    Notes: Abstract A methodology is developed for the solution of the problem of maintaining profile accuracy while machining slender parts on a lathe. On-line optimisation of the machining parameters based on real-time monitoring of cutting forces ensures that profile error does not exceed a pre-set limit. Experimental validation is carried out for a range of variations of speed, feed and depth of cut.
