    Description: Placodontia, an enigmatic group of durophagous and in part heavily armoured animals, were members of Sauropterygia, the most diverse and successful group of Mesozoic marine reptiles. Microanatomy and histology of long bones of several armoured and non-armoured Placodontia were studied, covering most of their taxonomic breadth, to elucidate the paleoecology, physiology, and lifestyle of its members. Results reveal an unexpected and not phylogenetically or stratigraphically related disparity of microanatomical and histological features for the group. The non-armoured Paraplacodus and the heavily armoured Psephoderma grew with lamellar-zonal bone tissue type, which is typical for modern sauropsids. In the former, the tissue is nearly avascular surrounding a compacted medullary region, whereas in the latter, the lamellar-zonal bone tissue is vascularized framing a large open medullary cavity and a perimedullary region. Armoured Henodus and Placodontia indet. aff. Cyamodus as well as non-armoured Placodus exhibit a reduced medullary cavity and grew with highly vascularized plexiform to radiating fibro-lamellar bone. Several long bones of Placodontia indet. show circumferential fibro-lamellar bone and can be distinguished into two groups on the basis of microanatomical features. In addition, all bones that grew with fibro-lamellar bone show locally primary spongeous-like architecture and had secondarily widened primary osteons throughout the cortex, resulting in a secondarily spongeous tissue. The highly vascularized fibro-lamellar bone of these Placodontia indicates growth rates comparable to that of open marine ichthyosaurs. Differences in microanatomy and bone histology as expressed by a principal component analysis, thus clearly indicate different paleoecologies, including differences in lifestyle and swimming modes and capabilities in Placodontia. This would have reduced competition in the shallow marine environments of the Tethys and might be a key to their success and diversity. A certain developmental plasticity among the studied placodonts is interpreted as response to different environmental conditions as is obvious from inter- and intraspecific histological variation. Most striking is the difference in life history strategy in armoured Psephoderma and non-armoured Paraplacodus when compared to armoured Henodus, Placodontia indet. aff. Cyamodus, non-armoured Placodus, and Placodontia indet. Bone tissue of Psephoderma and Paraplacodus indicates low growth rates and a low basal metabolic rate, as many modern sauropsids have such as the marine iguana, whereas the others grew with extremely fast growth rates, more typical for birds and mammals, indicating an increased basal metabolic rate.

    Notes: Epitaxial thin films of YBa2Cu3O7 have been prepared on SrTiO3 and LaAlO3 substrates by a high-pressure planar dc-sputtering technique. By covering the substrate heater with a frame of polycrystalline YBa2Cu3O7 substantial improvements of the YBa2Cu3O7 film properties were achieved. These are characterized by dc-resistivity values ρ(T) of less than 50 μΩ cm at 100 K and ρ(300 K)/ρ(100 K) values of up to 3.9. Significant deviations from the usual linear ρ(T) behavior were found. Critical temperatures above 90 K, resistive transition widths down to 0.3 K, and critical current densities of about 5 × 106 A/cm2 at 77 K confirm the high quality of the films. As indicated by Rutherford backscattering and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy the films exhibit a microstructure characterized by a reduced density of lattice defects. However, lattice-coherent precipitates with a diameter of about 5–10 nm were observed. As an outstanding feature the films exhibit, besides the initial steep falloff at Tc, a further gradual decrease of the microwave surface resistance at 87 GHz below 50 K by at least one order of magnitude. These results are very promising for millimeter-wave applications of epitaxial YBa2Cu3O7 thin films.

