Notes: Summary The effects of the calcium entry blocker nifedipine on blood pressure (BP) and the pressor and aldosterone responses to graded infusions of angiotensin II were studied in normal subjects using 3 protocols. Study 1 was a randomised double-blind placebo-controlled trial of nifedipine (20 mg p.o.) on supine and erect BP in 9 subjects. There was a highly significant fall in BP: (8±4 mmHg; mean±SDM;p〈0.001) with maximum changes occurring 30 min after drug administration. Significant reciprocal changes in pulse rate were observed. These changes were not altered by prior administration of the prostaglandin synthetase inhibitor flurbiprofen (100 mg). In Study 2, 6 subjects were given nifedipine (20 mg) or no treatment mid-way between 2 identical graded infusions of angiotensin II (5, 10 and 20 ng/kg/min) separated by an interval of 1 h on each of 2 study days, and blood pressure and aldosterone responses were measured. There was a significant attenuation of both pressor (p〈0.05) and aldosterone (p〈0.05) responses. The changes in aldosterone responses were not due to changes in plasma renin, potassium or adrenocorticotrophin. In study 3 the pressor and aldosterone responses to angiotensin II (2, 5, 10 and 20 ng/kg/min) were studied after 3 days treatment with nifedipine (20 mg thrice daily) or placebo. Pressor dose response curves to both angiotensin II and noradrenaline were shifted in parallel to the right, but not significantly, and aldosterone responses to angiotensin II were unchanged by nifedipine. These results show that nifedipine may decrease BP in normal subjects by decreasing pressor and aldosterone responses to angiotensin II and that the aldosterone response to angiotensin II in man is possibly calcium-dependent.

Notes: Abstract 3Z,6Z,9Z-Nonadecatriene (3Z,6Z,9Z-19:H; other abbreviations follow the same pattern) has been identified as a female sex pheromone component of the geometrid mothEpirrhoe sperryi (H.). 3Z,6Z,9Z-18:H and 6Z,9Z-19:H were also identified in pheromone gland extracts but had no apparent biological activity. 3Z,6Z,9Z-21:H was tentatively identified as a female sex pheromone component of a second geometrid species,Lobophora nivigerata (Wlk.). Attraction of male moths to this compound was strongly synergized by the addition of small amounts of 6Z,9Z-21:H to lures.

Notes: Abstract Three sex pheromone components of the carob moth were isolated and identified from the extract of female pheromone glands, using a variety of techniques including coupled gas chromatographic-electroantennographic recordings, coupled gas chromatographic-mass spectrometric analysis, microozonolysis, electroantennographic assays of monounsaturated standards, wind-tunnel bioassays, and field trials. The major component was identified as (Z,E)-9,11,13-tetradecatrienal, a novel lepidopterous pheromone component structure. Two minor components, either one of which improves the upwind flight response of males when blended with the major component, were identified as (Z,E)-9,11-tetradecadienal, and (Z)-9-tetra-decenal.

Notes: Abstract Unmated female or male cabbage looper moths,Trichoplusia ni (Hübner), were attracted more often in a flight tunnel to a cage with moths of the opposite sex and a bouquet of cotton foliage. Increased sexual attractiveness of females with plants may be a result of stimulation of pheromone release in response to plant odor, since more males were attracted when odor of cotton foliage was passed over females than when odor of females was passed over cotton foliage before venting into the flight tunnel. Increased sexual attractiveness of males with plants is due in part to host odor enhancement of female attraction to male pheromone, since more females were attracted to synthetic male pheromone (a blend of enantiomers of linalool and isomers of cresol) and a cotton leaf extract than were attracted to male pheromone alone. A short synthesis procedure was developed for (S)-(+)-linalool, the major component of the male sex pheromone, isolated from hair pencils, used in these tests.

Notes: Abstract Enantiomerically enriched forms of (Z)-6-cis-9,10-epoxymonoenes and (Z)-9-cis-6,7-epoxymonoenes of chain lengths C17−20 were synthesized by Sharpless asymmetric epoxidation of allylic alcohol intermediates, followed by tosylation or halogenation and chain extension. The resulting monounsaturated epoxides were field tested as sex attractants for lepidopteran species.Euchlaena madusaria Walker males were attracted to blends of the enantiomers of (Z)-6- cis- 9,10-epoxynonadecene 6Z-cis-9,10-epoxy-19:H; IUPAC name [2α,3α(Z)]-2-pentyl-3-(2-dodecenyI)oxirane in combination with 6Z,9Z-19: H. The response was antagonized by 9Z-cis-6,7-epoxy-19: H. 6Z,9Z-19: H was tentatively identified in pheromone gland extracts.Xanthotype sospeta Drury male moths were attracted to lures containing 6Z-9S,10R-epoxy-19: H; the response was antagonized by the opposite enantiomer.Pal-this angulalis Hübner males were attracted to 9Z-6S,7R-epoxy-19:H; the opposite enantiomer was antagonistic. 6Z,9Z-19:H and 9Z-cis-6,7-epoxy-19:H and 9Z-cis-6,7-epoxy-19:H were tentatively identified in pheromone gland extracts fromAnacamptodes humaria Guenée females. In field trails, 9Z-6R,7S-epoxy-19:H proved to be the attractive enantiomer, and the response was potentiated by 6Z,9Z-19:H. Mechanisms by which unique chemical communication channels are maintained by each species are discussed.

Notes: Abstract Analysis of frass extracts and aerations from adult beetles confirmed earlier studies identifying 1-heptanol as a principal pheromone constituent produced by female Dendroctonus jeffreyi Hopkins. The aerations also indicated that males produced 33% (+) and 67% (−)-frontalin, previously unreported for this species, and 〉99% (+)-exo-brevicomin. Both males and females were responsive to these compounds in electrophysiological studies. Laboratory bioassays and field trapping experiments indicated that males and females were attracted to a mixture of 1-heptanol plus the principal host resin component heptane, but females were less attracted than males. Inclusion of racemic exo-brevicomin at 0.1% concentration in the traps increased the response of females. Inclusion of racemic frontalin above a 1% concentration in the normally attractive lures blocked arrival of beetles to the traps. While the female-produced pheromone components and host synergists are very different between the sibling species D. jeffreyi and Dendroctonus ponderosae Hopkins, the principal male-produced compounds are the same, and the response of the female beetles to those compounds appears to be similar.
