    Description: The scaling properties of a time series of Doppler images obtained in good visibility conditions are studied. A 28 cm vacuum telescope and a vacuum spectroheliograph in video spectra-spectroheliograph mode, are used. Sixty line-of-sight Doppler images of an area of the quiet sun are investigated. They were taken at 60 sec intervals over a one hour span and have a 2 arcsec resolution. After the removal of the five-minute oscillations, the time-spatial spectrum is calculated. To study the turbulence of photospheric flows, two scaling parameters in the spectra, are estimated: the exponent of the spatial part of the power spectrum, and the exponent governing the scaling of time correlations. The implied diffusive behavior is discussed. This includes the estimation of a diffusion coefficient and the type of diffusion involved.

    Description: A series of balloon-borne experiments has been initiated at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in cooperation with the Space Sciences Laboratory of the NASA G. C. Marshall Space Flight Center to determine the feasibility of using large (greater than 20 cc) lithium-drifted, germanium diodes to investigate the spectrum of atmospheric gamma rays (60 keV 〈 E 〈 1.5 MeV) at altitudes corresponding to a few grams per cm (sup 2) residual atmosphere. The results of these measurements will also provide a basis for designing an appropriate shield for a multi-diode, highly directional gamma-ray spectrometer for use in astrophysical measurements. Two flights were accomplished during 1967 using the same two diodes and basic instrument package. Both flights were launched at the NCAR Scientific Balloon Flight Base, Palestine, Texas, and attained a float altitude of 117, 000 ft. The measured atmospheric gamma-ray spectrum shows at least one distinct line at 511 keV (annihilation radiation) superimposed on a continuous distribution of gamma rays attributable to both energy-degraded gamma rays and brems-strahlung photons. A second diode, encased in a passive shield of plastic and lead, shows the expected lines resulting from both neutron inelastic scattering and capture in the germanium. Data acquisition was accomplished on an event-by-event basis through the use of 512-channel, on-board ADC and word-generator circuits and a ground-based, on-line telemetry decoder. The decoder makes it possible to store the data in the memory of a modified pulse-height analyzer simultaneously with storage on magnetic tape. This provides a real-time visual observation of the data as it is accumulated and greatly facilitates preflight calibrations.

    Description: Various representations of the aerodynamic contribution to the aircraft's equation of motion are shown to be compatible within the common assumption of their Frechet differentiability. Three forms of invalidating Frechet differentiability are identified, and the mathematical model is amended to accommodate their occurrence. Some of the ways in which chaotic behavior may emerge are discussed, first at the level of the aerodynamic contribution to the equations of motion, and then at the level of the equations of motion themselves.

    Description: A technique has been developed to automatically correct for drifts in the radiometric sensitivity of the detector channels in a direct-reading emission spectrometer. The method utilizes a 1000 W tungsten-halogen reference lamp to illuminate the detectors through the same optical path as that traversed during the analysis of the sample. Detector channel responses to the light are compared to those for the same light intensity at the time of analytical calibration. This corrects for the drift. It is noted that with the exception of positioning the lamp, the procedure is fully automatic.

    Description: The evidence presented suggests that the 25-d period of the fluctuation is caused, inadvertently, by the irregular nature of the observing pattern. The effects of irregular sampling as against regular sampling of the facular signal are compared in order to show that the characteristics of Dicke's (1972) fluctuations can be caused by the observing pattern provided that faculae are an important source of the excess solar oblateness.

    Description: The parameter identification scheme being used is a differential correction least squares procedure (Gauss-Newton method). The position, orientation, and derivatives of these quantities with respect to the parameters of interest (i.e., sensitivity coefficients) are determined by digital integration of the equations of motion and the parametric differential equations. The application of this technique to three vastly different sets of data is used to illustrate the versatility of the method and to indicate some of the problems that still remain.

    Description: A direct-current arc in argon at atmospheric pressure was used to determine effective work functions of refractory metals, including tantalum, tungsten, molybdenum, and niobium. The procedure is experimentally advantageous, because surface cleanliness of the specimen is not critical, high vacuum is not required, and the anode-cathode spacing is not critical. The experimental procedure involves striking an arc to a metal wire cathode to form a melted ball having an emitting area defined by its diameter. The literature melting point of the metal is taken as the emitting temperature. By using these parameters and the known arc current, effective work functions were calculated from the Richardson-Dushman equation. The calculated work functions agree with recommended handbook values to within about 0.1 V and have typical repeatabilities of 0.02 V.
