    Description: In this paper we present a device for magnetic survey devoted in particular for archaeological purposes. The device is able to perform accurate measurements of the total magnetic field, it is a flexible device, programmable by the users to be suitable for any specific need. The device relies upon microcontroller, a digital three axes Fluxgate magnetometer, a GPS, and a Real Time Clock (RTC) module. The device is compact and lightweight to be assembled on aerial and marine drones. Recently, Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROV) and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) gained great potential for archaeo-geophysics because of their versatility and low cost, therefore the magnetometer represents a very useful tool for fast and reliable measurements.

    Description: Multidisciplinary geophysical investigations have been carried out in a small area of the Greek archaeological site of Kamarina, in southern Sicily, in order to support some hypotheses, derived from historical and archaeological bases. After an aerial photographic and thermographic survey, a small area near to the Agora has been considered for magnetometric and GPR investigations. Obtained results show a good correlation and allow to highlight some structures oriented in agreement with the uncovered remains. The use of integrated geophysical techniques allowed a more robust interpretation of the detected anomalies in order to better address the choices for new excavations.

    Description: The research carried out at the Istituto Nazionale di Ricerca Metrologica (formerly Istituto di Metrologia «G. Colonnetti») aiming to develop a transportable ballistic absolute gravimeter ended with a new version of the instrument, called the IMGC-02. It uses laser interferometry to measure the symmetrical free rising and falling motion of a test mass in the gravity field. Providing the same accuracy achieved with previous versions, the instrumental improvements mainly concern size, weight, data processing algorithms and operational simplicity. An uncertainty of 9 μGal (1 μGal=1×10–8 m·s−2) can be achieved within a single observation session, lasting about 12 h, while the time series of several observation sessions show a reproducibility of 4 μGal. At this level, gravity measurements provide useful information in Geophysics and Volcanology. A wide set of dynamic phenomena, i.e. seismicity and volcanic activity, can produce temporal gravity changes, often quite small, with an amplitude ranging from a few to hundreds of microgals. Therefore the IMGC absolute gravimeter has been employed since 1986 in surveying the Italian active volcanoes. A brief history of the gravimeter and the description of the new apparatus, together with the main results of ongoing applications in Geophysics and Volcanology are presented.

    Notes: Abstract Many geophysical fields show highly intermittent fractal structures spanning wide ranges of scale. However, few are isotropic: “texture”, stratification, as well as variable (scale dependent) orientation of structures is far more common. To deal with such fractals, we must generalise the idea of scale invariance beyond the familiar self-similar (or even self-affine) notions. Taking the atmosphere as our primary example (however, we also model galaxies), we outline the necessary formalism (generalised scale invariance), and show how it can be used to deal with the strongly intermittent structures which result from multiplicative (cascade type) processes concentrating matter or energy into smaller and smaller scales. We illustrate these ideas with rain data from blotting paper and radar, showing first how to directly estimate the elliptical dimension characterising the stratification, and second, how to determine universal scale-independent (invariant) codimension functions that characterise the distribution of the intense rain regions.

    Description: The stress field that existed before a large earthquake can be calculated based on the known source parameters of the event. This stress field can be used to define a region that shows greater seismic moment rate changes prior to the event than arbitrarily shaped regions, allowing us to link two previously unrelated subjects: Coulomb stress interactions and accelerating seismicity before large earthquakes. As an example, we have examined all M〉=6.5 earthquakes in California since 1950. While we illustrate the model using seismicity in California, the technique is general and can be applied to any tectonically active region. We show that where sufficient knowledge of the regional tectonics exists, this method can be used to augment current techniques for seismic hazard estimation.
