Notes:
Summary The widely used resolution criterion which is based on the individual base-line widths of two peaks is invalid in practical situations. In this paper, a simple resolution function is presented. All the necessary data for calculating the resolution are directly measurable from the experimental chromatogram. It is shown that this function can be used to characterize the resolution in non-ideal situations where the areas of the two peaks that overlap are different and/or the peaks are non-symmetrical.
