Abstract A frequent question in choical practice is whether the manipulation of the viewing process, e.g. by intensive training or a mechanical aid can lead to improved search-and-recognition behaviour. Our study of eye movement patterns yielded the following results. Fixed scanpaths have not been found for four observers. The search process seemed quite efficient and consistent with information about the chest radiographs under investigation given to the observers. Six diagnostic instructions. differing in successive experiments, did not influence the fixation patterns significantly The measurement of eye movement seems perfectly suited to monitor the completeness of the visual search in medical image interpretation.
