    Description: Over the last few years the Shanghai electron beam ion trap (EBIT) has been successfully redesigned and rebuilt. The original machine, developed under collaboration with the Shanghai Institute of Applied Physics, first produced an electron beam in 2005. It could be tuned with electron energies between 1 and 130 keV and beam current up to 160 mA. After several years of operation, it was found that several modifications for improvements were necessary to reach the goals of better electron optics, higher photon detection, and ion injection efficiencies, and more economical running costs. The upgraded Shanghai-EBIT is made almost entirely from Ti instead of stainless steel and achieves a vacuum of less than 10 −10 Torr, which helps to minimize the loss of highly changed ions through charge exchange. Meanwhile, a more compact structure and efficient cryogenic system, and excellent optical alignment have been of satisfactory. The magnetic field in the central trap region can reach up till 4.8 T with a uniformity of 2.77 × 10 −4 . So far the upgraded Shanghai-EBIT has been operated up to an electron energy of 151 keV and a beam current of up to 218 mA, although promotion to even higher energy is still in progress. Radiation from ions as highly charged as Xe 53+, 54+ has been produced and the characterization of current density is estimated from the measured electron beam width.

    Description: We have developed a high-current laser ion source for induction accelerators. A copper target was irradiated by a frequency-quadrupled Nd:YAG laser (266 nm) with relatively low intensities of 10 8 W/cm 2 . The laser-produced plasma supplied a large number of Cu + ions (∼10 12 ions/pulse) during several microseconds. Emission spectra of the plasma were observed and the calculated electron temperature was about 1 eV. An induction voltage adder extracted high-current ion beams over 0.5 A/cm 2 from a plasma-prefilled gap. The normalized beam emittance measured by a pepper-pot method was smaller than 1 π mm mrad.

    Description: A multi-pulsed intense electron beam source is introduced, including the design and the initial experimental results. The source can generate a burst of three pulses of intense electron beams with energy of 2–3 MeV and beam intensities of around 2.5 kA. An inductive adder is chosen to generate the pulsed diode voltages and a dispenser cathode is chosen to emit electron beams. The test results indicate that the design of the source is reliable. The multi-pulsed diode voltage is up to 2.5 MV and the beam intensities are more than 2 kA at the exit of the source with small variation.

    Description: A lack of agreement between stalagmite records of the centennial- to decadal-scale Asian summer monsoon (ASM) variability since the mid Holocene limited our understanding of forcings and the possible impacts on culture evolution. Here we present replicated high-resolution stalagmite 18 O profiles from Dark Cave in Guizhou province, southwest China, established with 512 oxygen isotope data and 28 230 Th ages, providing a continuous history of the ASM precipitation from 6100 to 300 years before present (yr BP, before ad 1950). Consistency of stalagmite 18 O-inferred long-term decreasing ASM trends since the mid Holocene between caves at this site and others in the Indian and East Asian monsoon realms on orbital timescales supports the effect of primary orbital solar forcings on monsoonal precipitation. The Dark Cave records display significant centennial- to decadal-scale variations, more evident than previous stalagmite records. Spectral analysis of the Dark Cave 18 O time series yields periodicities of 731–723, 281, 91–83, 67, and 55–54 yr, implying ASM intensity for the last 6 kyr could be associated with solar activity and variability of El Niño-Southern Oscillation.

    Description: The traditional current integral method for the state-of-charge (SOC) estimation has an unusable estimation accuracy because of the current measuring error. This paper proposed a closed-loop temperature compensation method to improve the SOC estimation accuracy of current integral method by eliminating temperature drift. Through circuit simulation result in Multisim, the stability of current measuring accuracy is improved by more than 10 times. In a designed 70 charge-discharge experimental circle, the SOC estimation error with temperature compensation had 30 times less than error in normal situation without compensation.

    Description: The double-differential scattering cross-section for the inelastic scattering of x-ray photons from electrons is typically orders of magnitude smaller than that of elastic scattering. With samples 10-100 μm size in a diamond anvil cell at high pressure, the inelastic x-ray scattering signals from samples are obscured by scattering from the cell gasket and diamonds. One major experimental challenge is to measure a clean inelastic signal from the sample in a diamond anvil cell. Among the many strategies for doing this, we have used a focusing polycapillary as a post-sample optic, which allows essentially only scattered photons within its input field of view to be refocused and transmitted to the backscattering energy analyzer of the spectrometer. We describe the modified inelastic x-ray spectrometer and its alignment. With a focused incident beam which matches the sample size and the field of view of polycapillary, at relatively large scattering angles, the polycapillary effectively reduces parasitic scattering from the diamond anvil cell gasket and diamonds. Raw data collected from the helium exciton measured by x-ray inelastic scattering at high pressure using the polycapillary method are compared with those using conventional post-sample slit collimation.

    Description: The 16 ID-D (Insertion Device - D station) beamline of the High Pressure Collaborative Access Team at the Advanced Photon Source is dedicated to high pressure research using X-ray spectroscopy techniques typically integrated with diamond anvil cells. The beamline provides X-rays of 4.5-37 keV, and current available techniques include X-ray emission spectroscopy, inelastic X-ray scattering, and nuclear resonant scattering. The recent developments include a canted undulator upgrade, 17-element analyzer array for inelastic X-ray scattering, and an emission spectrometer using a polycapillary half-lens. Recent development projects and future prospects are also discussed.

    Notes: A new amplifier, designed to operate with fast semiconducting bolometers, is presented. Based on current detection of the bolometer signal, it allows one to obtain good sensitivity with response times of about 10 ns without using cryogenic electrical components. The amplifier was used to detect heat pulses propagating in a Si crystal.

    Notes: We describe modifications to an Oxford Model TLE 400 dilution refrigerator permitting measurements of microwave response at X-band. Coupling to the cavity is accomplished with a Gordon coupler involving a 1/4-in. access hole and a 1/4-in. dielectric rod running coaxial with the circular waveguide which feeds the microwave cavity. The rod extends through a vacuum load lock and may be removed. A stainless-steel sample insertion rod may then be inserted allowing top loading of specimens directly into the cavity; the samples themselves are attached to a copper fixture, involving a combination of left- and right-hand threads which may be reversibly screwed into and out of the bottom of the cavity. Preliminary surface impedance studies of s-wave superconductors (Sn, Zn, and In) and the heavy fermion UPt3 superconductor have been performed with this spectrometer.
