    Notes: : A synoptic sampling of five surface-water sites in central Nebraska was conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey as part of its National Water-Quality Assessment Program during storm runoff in May 1992 to relate transport, yields, and concentrations of atrazine to environmental setting. Atrazine was the most extensively applied pesticide in the study unit. Atrazine transport was related to the size of contributing drainage area, quantity of atrazine applied, amount of precipitation, and volume of stream-flow. Estimated yields and mean concentrations of atrazine were related to the percentage of cropland in a drainage area. The largest estimated yields and mean concentrations of atrazine in surface water were associated from drainage areas with the highest percentage of cropland, and the smallest was associated with the smallest amount of cropland. Atrazine concentrations increased as streamflow increased but decreased at or near the time of peak streamflows, perhaps due to dilution. Atrazine concentrations then increased and remained elevated far into the stream recession. Atrazine is a regulated contaminant in finished public-water supplies. Large concentrations of atrazine could affect the management of public-water supplies because atrazine remains in solution in contrast to many other pesticides that are more easily removed.

    Notes: Sensory ratings, respiratory behavior and eye blink rate were recorded in 11 nonsmokers exposed to a no-smoking (CONTROL) condition or to environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) from one of three kinds of cigarettes: a Kentucky reference (1R4F), an ultra-low tar (ULT) and one that heats tobacco (TEST).For each two-hour session in a controlled-environment room, two smokers “puffed” unlit cigarettes, for the CONTROL condition, or smoked 16 cigarettes to generate ETS (sidestream plus exhaled mainstream smoke). Concentrations of nicotine and respirable suspended particles (RSP) observed with the 1R4F and ULT cigarettes were 10- to 20-fold higher than those typically found in field sampling studies of office and restaurant smoking environments. The ULT and TEST cigarettes resulted in ETS analyte concentrations that were 77-100% and O-56%, respectively, of those observed with 1R4E Sensory ratings (odor, irritation, annoyance, acceptability) with the two tobacco-burning cigarettes were similar and were much greater than those recorded for the TEST or CONTROL conditions which were, in turn, rated similarly. Respiratory parameters (respiratory rate, tidal volume, expiratory time), which generally failed to discriminate the TEST and CONTROL conditions, were altered during exposure to ETS from the 1R4F and, to a lesser extent, the ULT cigarette. Eye blink rate was not significantly altered by ETS from any of the cigarettes.

    Notes: Abstract To estimate the perceptual, psychophysiological and cognitive impact of environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) on non-smokers, seventeen male never-smokers, ages 21–33, were exposed to five concentrations yielding mean ETS-respirable suspended particles (RSP) levels of 58, 113, 217, 368, and 765 μg/m3. During each 90-minute session, four smokers were seated behind a partition and smoked, when cued, to generate 70-minute exposures. For control exposures, smokers “puffed” on unlit cigarettes. Odor Strength, Annoyance, Overall Acceptance and Eye Irritation at the lowest level were significantly different from control values and the degree of change generally increased monotonically with ETS level. Fatigue was not affected by any ETS level. Odor Strength (rated highest of all attributes at all levels) at the 217 μg/m3 ETS-RSP level was 12.5% of the maximum odor intensity experienced prior to the study. No effect of ETS on information processing was observed. Psychological state and eye blink rate were affected at only the 765 μg/m3 ETS-RSP level. During times when the participants were not completing a questionnaire or test, all ETS levels resulted in a 5–8% decrease in respiratory rate, due largely to an increase in expiratory duration, but no change in minute ventilation. The breathing changes may represent a psychophysiological response mediated by the olfactory system. Non-smokers are aware of ETS at ETS-RSP concentrations as low as 58 μg/m3 (˜80-fold higher than the level typical of current U.S. workplace environments where smoking is permitted) but its sensory impact remains relatively small until ETS-RSP concentrations above 217 μg/m3 are encountered.

