  • SPACECRAFT INSTRUMENTATION  (2)
  • 1
    Publication Date: 2011-08-24
Description: The Lidar In-Space Technology Experiment (LITE) is being developed by NASA Langley Research Center for a series of flights on the Space Shuttle. Using a three-wavelength Nd:YAG laser and a 1-meter-diameter telescope, the system will be used to study clouds, aerosols in the troposphere and stratosphere, density and temperature perturbations of the stratosphere, and characteristics of the planetary boundary layer. Data collected from the system will be used in studies of atmospheric dynamics, meteorology, climate, the radiation budget, biogeochemical processes, and the hydrologic cycle. Additionally, the data will be used to develop retrieval techniques optimized for a spaceborne configuration and to develop requirements for future operational spaceborne lidar systems.

Description: The characteristics of a large lidar system, the Lidar In-Space Technology Experiment (LITE), which is being developed for launch in 1994 into an earth orbit, are described together with the type of investigations to be performed by LITE. LITE will measure atmospheric parameters such as cloud heights, profiles of aerosols and temperature, and surface characteristics. The experiment is modular in design and can be used as a testbed for the evolution of future lidar designs and technologies. Diagrams of the LITE hardware pallet configuration for Shuttle flights, the LITE telescope receiver configuration, and the optics bench layout are presented.
