    Notes: We use seismic wave polarization directions to determine three-dimensional seismic velocity structure. Linearized inverse theory is used. The data kernel, which represents the change in polarization direction at the receiver due to perturbations in the velocity structure is computed by a variational technique that employs ray integrals. Three-dimensional tests of the method using synthetic data demonstrate its accuracy and usefulness in the presence of noise.

    Notes: In this paper, 3-D velocity images beneath the Chinese continent and adjacent regions are reconstructed using P-wave traveltime residuals of regional and distant earthquakes, supplied by Chinese seismic networks and ISC.In the tomographic inversion, an orthogonal projection operator is used to separate the velocity from the hypocentral parameters, the fast Givens transformation without square-root calculations is then used in sequential orthogonal triangularizations, and the modified singular value decomposition is also utilized. Thus the difficulties of large memory demand and high computing cost in solving the system of equations with coupled velocity and hypocentre parameters are avoided. At the same time the stability of the algorithm is ensured. Resolution images are also obtained in the inversion process, based on the resolution theory of Backus & Gilbert modified for discrete models. In model parametrization, the interpolation function of grid node velocities is used as the space function of velocity. To meet the practical needs, the velocity function is allowed to be discontinuous. The consequent complications of the forward problem have been dealt with in the paper.The main results are summarized as follows.(1) The velocity images given in this paper indicate lateral heterogeneity of the crust and upper mantle beneath the Chinese continent and adjacent regions, which persist down to a depth of at least 1100 km. The correlation between the velocity image and the known surface geological features can be traced down to a depth of 110 km. Below 220 km this correlation is hardly obvious.(2) The images at 45−0 km (immediately above the Moho) and 45+0 km (below the Moho) show clearly that the crust of the Chinese continent can be approximately divided into two parts by the 102.5°E longitude. The crust to the east is thinner than that to the west.(3) The images at 400 and 600 kin also display differences between the eastern and western part. This means that tectonic differences between eastern and western China may exist in the whole upper mantle.

    Notes: Abstract  Major and trace elements and Sm–Nd isotopic data are presented for metabasites that are present as lenses within Paleozoic metasediments in the Chenxing and Bangxi regions, central Hainan Island, Southeast (SE) China. Most metabasites are metamorphosed cumulated gabbroic rocks tholeiitic in nature, and characterized by varying degrees of depletion in Th, Nb, Ta and light rare earth elements (LREE). Moreover, they show high positive ∈Nd(T) values of approximately +7, similar to those of mid-ocean ridge basalts (MORB). A Sm–Nd isochron age of 333 ± 12 Ma obtained for the metabasites is interpreted as their crystallization age. The combined geochemical and Sm–Nd isotopic data suggest that the metabasites were generated by dynamic partial melting from a MORB-like mantle source in an oceanic regime. These rocks probably represent remnants of fragmented oceanic crust of the eastern part of Paleo-Tethys. They were obducted onto the continental crust as part of the ‘Shilu Mélange’ in earliest Mesozoic time when southern Hainan (part of the Indochina block) collided with northern Hainan (part of South China). Alternatively, they could be formed in a volcanic rifted passive margin at the sea-floor spreading stage as part of MORB-like seaward-dipping reflector break-up packages.

    Notes: The presence of perched water near the potential high-level nuclear waste repository area at Yucca Mountain, Nevada, has important implications for waste isolation. Perched water occurs because of sharp contrasts in rock properties, in particular between the strongly fractured repository host rock (the Topopah Spring welded tuff) and the immediately underlying vitrophyric (glassy) subunit, in which fractures are sealed by clays that were formed by alteration of the volcanic glass. The vitrophyre acts as a vertical barrier to unsaturated flow throughout much of the potential repository area. Geochemical analyses (Yang et al. 1996) indicate that perched water is relatively young, perhaps younger than 10,000 years. Given the low permeability of the rock matrix, fractures and perhaps fault zones must play a crucial role in unsaturated flow. The geologic setting of the major perched water bodies under Yucca Mountain suggests that faults commonly form barriers to lateral flow at the level of the repository horizon, but may also form important pathways for vertical infiltration from the repository horizon down to the water table. Using the numerical code UNSAT2, two factors believed to influence the perched water system at Yucca Mountain, climate and fault-zone permeability, are explored. The two-dimensional model predicts that the volume of water held within the perched water system may greatly increase under wetter climatic conditions, and that perched water bodies may drain to the water table along fault zones. Modeling results also show fault flow to be significantly attenuated in the Paintbrush Tuff non-welded hydrogeologic unit.

    Notes: The purposes of this study are to use both field and modeling approaches to characterize the permeability of a fault and to assess the role of the fault on regional ground water flow. The study subject is the Elkhorn fault, a low-angle reverse fault that brings Precambrian crystalline rocks over the sediments of Colorado's South Park Basin. The fault is hypothesized to act as a low-permeability barrier to flow, restricting interaction between the crystalline aquifer and the basin sediments. To test this hypothesis and to better predict the permeability structure of the fault, we synthesized geologic data to create a geologic model of the fault, conducted aquifer tests to estimate the hydrogeologic properties of the fault zone, and used ground water modeling to test the influence of a range of hydraulic properties for the fault zone on ground water flow in the region.Our study suggests that the fault is a low-permeability feature. Estimated heads are best matched to observations by modeling the fault as a 10-foot-thick interval of low-permeability fault gouge. Steady-state flow models show that much of the flow in the study area is topographically driven near land surface. Flow rates decrease with depth in the aquifers. In the footwall, ground water moves updip in the Michigan-San Isabel syncline to discharge in the South Park Basin. In the hanging wall, ground water moves east to a regional ground water divide. Sensitivity analyses indicate that hydraulic heads are most sensitive to changes in hydraulic conductivity and recharge.

    Notes: This paper documents a lumped parameter model for the assessment of nitrogen leaching under agricultural lands. The model considers nitrogen transformation processes, climate data, and multiple irrigation and fertilizer applications. The model is efficient due to its analytical nature and the limited data requirements. The documentation introduces a PC-Windows interface module that simplifies the preparation of input data and the presentation of results. It also presents an example application of the model that compares simulated to measured nitrate values. The model is suitable for managing fertilizer applications, and for estimating leachate concentrations reaching ground water aquifers.
