Notes: This article describes how a thin wedge can be combined with two Michelson laser interferometers to determine precisely the refractive index of liquids. The precision of our experimental technique is such that the refractive index values obtained with this method can yield results with a statistical error of 5×10−6. The experimental refractive index values of ethanol, CCl4, toluene, benzene, and CS2 obtained by using bidistilled water as a reference are reported.

Notes: The ability to measure resistive current resulting from high-field carrier mobility in dielectrics provides insight into transport phenomena and high-voltage performance. The threshold electric field for the formation of a space-charge limited field region under highly inhomogeneous field conditions has fundamental significance in that above this field, rapid degradation takes place from hot electrons and UV photons generated by carrier recombination. A guarded needle electrode with a tip radius in the range of 5 μm and an electrical guard which extends to within about 35 μm of the tip provides the basis for measuring high-field mobility as the resistive current can be measured independent of the displacement current. The residual displacement current resulting from the fF capacitance from the needle tip to the opposite plane electrode is compensated out of the measurement. In this article, we provide construction details for such a guarded needle. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract In this work, we present a new, computationally simple scheme (termed multi-shot approach) to separate and detect multiuser signals in an asynchronous code-division multiple-access (CDMA) communications system. By exploring the structure inherent in the matrix decomposition of properly arranged data, obtained from multi-shot matched filtering, we propose a near-far resistant multiuser detector. The proposed multiuser detector combines the multiple snapshots of matched filter outputs through a matrix filtering and de-biasing processing, revealed from the structure inherent in properly arranged data, prior to the final stage of decision making. Simulation results demonstrate the superior performance of the newly proposed computationally efficient detection scheme in comparison with other existing methods of comparable complexity.

Notes: Abstract In this paper, a high power Nd:YAG laser system is described, which consists of an actively-passively mode-locked Nd:YAG laser oscillator with variable subnanosecond pulsewidths (200 ps to 1 ns), a Pockels-cell shutter and a coaxial four-pass Nd:YAG amplifier. With the oscillator operating in the colliding pulse regime, and a BDN dye film as the saturable absorber, and an acousto-optic modulator as the active modelocker, we have achieved a shot-to-shot stability of the pulse-train amplitude 〈 ±4%. For a 0.1 mJ, 200 ps laser pulse, we obtained four-pass amplification of 7 × 102 with a pump energy of 106 J.

Notes: Abstract In the square-wave PFM system for transmission of TV programmes through optical fibres, square-wave PFM pulses are generated at the transmitter with a relatively low centre frequency, whereas double-frequency equal-width narrow pulses are produced in the receiver before the demodulating low-pass filter, at both the rising and falling edges of the transmitted pulses. The use of the frequency-doubling technique in such a system results in narrow transmission bandwidth and high receiver sensitivity, thus prolonging the transmission distance significantly as compared with ordinary PFM. In the experiment, the system is operated at 1.3 μm with multimode fibre having bandwidth 700 MHz km, a laser diode as optical source and a PIN/FET as detector. It can effectively transmit the high-quality broadcast TV programme with accompanying sound channel to a distance of 50.7 km. Experimental results are: receiver sensitivity −40 dB m, weighted SNR for video 59.3 dB, differential gain and differential phase less than 1% and 1°, respectively.

Notes: Abstract In this paper, the event-driven concept is applied to the third order Charge-Pump Phase-Locked Loop (CP-PLL) and leads to the description of a behavioral model based on a set of exact and non-linear recursive equations. A simulator (SIMPLL), written in C and using this model, checks the conventional z-domain approximate stability theory and brings to the fore the strongly non-linear nature of the CP-PLL that a careful and safe design must take into account. Thus, in order to have a more exhaustive design characterization, a statistical analysis method is explored.

Notes: Abstract In this paper, tip tracking control is investigated for a single-link flexible robot. The flexible beam is first lumped to a spring-mass system, to which the so called backstepping approach is applicable, then two robust controllers and an adaptive controller are developed in the presence of system disturbances/uncertainties. The controllers are rigorously proven to be able to achieve stable tip position and velocity tracking control in the sense of Global Uniform Ultimate Boundedness (GUUB). Numerical simulation results are provided which show that the proposed controllers are effective.

Description: The hydropower generator unit (HGU) is a vital piece of equipment for frequency and peaking modulation in the power grid. Its vibration signal contains a wealth of information and status characteristics. Therefore, it is important to predict the vibration tendency of HGUs using collected real-time data, and achieve predictive maintenance as well. In previous studies, most prediction methods have only focused on enhancing the stability or accuracy. However, it is insufficient to consider only one criterion (stability or accuracy) in vibration tendency prediction. In this paper, an intelligence vibration tendency prediction method is proposed to simultaneously achieve strong stability and high accuracy, where vibration signal preprocessing, feature selection and prediction methods are integrated in a multi-objective optimization framework. Firstly, raw sensor signals are decomposed into several modes by empirical wavelet transform (EWT). Subsequently, the refactored modes can be obtained by the sample entropy-based reconstruction strategy. Then, important input features are selected using the Gram-Schmidt orthogonal (GSO) process. Later, the refactored modes are predicted through kernel extreme learning machine (KELM). Finally, the parameters of GSO and KELM are synchronously optimized by the multi-objective salp swarm algorithm. A case study and analysis of the mixed-flow HGU data in China was conducted, and the results show that the proposed model performs better in terms of predicting stability and accuracy.
