Notes: Abstract The combined effects of Hall current and plate temperature oscillation on the hydromagnetic free convective flow through a porous medium bounded by an infinite vertical limiting surface in a rotating fluid are discussed. The suction velocity perpendicular to the limiting surface is constant and the temperature of the limiting surface fluctuates with time about a non-zero constant mean. The expressions for the velocity and temperature fields are derived, and the effects of various parameters on the velocity and shear-stress are determined.

Notes: Summary A theoretical analysis of unsteady free convective and mass transfer flow through a porous medium bounded by an infinite vertical plate taking Hall effects into consideration is presented when a strong magnetic field is imposed in a direction which is perpendicular to the free stream and makes an angleα to the vertical direction. The effect of Hall currents on the flows (primary and secondary) are studied for various values ofα.

Notes: Abstract Taking Hall currents into account the unsteady magnetohydrodynamical flow through a porous medium bounded by an infinite vertical limiting surface in a rotating frame of reference is theoretically investigated when a strong magnetic field is imposed in a plane which makes an angle a with the normal to the plate. The influence of Hall currents on the velocity and temperature distribution are shown graphically for various values of α.

Notes: Abstract Taking Hall and Ion-slip currents into account the steady magnetohydrodynamic convective flow of a partially ionized gas past an infinite vertical porous plate in a rotating frame of reference is investigated theoretically. A strong magnetic field of uniform strength is applied perpendicular to the plate and the fluid is subjected to a normal suction velocity while the heat flux at the plate is constant. An analytic solution of the problem is obtained and the effect of Hall and ion-slip currents, as well as the other parameter entering into the problem, are discussed and shown graphically.

Notes: Abstract Surface properties of amorphous silicon thin films containing hydrogen, flourine and carbon obtained from hydrofluosilicic acid and ethylene glycol using the electrodeposition method are reported as a function of current density and deposition time. The Si2p core level X-ray photoelectron spectra exhibited binding-energy shifts corresponding to SiFx (x=1–4), SiC, Si–H and Si–O2 type bond formations. The shifts in 1s spectra of fluorine, carbon and oxygen confirmed the presence of fluorine, carbon and oxygen in bonded form. Theoretical binding-energy shifts calculated from Pauling's electronegativity values were in close agreement with the measured values. The relative concentration values of C/Si estimated in these films were found to be larger than those of F/Si and O/Si. The results were corroborated with infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy data.

Notes: A new finite difference scheme for the convection-diffusion equation with variable coefficients is proposed. The difference scheme is defined on a single square cell of size 2h over a 9-point stencil and has a truncation error of order h4. The resulting system of equations can be solved by iterative methods. Numerical results of some test problems are given.