    Notes: This article describes three planar layouts of superconducting multiturn flux transformers integrated with a coplanar resonator for radio frequency (rf) superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometers. The best magnetic field noise values of 22 and 11.5 fT/Hz1/2 in the white noise regime were obtained for the layout with two input coils and the layout with the labyrinth resonator, respectively. Excess low-frequency noise (about 200 fT/Hz1/2 at 10 Hz) was present. Computer simulation showed that the loss in this trilayer system was dominated by the high loss tangent of the dielectric film used for the separation of the upper and lower superconducting films. The rf coupling coefficient krf between the resonator and the flip-chip-coupled SQUID was also estimated. The values krf2(approximate)14×10−3 obtained for the layout with two input coils, and krf2(approximate)45×10−3 for the layout with the labyrinth resonator were considerably higher than the typical value of krf2(approximate)7×10−3 for the single-layer coplanar resonator. These high coupling coefficients have compensated the somewhat degraded unloaded quality factor of the resonator, thus securing the optimum operation of the rf SQUID. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The microwave properties of single crystalline TiO2 (rutile) were investigated. At a frequency of 7.5 GHz the loss tangent tan δ was found to increase from 1.4×10−7 at 4 K to 4×10−6 at 70 K for electric fields parallel to the crystallographic a,b plane. The high permittivity of 105 and the small tanδ in combination with the low microwave losses of high temperature superconductors (HTS) were utilized to construct a miniaturized X-band resonator with a high quality factor Q. An assembly of two YBa2Cu3O7 films of 8 mm in diameter separated by a rutile cylinder of 2 mm height provides a TE011 resonance at 9.7 GHz with Qs ranging from 6×105 at 10 K to 105 at 70 K. Frequency scaling of the losses in rutile and in the HTS films indicates Qs in excess of 106 at 1.8 GHz using YBa2Cu3O7 films of two inches in diameter. Such resonators are considered to be key elements for high-power filters in mobile communications. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The increase in the microwave surface resistance Rs of high Tc superconductors at elevated microwave power levels is reported for both oriented and unoriented Tl-based films as a function of rf magnetic field at 820 MHz and 18 GHz. The application of dc magnetic fields produces qualitatively similar increases in Rs and in the surface reactance Xs. The increase in Rs with dc field is shown to arise from simple decoupling of grains by intergranular magnetic flux. The increase in Rs with microwave power, on the other hand, is a consequence of hysteretic intergranular processes.

    Notes: The application of Hilbert-transform spectroscopy for the measurement of high-harmonic content of the radiation from a frequency multiplier has been demonstrated in the spectral range from 60 to 450 GHz. YBa2Cu3O7−x grain-boundary Josephson junctions made on (110) NdGaO3 bicrystal substrates have been used in these experiments. The internal Josephson radiation of the junctions reveals a Lorentzian shape due to thermal noise broadening. The possibility to obtain a spectral resolution as low as 280 MHz (∼0.01 cm −1) has been shown with a Josephson junction operating at liquid-nitrogen temperature. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: An increase by over three orders of magnitude from 0.58 mΩ to 1.17 Ω was observed at 4.0 K in the 3 GHz microwave surface resistance of ceramic YBa2Cu3O7−δ following exposure to neutrons. The transport resistivity of an unirradiated pellet was linear in temperature down to Tc with a room-temperature value of 2.13 mΩ cm and a resistivity extrapolated to 4.0 K of 0.53 mΩ cm. Following irradiation, the resistivity rose with decreasing temperature from a room-temperature value of 1.5 Ω cm to a maximum at around 45 K with little change evident at Tc . These results, in conjunction with eddy current, susceptibility, iodometric titration, and thermally stimulated luminescence measurements on irradiated and unirradiated samples, collectively suggest that the effect of neutron irradiation has been to decrease intergranular coupling without the development of an insulating phase.

    Notes: We have measured the surface resistance of two c-axis oriented YBa2Cu3O7−x thin-film samples in a copper host cavity at 86.7 GHz between 4.2 and 300 K. High quality films of 0.6 and 0.4 μm thickness have been grown epitaxially on SrTiO3 by pulsed excimer laser ablation. Their millimeter wave absorption drops sharply at a transition temperature of 86 and 88 K to a corresponding surface resistance at 77 K of 18 mΩ and less than 8 mΩ, respectively. These values exceed the best results on polycrystalline samples and come close to the expectation from classical superconductors. Therefore, applications of high Tc superconductors up to THz frequencies can be envisaged now.

    Notes: Examination of breakdown observations in oxides roughly thicker than 10 nm shows that the impact ionization-recombination (IIR) model interprets fast breakdowns on constant voltage tests by the growth of positive charge at the cathode at fields larger than a critical field Fr . Breakdown events of longer duration at fields slightly below the critical field can be observed on constant current tests. Such breakdown cannot be explained by the IIR model. It is suggested that it results from changes produced in the oxide prior to the breakdown by the generation of a large density of electron trap states of the order of 1019 cm−3. The mechanism of such breakdowns has not been identified yet. Resonant tunneling via trap states near the cathode, or degradation of the injection barrier, or transition of the oxide from an insulating to a conducting state may be processes producing breakdown in constant current tests.
