Notes: Observations on steady state ion-rich sheath around a negatively biased grid in a double plasma device have been made in multicomponent plasma with negative ions. A hump in the potential profile is found to occur at the sheath edge. The characteristics of the hump depend on the grid voltage, source biasing voltage, density difference in the two chambers, and the negative to positive ion concentration ratio. It is argued that resonance which is coupled with the beam ions and background ions is associated in the excitation mechanism to create the nonsymmetrical structures in the plasma potential profile. Below the critical concentration ratio, the hump grows in height and above the critical ratio, the width of the hump increases but the height decreases and ultimately it vanishes. The variation in the hump potential profile due to the injection of negative ions can be explained by the ion momentum exchange and by their dynamics. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We develop a simple computational tool for SU(3) analogous to Bargmann's calculus for SU(2). Crucial new inputs are (i) explicit representation of the Gelfand–Zetlin basis in terms of polynomials in four variables and positive or negative integral powers of a fifth variable, (ii) an auxiliary Gaussian measure with respect to which the Gelfand–Zetlin states are orthogonal but not normalized, (iii) simple generating functions for generating all basis states and also all invariants. As an illustration of our techniques, an algebraic formula for the Clebsch–Gordan coefficients is obtained for the first time. This involves only Gaussian integrations. Thus SU(3) is made as accessible for computations as SU(2) is. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: It is shown that the Gelfand-Weyl pattern for SU(3) can be uniquely expressed in terms of four non-negative and one positive or negative free integers. This provides an optimal, albeit non-linear, boson calculus for SU(3) in terms of four harmonic oscillators and one planar rotor. (By optimal it is meant that every irreducible representation is obtained once and once only.) Our techniques can be generalized to other groups. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: In this paper, a novel neural network controlled Hybrid Parallel Active Power Filter has been presented. The neural network controller comprises two similar adaptive linear neurons (ADALINE), and it has been designed to extract fundamental frequency components from non-sinusoidal and unbalanced currents. It has been shown that the proposed neural controller is simple, fast and accurate. The proposed system is implemented using Digital Signal Processor (DSP). Experimental results with different nonlinear loads are presented to confirm the validity of the proposed technique.

Notes: Recently, using a non-linear programming method authors have demonstrated that based on certain criteria if some non-significant selectivity constraints are relaxed, all remaining constraints happen to be feasible but the solution of coordination problem is not possible with the conventional objective function as optimization procedure leaves the solution space [20]. In coordination studies solution with the conventional objective function provides minimum relay operating times. The present paper describes an additional criterion so that the solution with the conventional objective function can be achieved. This paper also achieves the acceptable speed of the primary protection while attempting to coordinate the maximum relay pairs. Complete results are presented in this paper in this regard. This paper uses the non-linear Random Search Technique to solve the coordination problem, which has been successfully applied in many problem areas.

Notes: Series compensation at the midpoint of a transmission line creates problems to conventional protection approaches. A new fault classification technique has been developed for a transmission line with a series capacitor at the midpoint, having different percentages of compensation varying from 25% to 75%. The proposed technique requires three line currents and voltages at each end and computes fundamental phasors of these quantities using a modified version of Full Cycle Discrete Fourier Transform. Using these phasors, the absolute values of three phase impedances are calculated for faulted phase identification. Moreover, the involvement of the ground in the fault is identified using a zero sequence component of the fault current. Using a PSCAD/EMTDC software package, a large test data (28,800) set has been generated with different types of faults and system variables, which includes fault resistances, fault inception angles, fault positions (before and after series capacitor) and variable loading conditions along with wide variations in the source impedances at both ends of a transmission line. The proposed scheme is tested on the said data set and the results are found to be promising. The results indicate that the proposed technique is fast, accurate and robust for a wide variation in system and fault conditions.

Notes: When two protective apparatus installed in series have characteristics, which provide a specified operating sequence, they are said to be coordinated or selective. The coordination of directional overcurrent relays poses serious problems in the modern complex power system networks, which are interconnected. Researchers have looked upon the problem of coordination from different considerations by making use of computer aids. Many efforts have been made to the automation of the coordination process in the area of relay coordination. This paper compiles the most of the significant developments in the area of time-overcurrent relay coordination using different techniques and methodologies. It is hoped that this work will be useful for future generation researchers to find the relevant references to advance the research work in future.