    Notes: : Recurrent calls for integrated resource management urge that an understanding of human activities and populations be incorporated into natural resource research, management, and protection efforts. In this paper, we hypothesize that watersheds can be a valuable geography for organizing an inquiry into the relationship between humans and the environment, and we present a framework for conducting such efforts. The framework is grounded in the emerging field of landscape ecology and incorporates demographic theory and data. Demography has been advanced by technological capabilities associated with the 1990 Census. Employing Geographic Information System (GIS) tools, we couple Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) land cover data with census-derived housing density data to demonstrate the operation of our framework and its utility for better understanding human-landscape interactions. In our investigation of the Kickapoo Watershed and two sub- watersheds, located in southwestern Wisconsin, we identify relationships between landscape composition and the distribution and social structure of human populations. Our findings offer insight into the interplay between people and biophysical systems.

    Notes: Abstract We investigate bursting behaviour generated in an electrophysiological model of pituitary corticotrophs. The active and silent phases of this mode of bursting are generated by moving between two stable oscillatory solutions. The bursting is indirectly driven by slow modulation of the endoplasmic reticulum Ca2+ concentration. The model exhibits different modes of bursting, and we investigate mode transitions and similar modes of bursting in other Hodgkin-Huxley models. Bifurcation analysis and the use of null-surfaces facilitate a geometric interpretation of the model bursting modes and action potential generation, respectively.

    Notes: Abstract Material compositions for both copper and optical fiber building cables are currently being reevaluated in view of increasing domestic and international concerns regarding combustion with respect to smoke emission, corrosive combustion gases, and material chemical composition. The rationale and driving force behind an increasing desire for data and telecommunications cables with unique chemical or combustion characteristics vary among the global community. Several specific differences between the domestic and international emphasis with respect to fire hazard assessment testing procedures are discussed. For applications which are suitable for particular combustion characteristics, a balance of a multitude of combustion and cable performance parameters is suggested as being the most beneficial. A study designed and coordinated by AT&T Bell Laboratories was conducted to investigate the combustion properties of a wide range of highly flame retardant cable materials. A total of 39 commercial and developmental materials were tested. There were 24 materials classified as nonhalogen and 15 materials containing halogens beyond contamination levels. The cone calorimeter and a combustion gas exposure system were used to examine combustion parameters such as heat release and smoke release while also exploring the corrosivity of combustion gases. Copper metal loss corrosion was determined by resistance changes in circuit probes exposed to combustion gases of each material. The data indicated that a significant distribution overlap exists between the halogenated and the nonhalogenated classifications with respect to both heat release and smoke release. Several halogenated compounds produced significantly less total heat and smoke at the end of the test duration than nonhalogenated materials. In general, the combustion of halogenated materials resulted in significantly more corrosion than the combustion of most nonhalogenated materials. Evidence for some degree of overlap, however, was obtained. In addition, there was a considerable range of metal loss results within both the halogenated and the nonhalogenated classifications. Based on the data presented, assessment of fire hazard parameters such as heat release, smoke release, or combustion gas corrosivity should be built on performance-based tests rather than assumed relationships for broad material classifications.

    Notes: Abstract Directional (one-tailed) two-category univariable optimal discriminant analysis has proved highly useful for applications involving ordered attributes. An important criterion in the use of this analysis for a given application is the generalized Type I error rate associated with a given level of classification accuracy. The distribution of optima arising from this analysis performed for random data had been discovered earlier, but not proven. This article presents a formal mathematical proof of this theoretical distribution for balanced applications.

    Notes: Abstract An appropriate tabu search implementation is designed to solve the resource constrained project scheduling problem. This approach uses well defined move strategies and a structured neighbourhood, defines appropriate tabu status and tenure and takes account of objective function approximation to speed up the search process. A sound understanding of the problem has helped in many ways in designing and enhancing the tabu search methodology. The method uses diversification, intensification and handles infeasibility via strategic oscillation. The above methodology is tested on existing problems from the literature and also on parametrically generated problems with encouraging results. For comparison of results, optimal solutions are used in the former and lower bounds obtained by Lagrangian heuristics are used in the latter.
