Abstract A survey is given on the various methods for dispersal of freshwater algae. Dispersal factors are either water or air, or organisms — from beetles, dragonflies and mammals to birds, the latter being the most important group. The question of dispersal distances is discussed, in relation to dispersal mechanisms and to the resistance of the algae to transport conditions. Man's recent importance in algal dispersal is emphasized.
