on the characteristics of Nissl granules: (1) large neurons with diffusely distributed and very fine granules, (2) neurons containing coarse and sparsely distributed Nissl granules, (3) neurons containing dense Nissl granules of varying size, and (4) small neurons with granules concentrated peripherally. Electron microscopy allowed further definition of these four types of neurons by the length and arrangement of flattened cisterns of granular endoplasmic reticulum (gER) and the number of neurofilaments. Type 1 cells were largest, with a mean nuclear area of 139.8 ± 28.3 μm2. Type 4 cells were smallest, with a mean nuclear area of 74.6 ± 20.9 μm2. The mean nuclear areas of type 2 and 3 cells were intermediate to those of the type 1 and 4 cells. Type 3 and 4 neurons lacked neurofilaments. Four forms of Golgi apparatus were found: (1) large bent grains forming a network throughout the soma, (2) dispersed fine granular deposits, (3) fine or small granules, and (4) coarse bent deposits arranged confluently in the perinuclear zone. In some rat neurons, the concentration of acid phosphatase reaction products suggested a high enzymatic activity, whereas the chicken ganglion cells showed no such concentration. These findings are discussed and compared with the classifications of previous studies.
